I think Aladino's perfection is rubbing off on you. The inside is becoming beautiful like the rest of the boat. All of your hard work is paying off, well done.

Pitfalls in abundance-but progress still being made! Yes, you would likely have varnished the handrails prior to installing if you could turn back time. And stirring rubbed effect varnish-( who hasn’t discovered that pitfalls at least once?) The results are truly elegant!
It was a total pleasure, Maya, to see your opening of the video and hear your explanations. And, you are totally right. The aesthetics are important in themselves as well as as a protection of the materials that helps extend the time needed for you to start maintenance again.
Everything is looking great 👌🏼 I think I’d have put two or three coats of varnish on the inside of the scalloped part of the handrails before fitting them to the boat but hey they look great 👍🏼 oh and there’s no a painter out there that’s never forgotten to stir the paint at least once 😬 old habits die hard now , I give it a damn good shake then pop the lid off then give it a good stir and then stir it again just before I use it .
This will be far better a Cape George vessel than it ever was fresh off the slips. EXCELLENT jobs both--crafts skills at their best. A superb vessel to take you wherever fancy leads you both.

One of the tricks I learned years ago when I worked as a professional boat painter, was during the last few final coats to scratch the surface with a 3M pad gently. It does not break the skin but simply takes the gloss away so you can see any "holidays" and fill them in while the coat is still wet. 600 grit sandpaper will do the trick also but creates a bit more dust. Then the surface gets cleaned with fresh clean thinner on a clean diaper, then tacked off with a fresh tac-rag. Maya's finish looks as good as any professional.
Maya is also becoming a perfectionist😮 It's fantastic to see your enthusiasm, both in your body language and in the tone of your voice, as Magic Carpet becomes a beautiful creation. You should both be so proud of what you've accomplished 👍
Maya, I know immediately when it is your music. I love when it shows up in the soundtrack and when you perform a piece for the video. It’s so good you are picking up your violin again. It is so much a part of you! We did a very difficult build that was completed two years ago that took my painting studio out of commission for two years. I became extremely depressed during this time, which is something I have never suffered from in the past. Even when I could paint again it took awhile to get back my creativity. I hope you are never separated from your music again. Again, thank you for sharing a look in to your heart through your music. Thank you for acknowledging and sharing the life of your patron. Such a wonderful long life!
Hi Sherri. Thank you so much for sharing your story here -- I resonate with it so, so, so deeply. My mom has been quite concerned about me throughout various stages of this process and at one point wanted me to consider medication for depression. I refused, because I've never had a problem with that in the past -- I knew that in my case it wasn't my brain chemistry, it was a situation that was draining me totally and completely. It has taken quite a while for me as well to return to creativity, but I think that process is finally picking up steam again. The work/life balance that we've created here in Canada is SO much better. Thank you for sharing your experience and validating my own. It's an experience that I NEVER would've predicted before starting this project, and quite frankly if someone told me I might feel this way back then, I wouldn't have believed them. What a lesson. Thank you again for sharing.
@@SailingMagicCarpet I felt the same way about the depression being situational. And I was right! At least for me. Continue to take care of yourself and of your relationships. So, so important!
Maya, the best decision to finish the interior to your exact desires. After all this huge amount of work highlighting the beautiful interior that you will see every day will be the perfect finale to the completion of your new home.🌞💖
Just so you know, as one normally insensitive to subtle differences in shades of white, the more I see what you chose for your boat interior, the more certain I am that I will copy it in my project. Translation: your aesthetic sense and contribution to this boat amazes me.
Aw I’m so happy to hear that! Actually, I think that shade (RAL9010) has become so popular that Epifanes now carries it as a standard colour rather than needing to get it custom mixed :)
Maya’s happy dance shows your happiness has returned! MC2 is shaping up to be a beautiful vessel! It is inspiring to you guys build your home, the warmth you are putting into the wood work is amazing! ❤
Varnishing with a gloss varnish all five to eight coats and finishing with a semi-gloss coat is considered a good method. The glossy paint is claimed to be a stronger one. The interior is well balanced, easy to overview and with substantial storage compartments. The wooden details give a warm impression and the bright surfaces create a nice room. We wish you every success.

I think it's a great idea to paint the ceilings now rather than wait. The extra work will be so appreciated when the project is complete and you're sitting inside appreciating it over the coming years.
How cool to be able to connect with someone so deeply over a mutual love- and for you to not know it was someone of a generation almost gone feels extra special. 💖
"Take my breath away, aesthetically" - well, you are certainly getting there! It was really nice to see the interior again - it's come so far. The beaury of the satin varnish was really evident in several of the shots. Missing a few spots on the back of the handrail is totally understandable. The thing with satin finish is that it is gloss finish with flattening agents added. You're right - no stirring means the flattening agents stay at the bottom. I'm happy to see that the extra flattening agents in the second coat didn't dull it down too much. I'd be quite proud to achive the quality that you have (and I build furniture). So amazing to see everything lit up in the shed. Congratulations on your new living situation! And of course, the work on the exterior continues to be next level.
It makes me feel really happy to see Maya clearly feeling better about things. I love you guys. Edit: It just occurred to me that you're building a genuine, off-grid luxury tiny-house. Nice! Further edit: One that floats!
as a gofer I've always thought that you can learn most the important things about a stranger paired with you for 18 holes - they will show their good bad and ugly. seeing Maya varnish is a similar experience. We've seen it all from you and the best part is that you accept nothing but excellence. well done, well done.
Perfect timing! I'm at my boat today working on projects, and I just stopped for lunch and checked TH-cam. I was hoping your newest video would be ready to watch! Y'all inspire me to keep pushing on my boat projects.
The handrails are looking really beautiful, both the finish and the plugs. The music is part of what makes life worth living for you, Maya, and we love to hear you expressing yourself in this way. I know that the "oh beautiful sanding" is not your cup of tea, so keep doing the things you love!
I have worked large projects for many years. I came to appreciate the occasional serendipity that occurs. Accepting that there is oftentimes a great outcome I had not considered. Acceptance is the key.
I thought for sure that you had disturbed the karma for the project when you said, I'm going to be careful." Using a smaller brush would have made the back side of the handle a little easier. Congratulations on a great job!
As the daughter of a former marine paint manufacturing company director I was brought up to prep and when you think you've prepped prep again and stir and stir again.
Now I get it. You, Maya, are an artist and so you view this boat as a work of art! Makes total sense why you are gonna redo that ceiling. It will be gorgeous. Take frequent breaks to spare your neck.
Maya, just remember, you will always learn from your mistakes. This is part of the learning experience , bet you don't make that mistake again. Guys are famous for this. 😊
Your boat is looking SO good! We can share your varnish frustrations - when taking out two doors and laying them flat to varnish, the next morning we discovered hundreds of gnats had landed on the wet varnish and were stuck on their backs with their little legs wiggling; looked like someone had sprinkled black pepper everywhere!
Your progress reminds me of the song " I 'am getting closer to my home." Every long walk is made one step at a time! You guys know what you are doing, just a matter of keep on trucking! Before long, your biggest discission will be, do we pull up anchor now, or enjoy this Beautifull view a little longer.? Or think we should reef yet?😍👋🙏💪
No video I watch on building retrofitting-how be it a boat or a building-no one has a cleaner project. Many could learn this amazing skill makes a great working environment! Love the process and the varnishing of the ceiling will make the boat feel complete in the future. A good decision even if it feels like adding more it will be worth it. Hang in there almost done!
The aesthetics are always important. Could not agree with you more. It’s all about beauty in how it works, how it looks, how it moves and how it moves you.
Great job Maya on the varnishing and you brought a smile to me with your dancing along the way! Sorry for the setback, but great recovery and you will sit back and look at the beauty of the interior with admiration of your accomplishments! I'm so sorry for the loss of "Connie" and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and his family! He sounds like he was a very special person! Thak you for the video and updates! Can't wait for the next video!
Hey, you describe that it's not about the boat being perfect - contrary to what I agree with you, it's basically about the owner and user feeling comfortable in the boat. We each have our own vanity - my conclusion is that it must be our own conditions and security above all
this boat is a credit to both of you, you have gone well over the mark, apart from Leo and his team it's one of the best projects going. you can`t fault your workmanship.
In Dutch we have a word for brushes that have the bristles at an angle to the grip: "bokkepoot" (buckpaw - male-goat leg). You may not need them any longer, but the rear of the handrail is an example where I would have used them. They're in different sizes, flat, round and the flat bristle head can be lengthwise with a flat grip or 90 degrees. I might have used them in spaces around the cockpit too where you might need to lie down and paint the inner ceiling upside down. If ...
The boat as it stands now is very aesthetically pleasing. Your personal touches will make more yours. Just like an empty house can be beautiful and is personalized when decorating the interior.
A friend of mine that is a professional painter only uses tape when he sprays. He cuts in with a 3 1/2 angle brush when painting with a brush and roller. He holds the brush the opposite of the way you would think you would hold it. Where he intends to brush a straight edge he dabs the paint on first then start s cutting the edge picking up the paint along the way. Literally the opposite of what everyone else does. I remember just standing there watching in disbelief as it came out perfect in a quarter of the time. Same with rolling literally does it opposite of everyone else (the roller doesn’t come off the surface unless he is putting more paint on the roller . He rolls in long sweeping strokes overlapping a quarter every pass all the way to top to bottom overlapping left to right with unequal pressure to feather. Insane
Regarding stirring: Be it paint or orange juice - i always store upside down, or at least lying flat (for rectilinear boxes) so that, when I open the tub / carton etc, the denser solids are already at the top, I then stir them down into the liquid and you get a much better / easier mix.
The varnish oops has a silver lining. The handrails will have a more durable finish, which is important since the handrails will more than likely see more use. It all looks great. Excellent job.
The weather looks amazingly hot in Canada compared with the Northern hemisphere. Maya your varnishing skills are great, I am not brave enough to use a large paint brush yet. With luxury items I believe there needs to be a wow factor to elevate it above mass production. Your boat is very very special - it will be easy to sell your boat if you ever take the step to MC3. I watch another TH-cam other TH-cam channels where they are on there 3rd and 5th boats. RAN sailing are building their 3rd boat in Sweden living in a farm house and constructing their 50 foot boat in the barn. It is possible to buy -- two or three -- farm houses in Sweden vs UK house prices . . . So your next boat could be built in Sweden while you live next door in a farm house. You are both very well travelled. Delighted to hear you dad is rapidly recovering, looking forward to seeing him again. Enjoy the daily walks to your new living quarters.
Weirdly I commented on Alardino's magnificent paint stirring technique in the last video! I am sure your paint stirring is now fully up to Swiss standards, Maya, and not just Swiss by marriage! ;-)
Beautiful work. One suggestion for tricky varnish and paint jobs. Use a small brush, even an artists brush, to do the edges and odd places. A small brush is easier to control and conveys less varnish and is less likely to drip. A brush with a smaller width or just a tip is easier maneuver into awkward corners and angles. You can also dilute the varnish with the appropriate thinner and use a cotton rag to wipe it on. That should get into areas like the underside/nside of the handrails. Just remember to safely dispose of the rags after use. Also wonder if you could have applied most of the varnish to the handrails before installing them, then touch them up as needed.
Yes Maya. The music is wonderful. I used to be a musician myself and had the great good fortune to play in a band with a wonderful violinist.Your playing puts me very much in mind of her. I also have to say that the music that you choose to accompany the videos is very tasty. Some channels I follow I have to turn the sound off, just not my kind of music. So good on ya for that too.
I'm a few weeks behind, but I just want to say that I've watched every video you've published. I just want to say how much I appreciate the workmanship that has featured in both your boats. Well, no, ALSO including your very first live-aboard, Maya. Whether it's fretting over handrail finish or getting a funky engine to run properly with dad's help, it's all been a remarkable journey. I like making things and I respect the challenges you've faced. Additionally, I make visual novels (under a pen name) and do all my own art, music, sound design and foley. I REALLY appreciate the effort you put into the video production here.
Wow, the interior is Beautiful and it's not even finished! That move will save you guys a lot of time! Good to see you on film again Mia! Wouldn't mind if you layed a little music on us!😊❤
Great to see you showcase yourself and the work you’re doing in this video Mya, it’s awesome watching Aladino do his thing but inspiring to see you pull through the project as well
All varnish starts glossy but it’s the amount of flatting agent added that makes it satin or flat and that flatting agent always sinks to the bottom of the can! No need to stir high gloss varnish but essential to stir anything else! The result looks fabulous anyway.
Yes, definitely do the overhead whilst the boat is in the yard and you’re not living on board. It’s a horrible job but it will be better to get it done now.
A good way that I deal with setbacks is to take a deep breath and I like to start by asking myself "did anyone die or face grievous injury?", if not, things will get better. I love watching every week and I've closely followed the progress since you started the Magic Carpet 2 purchase and refit. Fair winds and following seas Connie!
Maya, if there’s one area you end up putting an extra coat of varnish on, what better place than the hand rails! Well worth it! Keep up the good work guys!!!
Very kind comments Maya. All of us, both patreons and subscribers are "vested" in your project! Things are really getting down to the detail work now on MCII! You are both cut of the same cloth when it comes to doing things the right way and the perfection in your work shows. Carry on! The water awaits!
If I can offer one tip, from someone who has been making mistakes for many many more years than the pair of you (quite a lot varnish related!). A good swearing session focussing on expletives that begin with the letter 'b' is very therapeutic. We brits have it down to a fine art, so if you need tips, let me know.
Maya, the varnish looks beautiful. Well done! I agree with you about aesthetic. Feeling good in the place we're living in is essential. I have no doubt that both Aladino and you will eventually make your boat look fantastic. It's your way of doing things up to the smallest details without giving up. 👍
You guys are amazing!! Way to stay true to your long term goal and vision! I’ve been following you guys since the beginning, it takes a massive amount of character and strength to hold true to the final vision. Mad respect.
Obviously Maya has graciously adapted Aladino’s practices to avoid sub-standard outcomes. You both have wonderful work ethics that you don’t see often and what I so appreciate. Your tenacity will definitely be worth it, and make your new home a safe and beautiful sailboat to spend every moment. The end is in site and so excited for you both.
I would like to make a comment about the hand rails. Yes it was a mistake we all make them. I think you are better off having the an extra coat because it will give you more grip and that is a high wear area. Also be glad your husband is using high quality materials they are easier to work with easier to clean and last better. You're doing a good job. Enjoy each day.
The handrails look lovely, and are proof of how Maya has transformed her understanding and ability to cope with this very tangible work. The reward of your carful varnishing is there for you to live with on board. The lights for the 'shed' are a wonderful addition, indeed I was wondering if Maya had sufficient light for varnishing, it seems so.
Wauw it looks so beautiful with the silky surface. It is really worth the effort. The boat will be such a beauty. Thanks for the music Maya . Its on my playliste 👏🏻
Your handrails look absolutely pristine. Perfection is the enemy of good, is my motto working boats, but each his own. Don't be so tough on yourself, mistakes will always happen.
Maya & Aladino, I think you could bottle your sweat and tears; suggested label: "One More Thing" (in your spare time of course!) For all you're going through, I'm really grateful bc I really need the inspiration and strategy for tenacity and sanity! "One more thing" I love you guys 😊
Have been thinking about the tiller opening in the transom bulwarks, and how it may prevent you for raising the tiller, for example when at anchor, and when you want to get it out of the way. Maybe worth considering having the tiller above the bulwarks and a split back stay foot. Just a thought… you know the deal having owned a Vindö 32. 😊 Thanks so much for sharing your story and creating great clips every week!! - Kris
Imagine the old days before blue and green tape. That hard light tan stuff that wouldn't peel off. Yikes. Interior defiantly looking better as you go. Grabrails turned out good.
Being a woodworker most my life, I can think of so many ways to attach your grab rails, but I would’ve finished it first and then attached it, and you never would’ve known. One of the possibilities could’ve been to drill through the wood put studs into the handrail and stuck the studs through the wood on the side of the boat and bolted it from the other side in the cubby. Used towels could’ve been another solution. If you want to use dowels and still be able to take it apart sometime without damaging stuff too much, you could’ve board a larger hole on the surface of the handrail that would’ve contacted the wood and then board second hole through the center of that that you could’ve use to plug with a bun even though you wouldn’t be putting a screw directly underneath it, then finish the hand grab rail and screw dowels or bolt towels where you wanted your hand grab rails to go and have those dowels the same size as the larger hole you have on those flat spots and glue and clamp in place till the glue sets up. Then, should the day ever come you want to take it apart drill out your bong and go in and get your screw or bolt out just as though it was going from the outside originally. Of course, seeing as how you knew you were gonna have to finish it after you put it on there was an easier way to have mask it off. You could’ve started by putting the masking tape onto the wood and then attach to your handrails, temporary early and then trimmed around them carefully with the razor blade pulled your handrail off and taken out your cut outs that would’ve been under the contact surface then reattach your handrail attach, insert bungs send him down, smooth and finish and then pull off your masking tape. I know I’ve absolutely no use to you now, but for future reference, should you ever do something like this again, you know, in like 10 years and you have totally forgot what I’ve said.😂❤
@@SailingMagicCarpet yes you did excellent work and yes you pick the way that works for you and I think the laughing face should’ve been pretty good indication that I know This was useless information but maybe in the future sometime or maybe not because like I said you’ll probably have forgot it by then🤣🤣😂🤣
It’s coming along great! I really appreciate all your efforts, and completely understand what y’all are going through. I have refitted a few small power boats, and am in the middle of making my own molds for hatches and lids. Once again, I also have been unsubscribed. I’m not sure why, but this is like the fourth time.
Annie Hill (from Voyaging on a Small Income) told me, when I suggested painting would be easier, that she found it much easier to get a good finish with vanish than with paint. Her self built boat "Fanshi" shows this off to great effect.... even the sink is wood with a bright finish. Personally, I'll take paint any day.... my Yf too. I'm too much of a wood butcher and need paint (and epoxy filler) to cover my mistakes... You guys can get away with bright work that looks great. (we do have some bright work...) Looks good.
Your boat is looking beautiful. Great work. My wife & I sailed the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland before I retired and I enjoyed boat maintenance as much as sailing, so I have enjoyed following Magic Carpet. Now I will be 84 next week and have taken up Classical Guitar (for the second time). So I always enjoy Maya playing the violin.
LOVE your music, Maya! I'm sorry that I forgot to say that last week. Really enjoy watching the progress you're both making on this boat. I think it will be spectacular when you're done.
It’s SO VERY important to be aware of what really matters to you, and to be able to press for those things even if they might not be in the strictest sense “necessary”; definitely do what feels right for you and make sure to meet your particular needs. This boat is going to be SO freaking gorgeous 😍😍😍 Also, I’d love a link to those shop lights if you can (affiliate, if possible, to support your project), l hope to be setting up a new shop in the medium-future and will need light💡
Continue making your home appeasing and pleasing for you and Aladino. And if someone doesn’t like, that has nothing to do with u both. Can’t wait to watch you both sailing once again. However I’ve enjoyed the rebuild videos, also keep up the great work! Great videos!

I have spent so many hours of my life sanding and refinishing varnished wood. You have my deepest condolences.
Please use a round brush. Much more control near edges.
Once again great progress- happy to see you dancing and smiling- seems Canada agrees with you…..and of course Fair winds to Connie!
If ...
I have seen those brushes and wondered why they exist, now that is a great reason.
The boat as it stands now is very aesthetically pleasing. Your personal touches will make more yours. Just like an empty house can be beautiful and is personalized when decorating the interior.
When I see work on the hull i begin to think sea days are coming closer. Well done on all your endeavours.
Insane
Regarding stirring:
Be it paint or orange juice - i always store upside down, or at least lying flat (for rectilinear boxes) so that, when I open the tub / carton etc, the denser solids are already at the top, I then stir them down into the liquid and you get a much better / easier mix.
It is beginning to look more and more like your home every episode! Keep it going!
The varnish oops has a silver lining. The handrails will have a more durable finish, which is important since the handrails will more than likely see more use. It all looks great. Excellent job.
I would call the boat Epifanes. 😊
Great video!
Beautiful Words about Conny 😢
Removing the tape before the paint dries hard makes for an easy release!
Don't be too hard on yourself, you did well! As usual.
The end is in site and so excited for you both.
those hand rails now pop! it looks great.
Sheer strake. You are both making a great job of this fit-out and it's good to follow along with this project!! Well done to both of you.
Hi Maya, I’m male and I understand your need for aesthetics. Aesthetics can really help with mood and can provide a sense of satisfaction.
The boat is really looking amazing! Godspeed Connie, fair winds and following seas.
I have that exact light set in my garage. They're great!
So true - extra effort in retrospect - is always appreciated. Over and over. And over!
After the fact, maybe use a mirror and an elbow-angled brush for the inside of the handrail which finally turned out beautifully.
- Kris
That is a beautiful song, I love Jazz violin, so it is very appealing.
Beautiful job on the rails! Love the new lights! Yay for being closer to painting.
Imagine the old days before blue and green tape. That hard light tan stuff that wouldn't peel off. Yikes. Interior defiantly looking better as you go. Grabrails turned out good.
Maya - Shipwright! who woulda thought bravo!
Wow the boat is already starting to look very sharp . Massive effort from both of you 👍
Being a woodworker most my life, I can think of so many ways to attach your grab rails, but I would’ve finished it first and then attached it, and you never would’ve known. I know I’ve absolutely no use to you now, but for future reference, should you ever do something like this again, you know, in like 10 years and you have totally forgot what I’ve said.😂❤
There are many ways to achieve this result. I chose a way that worked for me and I got an excellent result. I’m happy with the work I did here.
@@SailingMagicCarpet yes you did excellent work and yes you pick the way that works for you and I think the laughing face should’ve been pretty good indication that I know This was useless information but maybe in the future sometime or maybe not because like I said you’ll probably have forgot it by then🤣🤣😂🤣
To Connie, May your journey on the forever crystal blue seas be amazing. Sail on ⛵️
The violin sound as well as the bout inside ..., both line up the pentagram really excellent... wow
It’s coming along great! I really appreciate all your efforts, and completely understand what y’all are going through. I have refitted a few small power boats, and am in the middle of making my own molds for hatches and lids.
Once again, I also have been unsubscribed. I’m not sure why, but this is like the fourth time.
Wow, the interior is looking fantastic. Starting to look like a dream boat, your dream for sure! 😊🐬
The handrails look beautiful. Nice work.
Maya, it is SO NICE to see you smiling again. Both of you are doing a beautiful job, hang in there you should be sailing soon.
LOVE your music, Maya! I'm sorry that I forgot to say that last week. Really enjoy watching the progress you're both making on this boat. I think it will be spectacular when you're done.
Thank you so much for the kind comment! :)
The boat is looking good to launch already!
Looks like Maya got her groove back!
Yes! More music and beautiful work, maya!
