Oakland Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas Shares Timeline for Selecting New Mayor

- As we approach 2025, Oakland is preparing for a significant leadership transition. Here’s what you need to know:
🔹 Dec 5, 2024: The Alameda County Registrar of Voters is expected to certify the November 2024 election results. Following this, the Oakland City Clerk will certify the results and prepare a resolution for the City Council to declare them.
🔹 Dec 17, 2024: The Oakland City Council will vote to declare the results and announce the Mayoral seat vacant. Council President Nikki Fortunato Bas is anticipated to serve as interim Mayor, with President Pro Tempore Dan Kalb as acting Council President. The Council will also declare the District 2 Council seat vacant and set the special election for April 15, 2025.
🔹 Dec 23, 2024: The nomination period for Mayoral and District 2 Councilmember candidates will open, ensuring a transparent and inclusive process for new leadership.
🔹 Jan 6, 2025: Newly elected Councilmembers will be sworn in. The Council may appoint a temporary District 2 Councilmember by majority vote until the special election. The Council will also elect its new President and President Pro Tempore, with the President continuing as interim Mayor until the special election.
🔹 Jan 17, 2025: The nomination period closes, finalizing the list of candidates for the upcoming election.
🔹 Apr 15, 2025: Oakland will hold a special election to fill both the Mayor and District 2 Councilmember seats, with the term running through January 4, 2027.
