I lived in Hung Hum , Kowloon during the 60’s . Went from Kowloon City area over the Lion Rock Mount twice on to ShaTin and ride the train back to Tsim Sha Tsai . During those days of plenty of Chinese ( mainland ) refugees rushing into HK , my mother brought breads over certain areas to feed a few of them . Later found two sons of our friend used live near our Ming Garden in GuangZhou were among those refugees , my mom didn’t find them instead being informed by the HK police because these two brothers got our name and address and so we for sure accepted them . And later we found they swam into HK instead walk across the hilly areas of the border . It was later that too many of the refugees came on and so the HK government had to send them back after given them a meal . And they came again . So sad for them risking their lives crossing the border because they would starve to death if they stay put at where they came from . Those refugees were talking about in the millions . Many of them mentioned that they were so glad to see the British flag ( Union Jack ) when they came close to the border . Every HK local news papers and Radios got plenty of such news and later the United Nations Refugees system stepped in . 🙏. Those were part of the 60’s and many of the younger generations probably know nothing about it anymore . 🙏🕊️

Wow, what a heavy storage of memories there was! Life is ephemeral, so is the evolving appearance of a place like Shatin. I fancy what it would be like if Hong Kong had only 3 million inhabitants now. Many might think it can hardly be able to get so materially developed as it is today. But, in terms of quality of life, one might think differently perhaps. Indubitably, there would be good and bad things mixed together making it hard for anyone to mete out a fair judgement. However, a stark impression this collection of images gives me is that the nature of its growth originates as a respite for people to survive after fleeing from war and political tyranny. And this makes me difficult not to stare at the irony of history that political aggressiveness could smash a safe haven so blatantly at one stroke recently. No sober democratic leader would dare do it today, unless he is out of his mind. And out of his mind he definitely is.

I tried not to be political and to state the fact only. The fact is that the city of Shatin look totally unrecognizable today.
Population-wise, Shatin has grown from a rural township of about 15,000 people in the early 60s to roughly 700,000 today.
Some would call it a success story.

@@RK-hg7ye Thanks for your feedback. You have really done a great job in compiling such a comprehensive retrospection of Shatin's early years. Few can deny that the building of satellite towns in the 70s was one of many credits of the British colonial legacy to Hong Kong. My whining is only an outcry for the imminent threat of a hiatus of its development because of a sudden political about-turn that severely affects the city at present. I personally am not interested in politics.

    Thank R K.
We were poor. But we were happy. Many bare have enough food to live. They still felt good because across the bother China was even poorer. For now, across the border, China is much more richer than Hong Kong. Maybe, that is the reason that HK people had put up a fight against the mainland China in 2019.
