You're very lucky. Here in Hawaii, if a car's registration isn't paid and the license plates are still on It, back-registration and fees accumulate. At one time there was a cut-off date of X-amount of years, and all the fees would be wiped from the system. Now that the state/city upgraded the system, the back-registration and fees can go back endlessly. Some of the classics I've come across have plates and tags from the 70's. That's thousands of dollars in back-fees just to bring it current. And then....you can put money into it to fix/restore. These cars are basically parts/scrap cars if you try to do it the right way.

That is an unreasonable system! How can something sitting unused accrue fees?

You're absolutely correct about the crossover from paper to electronic fileing by our dumb asses in charge. My police records no longer exist! 🙂🙂🙂
In Nebraska if you have vehicle sitting around for any length of time and have not plated or paid your property taxes, and you want to start registration again, go to Department of Motor Vehicles and get a storage certificate, fill it out and have it notarized.
Then you can take that along with old registration papers to get you plates. You may have to pay for some back property taxes, but no back registration fees. Not positive but current value for any vehicle built in the 60's is around $25.00 per year.
We also inherited my mother in laws car from her estate in Minnesota. Tried to get the title in to our name in Nebraska. Nebraska wanted to charge us sales tax on the current value of the vehicle. BS. We had the title put into our name in Minnesota, went to Nebraska DMV, got the title transferred from Minnesota to Nebraska, for $50.00. SAVED HUNDREDS IN SALES TAX!
Government IDIOTS are really intelligent about NOT MUCH!
Glad you got the paper right. March on to the finish line you all! Nice video.

Thanks for the info! It seems like everywhere they are trying to get our hard earned money one way or another. Glad you were able to save some of yours! A win for the good guys!

Sounds like a BC thing (ICBC) just a nightmare. A condensed good story, I bought a 1978 GMC crewcab 4x4 around 1997 (in BC) went to register it it my name the lady doing the paperwork noticed the Vin was off by one digit so full stop cant process it, the truck still had its sticker on the tailgate where it sold new in 78 in Alberta so on a chance we phoned and we actually got the original salesman who sold it in 78 and he even remembered the truck, a few minutes later he faxed a copy of the original sales docs from 78 and cleared things up, after 20 years he was still there and so helpful.

That's incredible! And lucky! My folks moved to BC from Ontario and my Dad said you haven't seen screwed up until your dealing with ICBC. Thanks for the story.

In Texas we have to do a vin inspection with the local police theft unit. All those numbers matching on the car would pass you here. The police would sign off on the vin verification to reinstate the vin to active status. My car had been off the road and not registered since 1971.

Few years ago here in Arizona, I went to get tags for my 93 Chevy truck that I’ve owned for over 25 years. Hand them the paperwork that was mailed to me from the DMV along with the emissions certificate. They can’t find my truck! 1-1/2 hours later, they’re only solution was to fill out a form selling my truck to myself, and then issuing me a new title. Needless to say, I wasn’t amused!
