A rare treasure indeed. I heard them both at Nottingham in Winterreise in 1963, and Pears with Murray Perahia and Julian Bream at Wigmore Hall in 1976, and Pears at the Festival in the Serenade in January 1977, the first time he had sung in public after Britten's death. He got a standing ovation.
Thank you for posting this remarkable video! What a treasure to see two wonderful musicians in their prime. Their love story endures and Britten, one of the best composers of the 20th century, enjoyed accompanying is partner. I adore Purcell so this was a rare treat that I'd never heard before. Thank you so much!
Each note is a jewel - and Pears' actual voice is here at the ideal balance between freshness and maturity with no need for the "adjustment" that became necessary in the sixties and with greater depth than the slightly callow sound of his younger self.
I’ve always thought that “Man is for the woman made” sounds so much like a Gilbert and Sullivan aria! It’s also a pretty ironic choice, considering their relationship.
I'll never know why some musicians friend of mine didn't like Peter Pears voice!!! I'd rather trust my taste, so I love Peter Pears voice and genial artistry !!!
It's wonderful to be privy to these great performances where the music is brought vividly - and always intelligently - to life. You neither see nor hear Pears breathe (something he had in common with Frank Sinatra ... !)
paulprocopolis I believe Sinatra had early training in opera. I'm no expert, but will assume breathing method is something taught early in opera lessons. Always was in movies where someone is shown with their vocals teacher. Lol
Amazing....I’ve just listened to amateur sopranos singing this on TH-cam....and wow they SOUND like amateurs compared to this wonderful pairing of talents..

I love Purcell and I have always loved Peter Pears's voice.
Beautiful, lyrical, even in tone and musical...long beautiful phrases! You can never hear him breathe....
Thank you so much for posting videos of Britten and Pears performing together. It is such a treasure to have access to two phenomenal artists.
A rare treat indeed to watch and hear these two. Well done!
So beautiful 🥺🥺

Indeed! This is one of the best recordings of Pears I've heard.
Una coppia meravigliosa! Un amore unico
He brings out a wonderful earthy, direct quality on the second song. What a resonant voice.

perfection
Brilliant pairing - a masterful pianist and a fascinating tenor!
The wonderful Peter Pears - GORGEOUS! Thanks for Posting!

I heard Peter Pears as the evangelist in Bach's St Matthew Passion, twice, in Liverpool in the early sixties.
What a wonderful performance, and what a tremendous artistry! (And, yes, what an amazing breath control!)
What artistry! Great artists, both!! Thank you so much!! Arigatou!
Just found this: marvelous! Thank you.
MARVELOUS!!!!
Talent of the highest order.
They set the standard. Gorgeous.

I wish I could drink peter pears' voice
Wonderful! First class performance!
What a beautiful tenor voice!

Oui;je le savais mais qu'importe!
Amants.

"Man is For The Woman made", err not quite Pears' and Britten's true sentiment methinks. It would seem that they were a model couple.
984francis haha I was just thinking the same, they probably chose the song on purpose as a joke, it is from "The mock marriage" so... ;)
Ah! Yes, I didn't get that, thanks!
+984francis See the video "The Hidden Heart, The life of Pears and Britten." on YT, If you haven't already. Enjoy
I'm pretty sure it's from the Indian Queen. But I would indeed love it if they had chosen it on purpose :-)
@@jackhousman6637 Thank you for this! Was just seeing photos of their "Red House" for the first time. Britten was fascinating and his life too brief.
Bliss!
Красивый голос.
Comical irony
My innate dislike of classical warbling stops at the voice of Mr Pears, an extraordinary talent.
dudley moore!
The famous Gay Anthem! :)
