Throughout history, mankind has labored to overcome the challenges presented by the natural world. People are forever trying to build houses on unstable land, or to make entire villages at the bases of active volcanos. It’s almost like the bigger the challenge, the more we want to make it work.
In 17th century France, protecting the country from the mighty English naval fleets was paramount. However, this was difficult to do when only the English Channel separated the two lands, which is a mere 20 miles wide at the shortest gap.

Just a bit pedantic there Richard. While that might be true, I clicked on this (most people probably did too) expecting something half between America and Europe. The only reason it doesn't get the clickbait thumbs down is because it was interesting.

Witness: The bicyclist was riding in the designated bike lane.
Drunk Driver: No officer, he was riding in the middle of the road.
Gross exaggeration to justify a bogus story.
Sorry, this fort is not in the "middle of the ocean". It is, in fact, about 1.5 miles from shore and is built on a rocky surface that is exposed at low tide. In the middle of a strait, yeah. But not the ocean.

Coffer dam around, dig to a firm foundation, lay a raft of stone, build on that. Use Dutch engineers, this is an inside-out canal. Brunel used that technique on the Rotherhithe rail tunnel, just he did it underground too: he kept the water out with pumps and air pressure, rather than a coffer dam. And drowned some of his crew.

It's not an oil rig, it's just a rig for crew and technical material during TV game shootings on spring time. The rest of the year, the rig is empty and place on its higher position for better resistance to the big tides and to the winter tempests. Sometimes the rig is moved to a local shipyard for repairs or upgrades, moments were the TV crew take new helicopter's shoots of the old fortress without this awful rig.
The Fort Boyard is classified as an historical monument in France, even if the building is a private property, TV production team can't do anything inside, they are rules to respect the integrity of the building, so they ask to build a rig for all their technical stuff (like electric power-plan) who can't be integrated in the building without destroying some walls to enter... The rig is on the Atlantic side of the fortress, so, most of the tourists can't this modern structure from the coast.

The show had a spinoff in Sweden, called Prisoners of the Fort (Fångarna på Fortet). It was pretty much the same as the French one and something so essential to the 90's in Sweden that anyone who lived during that time period will only need to hear the name Fort Boyard to hear the voice of former pro skiier Gunde Svan shouting at the "prisoners" to hurry up before they get locked in the cell.
The show is technically still on air, but nobody watches it anymore since more than 3/4 of the original cast is gone now, replaced by more celebrities or simply removed.

Remember, it wasn't just France who implemented the idea of Sea Forts. In the U.K a series of forts known as Palmerston Forts, were built in response to the 1859 Royal Commission dealing with the perceived threat of a French invasion. A group of these forts where based off the cost of Portsmouth, to protect the docks. They are commonly known as "Palmerston's Follies".
These four forts are called St Helens Fort (Privately owned), Horse Sand Fort (Owned by AmaZing Venues), No Mans Land Fort (Owned by AmaZing Venues), and Spitnak Fort (Owned by AmaZing Venues) and all stand to this day, and testament to the engineering of the time. Fun fact, during early 2000 a group of friends held 2 large legal raves on Spitbank Fort. Incredible events which I was a photograph at, and supplied my sound system too. Great days.
During the 2nd World War the forts were once again used to defend Portsmouth docks from the enemy. Painted with a form of dazzle camouflage, the forts were complemented with extensive concrete submarine defences 5.9 feet below sea level. Some of which still remain to this day.

Title is misleading. Makes it sound as if it's way out in the Atlantic coast off Ireland or something. But it's only off the coast of France. Also, very weird the way American's use the word 'Ancient'. It's hardly 'ancient'. It's only a few hundred years old. That's a baby in Europe.

Yer buildings like this exist all over the coast of England and France. In Portsmouth alone there's 4 of these off shore forts. They were comisioned because on shore guns couldn't reach the middle of the harbour channel so a ship could sail up the middle and not be under any threat. Irony is when the forts where completed guns has been invented which could reach the middle of the harbour channel. Now the the solent forts in Portsmouth have been converted to luxury hotels and musuems.

    • @alexawatson8942

Um...there's no possible way such a little amount of gunpowder could destroy France. Sure, if ALL of it were to have set off at once, that fort would have been a ruin, but it would never harm greater France. They put the guns and gunpowder on the top level as a precaution to prevent seawater from potentially leaking in and ruining the weapons and powder during a siege.

It’s pronounced Boy-Ard, it’s French, not bastardized English.
And as for building in the ocean, there’s a huge difference between building in the sea and building in the ocean, just as there is between building in a channel, or a forth, or an inlet. The French didn’t content with ocean class weather building this thing and you can clearly see the beach in one of the early photographs.

I've no idea how back in late medieval times,, they would have even begun to lay the supporting foundation for such a structure. Not even rudimentary steam powered pile driving or significant means to transport large rock or boulder piles to create some type of interlocking base were developed yet. The swift currents of the English Channel would have made the attempt of such a feat even more difficult. To me,, it would be just as interesting to see "what's underwater" as to search the rooms & hidden spaces of this half a millennia old structure. With the help of modern day technology & pneumatic driven devices & tools,, I can throw up the structure for a home on dry land in a little over a week's time,, no problem,, but the actual challenges they faced with a shifting underwater base & incredible circumstance escapes me how they even began to create such a structure. I simply don't know enough about their techniques during that time that would allow them to create such a fortress. Even etching out the blueprints for such an undertaking would have been daunting,, pages of parchment scribbled upon with excellent penmanship vs. an auto-cad system today where a fat engineer/architect simply sits at his desk adjoining point A to B substituting well laid out pre-determined calculations. The manmade marvels of the past such as huge castles tucked away on rocky cliffs should interest everyone & the ingenuity,, intelligence & dedication to build such structures should be vastly appreciated by those taking life for granted. Nature completes the cycle of creation through genetic building blocks,, man has to scratch his head,, come up with a dream & fulfill it through vast determination & the personal will it will be seen through. Our God created us in his image & we are a remarkable species if we simply take the time to appreciate our accomplishment with the will to preserve it..

This explains Tartaria. So long ago they had technologies to build such buildings yet they teach us that these technologies are fairly new. Doesn’t add up.
