Edith Head is one of the most recognizable names in film-fashion history. During her 60-year career she worked on more than 1,000 films and garnered 35 Academy Award nominations (winning 8). She spent 43 years at Paramount Pictures where she designed many of the iconic costumes worn by some of Hollywood's biggest actresses such as Barbara Stanwyck and Ginger Rogers. In this segment, we'll visit her historic costume collection on view through August 17th at the Decorative Arts Center in Lancaster.

Two of my favorite actresses worked at Paramount. Betty Grable from 1937 to 1939. Betty Hutton from 1942 to 1952.

Edith Head, Bette Davis, Carrie Fisher and later Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd, chose the same house to live in. Debbie Reynolds made many attempts to archive and museum display Hollywood legendary costume collections. Think AFI finally is displaying costumes 2023.

Interesting, but I wish the woman would tell us who wore what costume in what movie. She mentioned the "Wedding Dress", but who wore it and in what movie. I've always loved Edith Head's designs and even as a kid, I saw a lot of her on "Art Linkletter's House Party"! Yes, I really am that old (71)! Thank you for the upload.

We must remember she didn't do it alone, she have a very talented team of people working with her. A fantastic warehouse full of fabric and researchers at her disposition. I will not be surprised if she sometimes just signed her name in someone else's work.

I can't recall where I read it, but I remember reading that she pretty much did just that. She was the name that got the credit for a great deal of talented people. A lot of Hollywood greats are actually great scripts for the public...just a face representing the truly talented people behind the scenes.

@@cheenjoopearl Edith was the head of costume design for many films, which means SHE designed the clothes, how they would be worn and with what accessories. She also took measurements and did fittings, was present at screen tests for the clothes and was asked by many actresses to do their costumes. Now, when she first started out at Paramount, the sketches were not her own, but she was hired and from there her career grew. No, she did not do all the sewing for her designs. After all, there were a multitude of performers and a multitude of costumes to provide. It would be much too much for any one person to accomplish the task of having them ready on time according to the production schedule. The only time its possible that it may be considered that she took credit for another's work would be her Oscar for Sabrina, but it was Givenchy who has designed the costumes in question. However, the ensembles were made at Head's design studio. So there is that. No one in Hollywood works alone. Every job has a multitude of people behind it. You don't think an actor just pops in front the camera and says their lines do you? No. Nor does any one person simply make clothes magically appear.

"No one in Hollywood works alone. Every job has a multitude of people behind it." Exactly, and this is why theft is rampant in Hollywood. All of those creative geniuses not getting their due credit. Only one person can shine. Usually, the least talented of the bunch. Unjust and disappointing. And if this were you or someone you loved, you wouldn't be so quick to defend someone robbing you or your loved one of their contributions. Then again, maybe you would. A select few believe that to be "flattery."
"You don't think an actor just pops in front the camera and says their lines do you? " Yes, they do. After many hours of learning the lines or some being fed behind camera. Many high on drugs and don't remember.
"Nor does any one person simply make clothes magically appear." What was your point here to my comment? When was this stated or implied?
The point is that clothes did in fact appear...and possibly behind someone else's name who DID NOT design them. She said herself in interviews that she is NOT a DESIGNER. And as you stated so eloquently, "No one in Hollywood works alone"...and not everyone gets credit for their work in Hollywood. Theft is the name of the game in the industry. That is a fact. (Allegedly and possibly) Edith is no exception. And possibly to no fault of her own...she was the PR script to represent a huge creative group of people pooled together and she was the go-between of them and the studio/director; thus making her the "head" of the studio costume department. She was representing them all while being credited for their work. That is how Hollywood works...just like with music artists who do not truly write their music but get credit for it.
However, she was good as a "costume designer" who put looks together; something she has repeatedly said she did. THAT was her talent. And great at it she was. th-cam.com/video/gxNHEvmEFQk/w-d-xo.html
So, again, what was your purpose in replying to me directly? You made no additions nor negations to my comment.

Designers today have large teams, ateliers and cutters working for them. Thats why they can do many shows per year. No one works alone. It’s not humanly possible.
