  • While the town at the center of many Stephen King's stories may look like "Anytown, USA" but there are notes of hope sprinkled throughout as well, so we’ll just have to wait and see what we’re in for. Because this isn’t any ordinary town: this is Castle Rock. This is Stephen King territory. And this is The Dead Zone.

Just wanted to say... HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY, THE DEAD ZONE!
Yup, 2023 marks 40 years since this gem hit movie theaters.
Always appreciated Herbert Lom's honesty regarding WWII and what he would've done had he been gifted the same powers as Walken's character!

I wish I saw it in the theater. What a great film. It kind of plays like a movie of the week because it's so short, but it's a magnificent performance by Walken.

I went to see this when it opened with a girlfriend. We came out stunned. Walken is just so good. So tonight I found my dusty old DVD and threw it in. When it was over I was again sitting here, mouth agape. It was like watching it for the first time again.
And you did a great job reviewing this incredible piece of film.

Another note is it’s got such a cronenberg vibe without all the overt squishy parts but it’s very cold and Canadian and that suicide… only cronenberg could film that. I can’t say gazebo normally after this film.

I've seen it and I've read the book at least twice, maybe three times. Fun fact: The sheriff in this one and the Sheriff in Cujo are the same character, but played by different actors. The character's name is George Bannerman. Cujo kills him and a man named Alan Pangborn replaces him as sheriff of Castle Rock. He's the sheriff in Needful Things and The Dark Half movies, even though he's ALSO played by different actors.
I think it would have been cool if Tom Skerritt and Ed Harris had played the two characters in all four movies respectively.

  • @lowlygrinder2977
    @lowlygrinder2977 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The problem with going back to kill Hitler is it could and probably would cause a paradox, Hitler had such an affect on the world it would have a drastic effect on your grandparents or parents meeting, or even having kids, you would not be born and so would not be able to go back in time, and so Hitler would not be killed, and you would be born and go back. Time would constantly be repeating this part over and over, never ending until something outside it's influence set it right. That's damn scary, we might well be in a paradox right now and none of us would know.

Reading the book now and the comparison with 2016 is startling. Right down to the whole seeing Stillson as a harmless clown who was a bit of entertainment but nothing to seriously concern oneself about. King was prescient in seeing how the establishment could easily underestimate a psychopath and the growing dread that this guy was going to cause real chaos and destruction.

Best King novel and film. It’s been years since I became a fan. Clairvoyants don’t exist apart from demonic influence, so that part is a little disturbing. The Martin Sheen character is unsettling in the book and in the movie. King tries to show Sheen as a budding American Hitler, but he fails due to insufficient knowledge about Hitler and his life, which was evil, but Hitler was a different type of character altogether.

Love this movie. It's so striking that a writer, director and star who were each sort of considered "that creepy guy" in their respective fields at the time, would produce a movie with so much humanity.
Glad you mentioned the collar thing - I think it's Cronenberg's way of showing how many people view Johnny as vampire-like and frightening, someone who can see their worst secrets.
I think one of the best exchanges comes at the end, after Stilson has been revealed as an evil coward, and he shouts (paraphrasing here) "Get the kid with the camera!" and his henchman gives him a stone-cold look and says "I didn't see nobody" - even he has finally had enough.

Oh man, I forgot all about the deadzone show! Never even heard of the movie. Didn't know it was a Stephen king property either! Always learning of another book by him
Daaamn... Didn't even get him in the end! Ain't that a bitch? The good guy lost

You should watch the film in its entirety, the ending was bittersweet, but appropriate and somewhat satisfying.

One of the best King films & stories. Walken delivers some of his career best work here & Cronenberg was so well-suited and Kamen’s score is hauntingly beautiful and creepy

I read the book in 1980. I saw the movie in 1983. I can honestly say that this was one of the best adaptations of any novel.

Stanley Donnen not only directed Singin in the Rain but Charade too. Charade is the best Hitchcock movie but is not a Hitchcock movie.

Love this film, and the book it’s based on. During 45’s tenure, comparisons were made between the Martin Sheen character and Mary’s uncle (he who shall not be named). Greg’s obviously a world away from Jed Bartlet (the best President America never had).

My favorite movie probably because I have had a few psychic experiences myself. The psychic experiences in the movie seem so realistic that viewers don't dismiss them because the plot is so intricate that you just accept it. I thought many times "where is this movie going?"...quite unusual, to say the the least. Sometimes I wonder WHY I can instantly like someone or not like them. Is THIS a psychic experience??? I have seen this movie so many times and never tire watching it.

Trump will go down as the greatest president in the modern era. Biden is a nightmare. His border disaster will be the end of the U.S. as we know it.

The real villain was the ex girlfriend, she cheated on her husband with his son in the house and screwed up John's assassination attempt of the corrupt politician.
