This original Surface Pro has roughly the same performance and specs as the base model Surface Go, except it's heavier, thicker, and has only half the battery life. Crazy how much tech improves.

Flip the kickstand out, lay it on its side and it works for landscape move. Yea it's designed for portrait mode but u can use it for landscape as well.

Im thinking about getting this or the Lenovo Helix for my school year next year for notes as I used to use an old Windows XP tablet at my previous school with onenote and it was a great experience, any suggestions?
The in built camera as pointed out is average however given its Windows 8 Pro you can choose to plug in a High Defintion Webcam and it will work perfectly.
It has an Ivy bridge processor, so if a game you are running can run on Intel HD4000 graphics then it can. Though you would ned to buy the 128GB model so you aren't running out of space or install it on the SD card slot.
The Surface Pro can run all applications compatible with Windows 7 as well as the Tablet style apps as well, whereas the RT could only run a limited version of Office and tablet style apps.

Having used the Pro for two weeks, I can say this is an amazing product. All the functionality of a pc in a tablet form factor plus an excellent digitizer pen. I use my iPad and Galaxy Note 10.1 for media consumption but I use the Pro for productivity. MS hit it outta the park!
Well it really depends on your budget. You should also consider that this is not only a "tablet" since as the reviewer said its more of a laptop than anything else so you have to think if you are looking for a real tablet experience with a different operating system or for a tablet which is more similar to your PC. hope this helped.
I just bought my Surface Pro 128 yesterday knowing full well that the camera was horrible. The thing is though, 1: It was between the Surface or the Lenovo Thinkpad Helix which doesn't have a camera. Though the Helix is much better, it all came down to price. If you can afford it, get the Lenovo Helix when it's available, you won't be disappointed. 2: I've learned through my iPad 3 and Blackberry Playbook that taking pictures with a tablet isn't very fun so I just use my phone.
Really tempted to get this device. About the camera: First of all tablet cameras are hyped, I would never use this kind of device to do any photography. But when they actually include the backside camera I do not understand why they did not ask Nokia for help, whom seem to be doing a good job with the Windows Phone cameras?
@galaxynotefan because even a small change like that can improve battery life. If it had something higher than the surface would get about 3 hours and 45 minutes of battery which you need at least 4 in todays market.
As a Game Design student I now can't think of any single tool that is more helpful to me than my Surface Pro. I can run PS, AI, Maya , Max, Zbrush, SKB Pro, and a quick run through Skyrim on lunch. The new Wacom Drivers, make it like a mini-portable Cintiq. My only problems with this device is that it gets WAY TOO HOT! and it only gets 3 hours a real time battery use. It is a devise yo will always want to use so you end up looking for plugs again.
I'm going buy either this or a surface 2 off of ebay, what would be better for speed and using office? Starting college next month and just need what would be best for using office and doing research!
they are thinner than a macbook air, I can see why they aren't as powerful as a full sized laptop, but they are much more portable. It has full laptop functionality and is a tablet as well - plus I can see the graphics tablet features being extremely useful to many students.
man that keyboard is pretty revolutionary. I'm pretty sure the next iPad is going to have something like it. Nice job Microsoft, especially since they are predominantly a software company.
I have the 128GB version and LOVE IT! If the battery life is to short for you, then buy a tablet. If the it cost too much for you, then buy a tablet or get a better paying job. I own all three ecosystems (Apple, Android, and now MS), and this meets my needs.
The Surface RT is perfectly capable and cheaper, if you just need to do work with the Office suite programs. But if you need to do more demanding work, like photo editing with PhotoShop or joining a Windows Domain network, the Surface Pro is the only choice. IMHO.
i'm waiting for the 4th gen intel CPUs into this thing with twice the graphics power and significantly improved energy efficiency. now that is gonna be an excellent buy - hopefully for a smaller price. 700 bucks would sound pretty excellent.
so let me address that - 1) any full OS is better than a mobile phone OS. 2) apple did not make memory cards, neither does the iPad have any memory card slot. 3) apple did not make USB, microsoft and 6 other companies did. 4) Apple did not make HDMI - are you seeing a pattern here? I am. 5) apps for work? Perhaps you don't have a real job beyond serving people drinks, but generally at work you use full software packages, not apps, to do work.
Because some people don't need a camera on their tablet and don't want millions of gimmicky apps. This is tablet actually has some form of practicality which is a first for tablets.
the thing is though that the microsoft surface is as powerful as a full sized laptop, with an intel hd 4000 gpu and core i5 it can compete with decent laptops, the macbook pro is just an above average laptop that is more powerful than most laptops anyways
FB video chat is powered by Skype. So... use the Skype App. (Or just use it how you always do in Internet Explorer or Chrome.) It's a PC, like any other.
To be fair if your buying this your not looking for a good camera experience. Is still get it if it didn't have the rear camera cause you have to look at this more like an ultra book
I'm not an iSheep at all, but iPad is a tablet, this is supposedly a laptop. however, if you buy the 64GB model, you get around 23 gigs! That's outragous! I'd rather have an iPad 4.
hey, im glad someone isnt slating windows for a change. I just want the opinion of someone who doesn't hate windows rt, on what to get for uni. I have just started uni and i want to treat myself to something light and portable, with 6 + hours battery and microsoft word so i can take notes on class. Im pretty sold on microsoft seeing as i love my windows phone but because as everyone seems to hate windows, especially windows rt, im a bit hesitant to get one. Would you recomend the surface 2 for note taking in class or should I spend a bit more and get the pro 2? Thanks for your time
If as a student you can fit it into your budget I would recommend getting a Surface Pro 2 especially because its a full Windows tablet with good battery life and a high precision pen.bu...t you also may have to make the additional investment in MS Office...so you are looking at 900-1100 investment...but it will be the only device you would need. I have had Ipads, Androids, and WinRT which I loved because of the battery life and comes with full office..and got it on sale for $199. However I found myself using the WinRT for email and office, but using my other tablet for higher power programs...so I sold both and got a Surface Pro 1 when they dropped the price after SP2 came out. Only difference I see between the two is battery life but if I use it just for productivity and light consumption it works great for me since I still have my Ipad mini for consumption. Hope that helps!!
The Surface RT has office pre installed on it, but it can only run pre installed windows apps. The surface pro 1, 2 and 3 can run full windows applications, but you would need to buy office.

I think this is also geared towards medical students because thy rely on touch based windows. The computers they use normally cost 2000 and up. I have seen my elder brothers and I would prefer the surface than what they use. This is a new market

It's very obvious you don't know the difference between the Surface RT and Surface Pro. Surface RT is a stripped-down OS (smaller size), while Pro is a full-fledged OS (Windows 8 Pro). A 64GB Pro will only have ~30GB of free space to install stuff. Windows 8 won't even fit into the 16GB hardware.
The Surface with windows 8 looks so much nicer than the boring old ipad, not to mention it blows the ipad away when it cpmes to power and functionalitiy.
what stops me from shelling that extra 100$ on project razer edge? I get iys really awsome to have a tablet pc specially if I want to visual basic on the go but it barely deserves a 900$ price point compared to a gaming contra part alternative also not much gpu horse power to make a real use of that pen on designing and autocad :(
That's the reason why I always wait until the price drops where I live the 64GB version sells for 600 and the 128GB for 650 and I think that's a nice price!

There is a USB 3.0 Port on the side, so yes any new mouse would work, coordlless or not.

yes although it isn't too great at advanced 3d graphics but will play most older stuff.
It can play some stuff at a decent rate, most stuff is playable at low and some at medium. Just look up HD 4000 benchmarks.
