One of the major points of Sonic's philosophy is that people should have the freedom to choose the right thing. He wants Metal to be a good guy so he offered a truce, but at the end of the day it's his freedom and he chose to keep being a bitch. If Metal starts shit, Sonic is gonna beat him up again and give him the same opportunity (If Metal doesn't end up totally destroyed). He does this with Eggman too btw. It's not actually portrayed as a GOOD thing he's doing, it's just how he rolls, and I kinda respect it. This mentality does get criticized later in the series if you're into that.

I feel like the complain of "Sonic never tried to change people's way of living in the past" is blown out of proportion, because he has told people how to live their lives in the past like every interaction he has with Elise in 06 is exactly like that.
No he gave advice to ppl who needed it and never gave it out to someone who was an enemy to him like he does in the comics it’s not the same. Usually when Sonic would drop lines like “if you have time to worry then run” (which he tells to Elise) he’s not only telling that to the character(s) in game but to the audience that’s playing the game as well. @@LocalTrapTVWhy does there need to be a lesson? Why can't that just be something Sonic does? Most of Sonic's friends have tried to kill him at least once so I don't really see the guy seeing much of a divide when it comes to friend and foe. As for the narrative purpose, you'll just have to be patient for that, Sonic's attitude towards Metal Sonic is building on something you won't see for a good long while.
He believes this is the most logical path ahead because not only was Eggman not himself anymore since he would be Mr. Tinker but no in the Eggman Empire knew where he even was in the first place, even Neo Metal Sonic admitted that his whereabouts were unknown the entire time. Without the Doctor to fix his impressive creation, not to mention that Metal Sonic solely follows the Eggman Empire seriously, he would have no other reason to play this song and dance without these other factors, not to mention that his weapon system was deactivated which he only wanted Eggman to repair for him. Of course, Sonic didn't know about Starline, and even more, doesn't yet know about Eggman's return. Another thing is that he isn't telling him to be the good guy here either, he enjoys the thrill of adventure and fighting Metal Sonic is a close enough fight for him since everyone else is mostly his friend so he can dish out as much on Metal Sonic as he wants to. As you already shown, he even said it word by word to Metal at the end of Sonic Heroes, acknowledging he is a tough opponent that he enjoys fighting against. Does this make him selfish, of course, he isn't perfect by all means. Sonic may be a hero throughout the world be he himself believes in living freely by the wind, for himself and others as well, and wanting to feel the thrill of it as well which Metal brings in even in this scenario.@@LocalTrapTV
I understand what he’s trying to do but I don’t think Sonic would take that approach based on what he was done prior.
