I saw Vince play back in '94. Absolutely great. He's a super nice down to earth guy. A few years back he played at my local winery. The night before the show, a couple winery employees were out setting up cones in the parking lot. Vince steps out of his bus and asked if he could help set cones 'cause he was bored and it looked like fun. So they all had fun setting up cones. That's so cool. Little things like that make a lasting impression on people.
A humble Legend. Vince Gill, as good as they get.
guitarsword1 he most certainly is
A man like him that can play steel like that, I just have all the respect in the world for them. They're geniuses in my book.
You know what I love about Jason? He doesn't get in the way of the people he interviews. SO tired of other guys not letting people finish their sentences.
Great stuff.
Jason who?
@@sharpenflat6002 Jason Shadrick.
@@JohnFriberg Never heard of him.
Vince Gill is same way. Humble and never dominates others
Vince Gill is UNREAL...
How can someone be the same as they appear ALL the time???
A Man who has a voice so KIND and a Guitar talent so Fierce yet be so Dang Nice???
We Love you Vince!!!
Fun Paul Franklin fact. 1972’s Gallery song “Its so nice to be with you”. That’s a 14 year old Paul Franklin playing the pedal steel.
Paul and Vince both are just such awesome musicians and people - I'm speechless.
All you have to do is listen to "The Bug" by Dire Straits!
I always felt that the pedal steel guitar is a very technical instrument. Now I know it is. Paul Franklin must be a special kind of genius to be able to control it and create such wonderful sounds. Well done!
That white telecaster is iconic to Vince Gill, he plays it ALL THE TIME it is 100% the guitar I associate with him. That's so cool that it's an authentic 53' Telecaster, he bought it before he was famous for a great price back home, he doesn't just let it collect dust he plays it so often it has had to be re-fretted dozens of times, and it's still his number 1 all these years later. I love that.
Vince Gill. One of the best in the business. True talent, and a personality to match
Vince Gill is such a great guy, he’s the kind of human everyone should aspire to be.
Paul Franklin really knows every Part of a Steel & With His Father Building his own GUITARS, His Pedal, The Amp and Everything is so Wild, Just shows how much the Steel GUITAR Adds to any Song! Vince have a great respect for Him and all the Bands, Song Writer and Performance and both been Sessions Musicians for so many Albums it's incredible 🤘🎸🤠
Gotta love listening to passionate artists. Vince is 'The Man'.
He is iconic! The modesty is great but he just adapts so well with anyone. Paul Franklin has no match. Noone has the knowledge of his instrument as we)like as he. I love his connection to past steel players
Trevor Oliver. I had to laugh, mainly at myself, as I had never heard of a steel player call Noone!! Then it came to me, just before i went to Google search!!
But, you have got me completely with 'as we)like as he'. Perhaps it is a 'secret code!?! It matters not, but thought you might be amused.
Seriously though, whilst we all have personal favourites, and i would would put Emmons first and Franklin a very very close second. I personally think Emmons is (was) the most knowedgable - especially his development of the C6 copedent, in around a week. that really does take some beating. Would you not agree?
For me Emmons understated and smooth delivery, has not been surpassed. And Franklin's playing the break on the You Tube live recordings of Together again with Vince Gill, is truly sublime. Especially the one where Paul puts his hand on his heart, as a thank you the audience. I listen to that at least once a week, sometimes several times!
I will be interested to hear your thoughts
Franklin steels have some of the best tone out there designed by pure genius. Paul Franklin is a very talented and humble guy.
Love to hear Paul & Vince play with the Time Jumpers. I didn't hear Vince mention when he had the home studio done. If it was before 2014, Dawn Sears would have had Vince replacing some his windows, they all played well together. One thing I've learned is if you're going to kid or joke around with Vince, you'd better be quick on your feet, cuz he'll fire them right back and he'll have you rollin with laughter.
Vince is such a calm and homely guy, I mean listen to his voice.
Just sounds like a well balanced person telling a bit of history.
The sound of the pedal steel is just beautiful. I had no idea so much theory was involved in playing one. Great review PG!
Saw paul franklin in 1992 with dire straits, blew my mind with the steel guitar parts he played. Mark knopfler introduced him as the best pedal steel player in the world...enough said.
NO ONE SUCKS MORE than knopfler, except clapton ... enough said ... wait - there's that fruit emmanuel too
+cpt444 You a Kirk Hammett fan aye?
You can say one of the best musicians in the world .
i prefer robert randolph's style, but no doubt both are world class.
I can't imagine that guy could out-play Robert Randolph, but I'm no pedal steel expert.
Vince Gill is one of the most accomplished Country Musicians of all time and an amazing guitar player.
Paul Franklin... no words for that man... the depth of that knowledge, coupled with a staggering technique and feel... Oh man....
This before Vince started using Kelton Swade guitars, I understand he is a huge fan of them, excellent builder
Oh man - this is 8 years later but I *just* saw this. Will Owsley was my childhood guitar teacher at 13, in Anniston, AL. We stayed in loose touch and on and off intersected all the way from his move to Nashville, the Peter Asher era, etc etc, then throughout his Amy / Shania days, and lastly maybe a year before his death. I've heard Vince say some lovely things about Will in print before, but this means so much to me - to hear and see him with that guitar, and what it means to him. because of a guy who meant so much to a lot of people - basically everyone who knew him. He always said Amy and Vince were just about the best people he'd ever met, and it rings true to me for sure. Thanks for this.
True gentleman genius, so modest, so great.. great interview...
WOW, Paul, Thank You So Much. I had a ZB Custom single neck 10 string, 3 pedals and 2 knee levers that was stolen and I've never been able to replace it on disability. Now I play guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, Bass, Piano plus 8 more instruments, And some of them were stolen too that I've never been able to replace. Vince, I'm a Tele Man too, I was able to get a 2006 Tele Deluxe with the S1 switching that is a 60th anniversary model for Fender Musical Instruments, They didn't find it under the bed. I Love it. I Love your Music. Thank You Both for sharing and May God Bless you Both
Vince is a great musician.I love to hear his playing on ballads,so emotional. If he plays fast, he’s also one of the best.
Paul Franklin is by far the best steel player to ever play the instrument. Pure genius! Just take a look at his discography. It will absolutely astound you.
+JStreetStudio I really enjoyed Ralph Mooney's work on many Waylon Jennings records also. He had a terrific sound.
cornshucker77
They just don't come any more real (and high functioning!) than these two guys. What a pleasure to watch.
Sorry I'll let you finish but Vince Gill has one of the best guitar tones of all time. Best Rig Rundown yet! Now if you guys could do a BLACKBERRY SMOKE Rig Rundown my life would be complete.
"Sometimes a telecaster can be a little bit bright." I love it.
Vince has always had the smoothest voice in country.
Now I know why I've liked Vince as my favorite for all these years!
This is a very interesting interview. Paul is amazing. I love Vince he is a real gentleman and I love to listen to his stories and association with my hero with Chet Atkins.
At 12:50 the sound Paul makes with the Steel Guitar sounds exactly like the intro to “For Those About to Rock” ....pretty awesome!
I’m 42 and have been an on and off guitar player since I was 10 or so, but never went down the pedal steel rabbit hole. Listening to Paul Franklin was blowing my mind lol.
dont know anything about country music, but these guys seem like great musicians and real nice guys. great interview as always.
Honestly, I have been playing guitar for 45 years... and by the 6 minute mark, I felt like I was listening to an astrophysicist explaining the math behind the creation of a black hole! WOW... I really should have studied more when I was younger..... Incredible understanding of his instrument.
Glad it’s not just me! Holy smoke, that’s no joke
I feel like he's reading me the Mel Bay book upside-down.
Wow! I discovered rolling the tone back about 3 years ago on my own on my tele! Glad to hear Vince learned that from Roy!
One of the best Rundowns yet. Great job Jason!
My favorite rundown thus far, Paul is a great musician -- excellent!
Vince impressed me the most out of all of the great players who took part in the 'Crossroads' concert.
Touche' that!!
My brother worked on music row and went through that flood...so many sad losses of musical history those days. But Nashville was a resilient city and they have bounced back amazingly well...
Love learning about the pedal steel. I had an inkling about the function but next to nothing about the specifics or the mechanics. Sincerely, a fascinating look at the instrument. Oh and Vince is great as usual.
Paul Franklin is a monster on Steel guitar, played with all the greats including Mark Knopfler. Vince Gill is an amazing vocalist and monster guitar slinger as well!!
Two icons!! LOVE it!
Paul Franklin leaves.....me speechless every time......
Super cool! I love metal and blues but a great clean country tone is sooo cool. This is one of the best rig programs i have seen you guys do. Thanks
After hearing Paul's explanation of the steel I'm glad I play a 6 string.
rodaho54 o come on buddy, its not that bad!!...LOL! im a steel player and have been blessed to have been coached by some of the instruments' true masters. the fundamentals are kinda difficult but once you understand about string/pick blocking, bar placement and how the pedals on your guitar work. then the rest is just basically playing by ear and messing around with it. aomw of the best and iconic intros were done by pure accident and experiment. most 6 stringers are dicks because they keep alot of their stuff to themselves and won't show nothing to nobody. steel players aren't like that for the most part. they're happy to show you exactly how they did a particular intro, lick or whatever. a great example, my favorite intro is on the vern gosdin song "set em up joe" the man who did it in the studio is jim vest. he is a wonderful human being. i had the high and middle parts down pat but the low end was kicking my ass. when i played it for him he chuckled and said i sounded great but i was missing the crucial part. without hesitation he showed me what to do and after i ran through it about 3 times i had it down! i played it at a show and people said later that it sounded just like the recording!! made me feel incredibly humble
razor75250 He said that 3 years ago......and he looks really old so.......well ill let you do the math. Sorry for your (more than likely) loss
No kidding. Makes me happy I'm a bass player
rodaho54 me too!
Glad I'm not the only one falling asleep.
One of the best rig rundowns. Great stuff.
Thanks to Paul for a great review of his methods etc. Much appreciated.
Thank you Premier Guitar. Brilliant!
I can't say honestly I'm a fan or know much about Vince gill, but I found his instruments and the pedal stuff fascinating.
Thank God for this video I adore these two
Paul Franklin is a genius!
Yes !! Paul is a genius on this steel gitbox !! Vince is a master as well of course, on the teleblaster et al.!!!. Thank you guys for this tech article that brings all the reality behind the music 🎶🎶👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Well...I guess it'd be a full time gig restringing guitars for Mr Gill! Awesome rig review, really enjoyed this one a lot. Vince Gill is a great artist & person.
I was introduced to pedal steel players...starting with Buddy Emmons.....that sound......stayed with me ......I can't get enough......of that sound
Me either like playing a traditional county music gig is more fun than any rock or blues gig you'll ever play
I saw Vince with Paul Franklin in his band 9 days ago and they did some of those Haggard songs. It was a great show!
Fantastic Rig Rundown. Total class.
vince gill is one of the greatest guitar players in history
Caught these boys (Vince & Paul) in Cincinnati last week. Ol' Vinny Gill & Friends tore the roof off of the Taft Theatre
Not only a genius player but a totally nice guy, Had the pleasure of meeting him in Uk in 90;s at Gerry Hogans; festival, he played on stage with four other steel players but when he cut loose they all just watched and marvelled at him, just as the charlie Daniels song says , he's the best theres ever been' on whats undoubtably the hardest instrument to master .
I could take so much more pedal steel. I'm so impressed by the complexity and emotion you can get out of the pedal steel. They always make me feel like a lazy, inadequate musician whenever I listen to one and I'm not much of a country fan at all.
To me, this is the best rig rundown I've seen. Very informative
This was a very cool rig rundown
I absolutely love this! I want to be Paul Franklin and Vince Gill is the purest vocalist I've ever heard…… my opinion….
I learned more about pedal steel than I ever thought I would. I'm a big Vince/Tele fan and I believe I got my money's worth! Jason may not sound sparky and spontaneous but he delivers the goods! He's not as cute as Rebecca, but there ain't nothin' we can do about that.
If you watch this channel it’s amazing at the amount of guitars that were lost in the flood in Nashville!
I love Vince gives him that Roy Nicholas lick at the very end and just stares at him like take that! 🤣🤣🤣
thanks for doing a pedal steel rundown, super insightful!
Two of my favorite players
A window into the mind of a couple genius's is a treat. If your not interested in what Paul Franklin has to say about the steel... well, never mind, you wouldn't get it anyway... move along.
About 25 yrs ago, I worked under a steel guitar Luthier. You cannot believe how complex they are. The tuning will give you fits. The pedals & knee pads have to be in perfect tuning when they are engaged. And these guys have dog hearing. A good steel player needs to be really sharp. But what a sound.
Paul to me has always been a great player! Saw him years ago at a live taping of the Ronnie Prophet Show with Mel T. Hope to meet him playing with Vince at Casino Rama, Orillia this May long weekend........
one of my all time fav country players, amazing singer song writer also
this is the best rundown ever. no episode comes close to this one. it has me naked
Nice explanation of the pedal steel.
Great job Paul And Vince.
The Respect and Patience Vince,,, The STAR , show's the 20 Sum'in interviewer And his steel player is a testament to his character!!!
Could you envision Beyonc'ee or Jay-Z waiting behind a Musician SERVANT???
Vince Gill is THE DEAL!!!
Vince...class act!
Cold cold heart on a steel guitar melts me into a puddle on the floor. Wish I could play one.
Country musicians who have been touring for a long time and theyre important because theyre good and play nice guitars.
Paul Franklin is great..
Paul is unbelievable!
Vince is such a nice guy.
Two consummate musicians and at the top of their craft.
Paul's playing on the early Marty Stuart recording 's. is first class
Vince says " I'm married to the perfect woman , Amie loves music and loves people in the house ....the greatest thing I ever could have dreamed is to have music and the people who make music in the house " lucky man
Great Explanation and history lesson. Thank you very much.
A great interview Jason
Sweet Pea. One of the best ever.
SUPER ...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vince Gill is the most!!!!
I played a gig (jazz concert) in Tampa once with Doug Jernigan, and he sounded like Bill Evans on steel guitar! It was a lot of fun, and very educational. It was recorded, and if I can ever find it, I'll try to post it!
Steel guitar players...
Buddy did speed line all country legends of his day.
Buddy is was/is the man
Brilliant sou!
Very informative...excellent video! Thanks.
I love the pedal steel. There are so many things you can do with it. I wish I knew how to play...
Great stuff. But dang! that flood claimed so many guitars. Every guy you hear whether it's Brad or Keith or Vince or whoever, talks about the dozens of guitars lost in the flood. Thousands and thousands of dollars and tons of history. What a tragedy. I know Keith Urban mentioned at least one guitar that survived that sounded better after the flood....interesting.
yea they saved a few a keiths, they said after the wood dried out they strangely weighed less and seemed tighter and sounded better, nobody can explain it but they said they weren't complaining lol
@@sstroh08i actually heard about that too, very interesting, i may just have to soak one of my teles & dry it out & see what happens as an experiment. Maybe I'll sound like Vince or Keith, or maybe I'll still sound more like Will Shatner
Yeah I've heard multiple people say there flood guitars sounded better after the flood
Nice to hear the late Will Owsley get a mention and to see his tele custom. What a tragic loss.
Man that tele custom is beautiful.
Fascinating
Vince Gill is about as great a musician as I can think of, and I think even he is perplexed at that pedal steel guitar talk.
