I'm numb to it for the most part anymore. I'll still block it and actively fight it, but it's not done anything new and no one is doing anything about it. If anything my focus is fighting having to do any of it myself (for work obligations) and just defending the act of creation so one day some generation may actually enjoy creating, rather than it being an existential conflict.

Personally I am not worried about AI that much, especially with the AI hate and the fact that Nightshade and Glaze exists, while also a ton of detection tools are being made to spot AI, using anything AI generated will be a huge risk for an artist's reputation, because once someone discovers AI in your art, you are cooked and a majority of your audience wont respect you anymore, look what happened to all of these artists recently that got cancelled because people found it was ai generated.

What I've notice about the rise of gen-Ai images is that now clients are now coming with a "brief" made of midjourney images.
While it sometimes it clarifies expectations for a project, more often than not, it muddies the water. Turning what should be a quick meeting to understand their needs into a longer conversation trying to make sense of what they want from a group of random, disconnected images. Or they want you to "copy" the style on one AI image they generated across a series of new ones. I think this may be way of things for a while. Stay strong out there fellow artists.

I was listening to a discussion about Genndy Tartakovsky's evolution in cinematography, and a thought immediately came to mind while watching your video: AI can’t evolve a style like a human can. A human takes years, even decades, to transform and evolve their style into something new. I’m not talking about technical improvement; I’m talking about a level of mastery that’s too abstract for a machine to understand.
18:00 Exactly! People are obsessed with technical art skills, but that’s not what defines an artist. Once we break through the technical barrier, we realize that. I’m a veteran artist, and it took me a long journey to get there (That’s why you often see many veteran artists simplifying their styles-it takes a high level of refinement to do so). I just hope newcomers won’t give up because of AI and that they’ll come to understand this one day too.

Seriously though, Genndy’s work is makes me intrigued every time I watch his shows.
I’d also add other shows like Disney XD’s Motorcity and Nickelodeon’s Rise of the tmnt, the fluidity in the action scenes is pure human work, but even simplistic stuff like Sonic X or SpongeBob, or your average low budget shows or comic or whatever, it may not be as fluid, the art can be simple, heck it could even have a bunch of errors, but just because it’s not eye candy, it still has soul, and you can always tell what has a human working with their machines and what they have, rather than just letting the machine do all the work for them.

Additionally, it's only getting more and more homogeneous. AI is scraping from its own generated images.
The only thing I used AI for was when I had a very interesting dream. If I had gotten up and tried to draw the thing from my dream, it would have faded from my mind by the time I got to my computer and in the process of drawing.
So I described the creature from the dream to ChatGPT while half asleep, and was able to actually get something pretty close.
Then, with that mental image cemented in my mind, I went back to sleep.
I woke up, remembered typing that up, looked at the images... got reminded of the creature and the dream it was from, then sat down and drew it. And of course, my drawing was much better, had better anatomy and composition and better blending of the features that I remembered from the dream. AI image generation can be a useful tool if used correctly, but I am not threatened by it at all.
Funny thing? I have actually been doing better since this whole AI thing started! It seems like people want custom art that looks the way they want it more than ever!
I was never threatened or scared from the start. I mess with AI image generation sometimes just because it's a novelty, and because I am curious about how it's growing. And it's gotten more and more and more samey-samey and worse and worse at anything that has a semblance of creativity.
I honestly miss the earlier days of AI when it was surreal and really interesting to look at, now it's just boring.

    • @SaHaRaSquad
      @SaHaRaSquad หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, AI is what finally pushed me to start drawing because I realized it's the only way to get exactly what I want. The problem with AI generation is that it fully takes over an important part of the creation process and replaces any control with a random number, and so if you actually want something specific it turns into a virtual slot machine where you don't even know beforehand if you can win without lowering your standards.

The power of art is, and always has been the context around a piece. Whether that is one concept or an entire universe of worldbuilding. AI can't do that and integrate it fully, think about ramifications and come up with unique consequences which manifest themselves in the design. AI will never show you a dull blade on a character if not requested.

When AI first came to the seen, I predicted that all the artist who only draw generic anime girls would be the first/main ones to be replaced, and I was right. An artist needs to have more to offer if they want to stand out above the rest.

I dont get how people who prompt by texting into a box have so much pride in themselves for generating something especially those who havent made art a day in their lives. You raise an interesting point regarding the different playing fields of artists and Ai creators and I can agree with it to some extent. However, there are some popular artists who have started utilizing AI as part of their process, and most people following them or hiring them have no idea about it. It creates an unrealistic expectation of skill as well as the speed in which artworks can be created. This creates an unfair "advantage" to the artists utilizing AI and raises the level of competition in the industry. AI is still a big issue - and sometimes the threat comes from inside the art community itself.

And yes, it’s tragic to see champs like the one you mentioned using AI, but they’re so large it doesn’t matter for them. They have all the real hard skills, so using AI doesn’t bring them anything new but a potential new toy. The real issue is the misperception it introduces where it deludes younger artists into thinking AI will help transform them into their hero artists. But it won’t and never will

They’re not quitting or having a hard time finding work - often it’s quite the opposite, their work suddenly looks more impressive resulting in more work and popularity. It obviously doesn’t help them develop into better artists, but it helps them making a seemingly faster, better looking end product. To understand the gulf between art and AI-generated imagery, we only need to look at why we, as humans, are drawn to images in the first place. Ever since the caveman days, art has been used to tell stories and to express ourselves. It's been true of every major art movement throughout history. The old European church frescos, to tell the stories of the bible to people who couldn't read. Realism, to tell the stories of the real world in an authentic manner. Impressionism, seeing the world through a new pair of eyes by painting with light. Cubism, true depiction of an object by painting it from all angles at once. And those are just a few examples among many. Ai art? "Uh, it looks kinda pretty, so it's art, bro". Art is a mode of expression and, most importantly, communication. AI art is, in the wise words of an art teacher of mine, nothing but a visual fart. It gives off a stink and the moment it's gone, everyone's forgotten it.

The key to all art is the creative vision of the creator and more rarely the creators. Even in photography, the artistic sensibilities of the photographer observing the scene causes them to create art using a camera. AI can copy and generate something derivative but it can't create something unique and new or creatively reinterpret something.
Also, my passion is photography, I am an avid amatuer photographer who got into photography for the artistic possibilities of photography. To me the joy is going out and finding a scene that I have strong enough reaction to that I take a photo, it's the journey of discovery not the final image itself that is important.

I noticed that artists who outright started using it became vilified as a whole. For obvious reasons since it was a definitive downgrade and ruination. So it makes me wonder why they initially got into art in the first place. 🤔
The whole "I can finally get my thing out" reminds me of a parody by Doobus Goobus of where someone says "It's a passion project I've had in my mind since I was a baby; this is what my life has been leading up to *man*!"

This is making me feel a bit better. I was in the camp of using AI to see ideas come to life, i tried it but got extremely disappointed. It never looked the way I imagined it being. I've never had belief in myself that i could ever be able to produce skilled drawings that looked good enough for myself.
My paradigm started to shift after i tried to make a story rich video game and realized i couldn't because of the just all that goes into making a game, i started thinking about graphic novels or manga and the potential to tell stories that feel like games, and now I want pursue that. I want to tell stories so badly that I have to try to draw AI will never create what i want 😢

Are the AI art tools that useless? If so why companies are cutting jobs / reducing designers teams? maybe they over hired during covid and now they are using AI as excuse? Are there really cost savings on getting rid , let’s say, half of designer team and expect the rest to use AI tools to maintain the job pace? All look like decisions were made based on quarterly reports, but not in the long term. Are there any numbers around that show how companies are performing after follow the AI trend for 6M? can any other reader shared some links? It will be good to present numbers. A friend shared this video after we had a conversation about his future and AI.

HAHA I dont think you uderstand the problem here, good sir. After 15 years in the industry I was forced to freelance. Over the last year, clients started to require me to "just fix this after AI" or "just edit this AI upscaled set of assets" or "Do this but use AI, cause we dont have the budget" etc. And slowly they just stopped calling. I was reaching out to new clients started to really look for job hard... aaaaand nothing. I now work as a security guard for peanuts art career over at 40 years old, familly and bills to pay ... This is what AI means for people like me. Clients wanted to save money and so they did...I was thrown out of the race, any race.

I’m sorry to hear that happened, but why is that funny and why are you using your personal example to try to prove your experience is every artists’ doom? Again, so sorry about your hardship, but can I be honest? You’re proving my points in this video. You can't blame AI for what happened. AI didn’t make you give up. You did that. See? Look you’re 40, not 400, so why not pivot and rebuild? 💪 just because the last 15 years brought you to this point, why give up on the remaining 50-60 years and choose to be miserable? It's a setback for sure, but only a loss if you give up. Sounds like you have way too much experience to just lay down in the dirt and die when clearly, art really means something to you. I'd say that's worth reconfiguring your life and building a new dream, my friend

So you see how you're just caught up in the despair of your circumstance? It sucks no doubt, but when you have some time away from the situation, how about using this time to pivot into another artistic endeavor that you can start working towards? You sound like you have quite a bit of professional experience, and when you clear your mind and reconsider all of that accumulated knowledge you've gained, I have no doubt that you will discover another artistic interest that will be more rewarding and more lucrative than what you just got out of. It may take time, but you're probably not dying any time soon.
It's a set back, not a death sentence dude. But, your outlook is your choice. Choose carefully👍

@@TheArtMentor Thanks I am well familiar with principles of being in control of own choices/reactions. Things are not that simple. The bank wont wait for me to reorient my self and pivot thowards new exciting art future. It wants its money and it wants it now. By grabbing a shitjob I am taking huge amounts of time away from the art. Yes I can choose to just not pay anything and eventually loose the house, I dont count things like that as much of a choice. Sometimes theres a cascade of coincidences that no amount of positive thinking can overcome. I hope you will never have to go thru that. have a good one!

Hey can I say that I totally understand what you're saying, but I also think you're mishearing me a bit? Obviously you need to pay bills and work, and I'd never advocate for quitting any job and going for art without a solid plan or practice. However, why can't you start to build your new dream and focus WHILE you work? I work a full time job too, my friend. We all have the same 24 hours in a day. Perhaps this is too fresh for you right now, but I sincerely hope that when you're fed up more with the pain of working that soulless, dead end job than the pain of starting to build something new and meaningful, you have the strength to build it. It's not empty positive talk. It's realistic and manageable strategy. You can do it man, but not if you give up before trying. Take care

Art is communication. It's about establishing connections. Even if you're not an artist. Even if you care nothing about art. We fundamentally crave that connection with other people.
We don't grow attached to pretty pictures slopped together by some AI. We grow attached to characters. We get immersed in the worlds that other people build. We resonate with elements of these characters and collectively breathe life into them via our imaginations. AI can't give that to us.
Why do you think so much of the most popular AI art is of established characters? Why do think fanart in general is so popular? Mario, Hatsune Miku, various anime characters... It's because those characters resonate with people. And we as artists are the ones who spend our lives learning how to do that. It's not a skill you can fake with artificial glitter and sparkles.
Oh, and don't think AI Gen tech is immune to enshitification. Even if these AI companies dodge regulators and get what they want, this tech is expensive to run. Right now they're just trying to expand as much as possible, establish a firm spot in the marketplace. And that means they need to make their product as cheap and appealing as possible. But as soon as they've accomplished that goal, expect the experience of using their products to become a lot more expensive and a lot worse. Because their priority won't be on delivering the best product, it will be on recouping costs and generating profit.
The same thing that happened with Uber and companies like it.
Imagine being an "artist" whose ability to create is locked behind 5 minutes of unskippable ads. I'll stick with pen and paper thank you very much
