"Portuguese five-piece Sinistro might be a new name even for the Roadburn lifers among you, and a cursory glance at their website and social media pages won’t reveal too much, either. Captured in mostly black and white environments, there is a group of faceless figures lurking in the shadows, vague shots of landscapes that could be either urban or rural. Not even their merch gives too much away, the triangular shapes perhaps hinting at something that you won’t ever be sure of what it is.
You won’t find live photos or videos because they have never played live before. The name of the band, the Portuguese word for “sinister”, suggests that all of this elusiveness is intentional, which is confirmed when, ultimately, even Sinistro‘s music won’t hold any definitive answers. Just more questions - evocative, frightening and astoundingly beautiful questions.
The entire anti-image of Sinistro is very captivating in itself, as are the two releases they’ve put out so far, Sinistro and Cidade - this the first one where they collaborated with Patrícia Andrade, who is now their lead singer and the only band member not identified by a single letter. Everything prior will only seem like a build-up when their forthcoming album, Semente, is unveiled.
We have been lucky enough to listen to it already, and we can tell you that it is one of the most exciting records we here at Roadburn have heard in a long, long time. The way its enveloping darkness unfolds like a creeping mist, the way Patrícia‘s hauntingly theatrical vocals enwrap themselves around the musical shadows.
There is atmosphere, but also drive, there are textures, but also beats. Semente is a flowing, ethereal yet very concrete, unclassifiable journey that every Roadburner worth his / her salt will want to get lost in. It will be released in April through Season of Mist, and we like it so much that their live performance at Roadburn 2016, one of their first ever (they have been carefully preparing for live shows since the beginning, not wanting to rush what they intend to be a faithful transcription of the many feelings contained in the records), will in fact be the album release show, and its visual component, making the most of the intimate Green Room, will both surprise and amaze you."
