regardless of the result, to even come close to a GM norm after years away from professional chess is an incredible accomplishment. Levy should be incredibly proud, and I hope to see him competing in more tournaments.

Yeah, the idea that he was this close to just spiking a GM norm in his first tournament, he needs to be happy with the ratings gains and have confidence that he can do it.
@@nicolassznajder780 Agrees. I'm not paying too much attention but yeah, the tournament/mission should be completed to the best of your abilities. It takes discipline, but it's the same discipline that needs employment in order to get everything right. Practice and perfection.

Levy was living a comfortable and successful life and willingly chose to make it harder because he wants to compete and become a GM. He has all my respect.
I find Levy inspiring. If you had told me 6 months ago that I’d be saying that I would have laughed in your face. But you gotta give respect where it’s due.
The difference between a draw and a win. He could rest on his laurels and be an IM forever (most people wouldn't care), or he can choose to go for glory by sacrificing time, effort and money to realize his dream of becoming grandmaster. I respect him for that.
This tournament is still a huge win for Levy. The norms are the easy part of becoming a grandmaster - the rating is the real challenge, and he's made great progress there. He's also proved that he can hang with the GM's. The norms will come.
Is it ? Getting a norm seems really hard. Glad he got plenty of rating points then

Levy indeed has had a great run. It's heartbreaking that he lost this game, but like you said, each tournament brings him closer to his goal. A great chess player must also be able to dust off the losses and come back stronger.
I'm very happy Hikaru doesn't seem to doubt Levy anymore. Because I feel like Hikaru is the reason he is returning to over-the-board chess and if Hikaru stopped believing in Levy he will most likely lose confidence. In my opinion. 🙂

Timing couldnt be better. Just finished watching round 7 recap and was looking for a stream of round 8 when i got the notification
So sad. I feel for Levy. I wasn't watching the stream, but I heard he was very emotional after the loss. It's tough to get cockblocked when you're so close. I hope he keeps his head up for the final round and shows what a competitor he really is.

I'm not a large Levy fan, but I have to admit this tournament was a successful outing for him. Even though he didn't achieve the norm this time, there are other opportunities, and he improved his rating quite a bit. He also made some significant decisions, showing his work is paying off. I'm sure he will come away learning more. Keep up the excellent work, Levy; you'll get there. It isn't supposed to be easy!

I watched this game live it was so heartbreaking. Levy had such a huge time advantage and a pretty good position. It felt like a brutal choke job.

It’s crazy because he didn’t take his own advise. He always says that 9/10 going backwards is not the right move and he’s also said that if you spend a lot of time on one move it’s usually going to result in a bad move.
It's okay, Levy did his best, we all make mistakes sometimes. He did well and I believe one day he will become a Gm.

Ah that's too bad but still a great performance from Levy. Looking forward to seeing him in his next tournament. I rarely follow tournaments this closely but with Levy doing good and Pia Cramling commentating her daughter's games it has been great fun to watch along. I don't know if there was anything special about the tournament itself for it to consistently show up in my feed but it felt like the stars aligned a bit for this one.

Honestly, I had a feeling when Suarez played h4 that Levy might throw away the advantage. The position was obviously great, but there are just enough complications to become nervous, and it's those kinds of positions where Levy tends to sometimes struggle.
I do agree though that if Levy found e3 with the idea of taking the h file, he probably would've won. I've noticed a lot in my games, esp over the board, that when I throw away the advantage but then a few moves later find a way to get the initiative back, that's always a massive confidence boost. Going from thinking about salvaging a draw to getting a second chance always gets you locked in, and I'm not sure Suarez would've been able to defend that position. But I did see on Levy's face that he looked sort of "over it" at that point. You can almost hear him saying something like "so I'm just losing?"
