I saw Vince play back in '94. Absolutely great. He's a super nice down to earth guy. A few years back he played at my local winery. The night before the show, a couple winery employees were out setting up cones in the parking lot. Vince steps out of his bus and asked if he could help set cones 'cause he was bored and it looked like fun. So they all had fun setting up cones. That's so cool. Little things like that make a lasting impression on people.
You know what I love about Jason? He doesn't get in the way of the people he interviews. SO tired of other guys not letting people finish their sentences. Great stuff.
Vince Gill is UNREAL... How can someone be the same as they appear ALL the time??? A Man who has a voice so KIND and a Guitar talent so Fierce yet be so Dang Nice??? We Love you Vince!!!
I always felt that the pedal steel guitar is a very technical instrument. Now I know it is. Paul Franklin must be a special kind of genius to be able to control it and create such wonderful sounds. Well done!
That white telecaster is iconic to Vince Gill, he plays it ALL THE TIME it is 100% the guitar I associate with him. That's so cool that it's an authentic 53' Telecaster, he bought it before he was famous for a great price back home, he doesn't just let it collect dust he plays it so often it has had to be re-fretted dozens of times, and it's still his number 1 all these years later. I love that.
Paul Franklin really knows every Part of a Steel & With His Father Building his own GUITARS, His Pedal, The Amp and Everything is so Wild, Just shows how much the Steel GUITAR Adds to any Song! Vince have a great respect for Him and all the Bands, Song Writer and Performance and both been Sessions Musicians for so many Albums it's incredible 🤘🎸🤠
He is iconic! The modesty is great but he just adapts so well with anyone. Paul Franklin has no match. Noone has the knowledge of his instrument as we)like as he. I love his connection to past steel players
Trevor Oliver. I had to laugh, mainly at myself, as I had never heard of a steel player call Noone!! Then it came to me, just before i went to Google search!! But, you have got me completely with 'as we)like as he'. Perhaps it is a 'secret code!?! It matters not, but thought you might be amused. Seriously though, whilst we all have personal favourites, and i would would put Emmons first and Franklin a very very close second. I personally think Emmons is (was) the most knowedgable - especially his development of the C6 copedent, in around a week. that really does take some beating. Would you not agree? For me Emmons understated and smooth delivery, has not been surpassed. And Franklin's playing the break on the You Tube live recordings of Together again with Vince Gill, is truly sublime. Especially the one where Paul puts his hand on his heart, as a thank you the audience. I listen to that at least once a week, sometimes several times! I will be interested to hear your thoughts
Love to hear Paul & Vince play with the Time Jumpers. I didn't hear Vince mention when he had the home studio done. If it was before 2014, Dawn Sears would have had Vince replacing some his windows, they all played well together. One thing I've learned is if you're going to kid or joke around with Vince, you'd better be quick on your feet, cuz he'll fire them right back and he'll have you rollin with laughter.
Paul Franklin... no words for that man... the depth of that knowledge, coupled with a staggering technique and feel... Oh man.... This before Vince started using Kelton Swade guitars, I understand he is a huge fan of them, excellent builder
Saw paul franklin in 1992 with dire straits, blew my mind with the steel guitar parts he played. Mark knopfler introduced him as the best pedal steel player in the world...enough said.
I’m 42 and have been an on and off guitar player since I was 10 or so, but never went down the pedal steel rabbit hole. Listening to Paul Franklin was blowing my mind lol.
Paul Franklin is by far the best steel player to ever play the instrument. Pure genius! Just take a look at his discography. It will absolutely astound you.
Sorry I'll let you finish but Vince Gill has one of the best guitar tones of all time. Best Rig Rundown yet! Now if you guys could do a BLACKBERRY SMOKE Rig Rundown my life would be complete.
WOW, Paul, Thank You So Much. I had a ZB Custom single neck 10 string, 3 pedals and 2 knee levers that was stolen and I've never been able to replace it on disability. Now I play guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Bass, Piano plus 8 more instruments, And some of them were stolen too that I've never been able to replace. Vince, I'm a Tele Man too, I was able to get a 2006 Tele Deluxe with the S1 switching that is a 60th anniversary model for Fender Musical Instruments, They didn't find it under the bed. I Love it. I Love your Music. Thank You Both for sharing and May God Bless you Both
Paul Franklin is a monster on Steel guitar, played with all the greats including Mark Knopfler. Vince Gill is an amazing vocalist and monster guitar slinger as well!!
My brother worked on music row and went through that flood...so many sad losses of musical history those days. But Nashville was a resilient city and they have bounced back amazingly well...
rodaho54 o come on buddy, its not that bad!!...LOL! im a steel player and have been blessed to have been coached by some of the instruments' true masters. the fundamentals are kinda difficult but once you understand about string/pick blocking, bar placement and how the pedals on your guitar work. then the rest is just basically playing by ear and messing around with it. aomw of the best and iconic intros were done by pure accident and experiment. most 6 stringers are dicks because they keep alot of their stuff to themselves and won't show nothing to nobody. steel players aren't like that for the most part. they're happy to show you exactly how they did a particular intro, lick or whatever. a great example, my favorite intro is on the vern gosdin song "set em up joe" the man who did it in the studio is jim vest. he is a wonderful human being. i had the high and middle parts down pat but the low end was kicking my ass. when i played it for him he chuckled and said i sounded great but i was missing the crucial part. without hesitation he showed me what to do and after i ran through it about 3 times i had it down! i played it at a show and people said later that it sounded just like the recording!! made me feel incredibly humble
Oh man - this is 8 years later but I *just* saw this. Will Owsley was my childhood guitar teacher at 13, in Anniston, AL. We stayed in loose touch and on and off intersected all the way from his move to Nashville, the Peter Asher era, etc etc, then throughout his Amy / Shania days, and lastly maybe a year before his death. I've heard Vince say some lovely things about Will in print before, but this means so much to me - to hear and see him with that guitar, and what it means to him. because of a guy who meant so much to a lot of people - basically everyone who knew him. He always said Amy and Vince were just about the best people he'd ever met, and it rings true to me for sure. Thanks for this.
This is a very interesting interview. Paul is amazing. I love Vince he is a real gentleman and I love to listen to his stories and association with my hero with Chet Atkins.
Honestly, I have been playing guitar for 45 years... and by the 6 minute mark, I felt like I was listening to an astrophysicist explaining the math behind the creation of a black hole! WOW... I really should have studied more when I was younger..... Incredible understanding of his instrument.
Not only a genius player but a totally nice guy, Had the pleasure of meeting him in Uk in 90;s at Gerry Hogans; festival, he played on stage with four other steel players but when he cut loose they all just watched and marvelled at him, just as the charlie Daniels song says , he's the best theres ever been' on whats undoubtably the hardest instrument to master .
Love learning about the pedal steel. I had an inkling about the function but next to nothing about the specifics or the mechanics. Sincerely, a fascinating look at the instrument. Oh and Vince is great as usual.
Paul to me has always been a great player! Saw him years ago at a live taping of the Ronnie Prophet Show with Mel T. Hope to meet him playing with Vince at Casino Rama, Orillia this May long weekend........
A window into the mind of a couple genius's is a treat. If your not interested in what Paul Franklin has to say about the steel... well, never mind, you wouldn't get it anyway... move along.
Yes !! Paul is a genius on this steel gitbox !! Vince is a master as well of course, on the teleblaster et al.!!!. Thank you guys for this tech article that brings all the reality behind the music 🎶🎶👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
I learned more about pedal steel than I ever thought I would. I'm a big Vince/Tele fan and I believe I got my money's worth! Jason may not sound sparky and spontaneous but he delivers the goods! He's not as cute as Rebecca, but there ain't nothin' we can do about that.

Fun Paul Franklin fact. 1972’s Gallery song “Its so nice to be with you”. That’s a 14 year old Paul Franklin playing the pedal steel.
Paul and Vince both are just such awesome musicians and people - I'm speechless.
