If there is enough space in the nesting area for two birds most pairs will sleep together, I have had a few birds that from time to time do not sleep together, if they are not they may not be bonded or something could be scaring one of the birds off at night like a rat or snake so one of the birds looks for a safer place to sleep, hope this helps answer your question. Tommy
your the first person ive run across who show a good looking pigeon farm. how do you think free range pigeon farm would work out. like if you mix the breeds to make a pigeon that flies well but not great or far ? also how much do your pigeons eat per day??
Answer to The Fish , adult birds is can not fit thru the chain link , what you can not see is that on the outside of the fence the wire is covered in 1 inch chicken wire , unfortunately if you look through the wire in the background you'll see trees , that is a cypress head and swamp , yellow rat snakes come into the loft almost every night and kill birds and eat young , the adult birds are to big for the snakes to eat so they kill them and leave them lay , I had to abandoned that loft completely , never use wire larger than 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch if you're in a snake area , hope this helps you and saves you some heartache .
Most all pigeon breeds will free fly around on the outside of your loft there is no need to mix the breeds , mixed breeds are calls rats and usually give pigeons a bad name, free flying birds can bring problems such as hawks, cats , angry neighbors if birds land on their roofs and ect. there are several hundred different types of pigeons contact a local club to talk with someone, pigeon should be fed as much as they will clean up in 20 minutes and no more, never leave feed out it attracts mice.
Squabs should be killed at about 28 days old or as soon as the feathers are all out under the wings , so from about 27 to 30 days old , a day or two in young pigeons makes a big difference as they grow very fast every day.
+Tommy Taylor do you still raise these?I raise grizzle utility kings, and wouldn't mind having another line. Not many people raise utility kings anymore,I don't know of anyone else with grizzles.let me know if you do have any available and how to get in touch, thanks
Utility Kings are about 1 and 1/2 times larger than homers , they have what is called a bull eye which is a dark colored eye , homer eye's look completely different , Kings can only fly in the loft or for a short distance around the loft and will not come home like the homers , Kings are raised as a meat and show bird . Hope this helps answer your question . Tommy
Taste like pigeon . lol Something like quail , some raise them as a hobby , some raise them for food , when we have extras we sell them to people who want to raise them never for food because they are worth more as breeders than to eat . When raising pigeons to eat , they should be killed at 28 days old , as soon as all the pin feathers are out . Try some at a upscale restaurant , usually French restaurants carry it , if you don't want it served to you with the head still on ask them to take the head off before they serve it to you , usually runs about $25 for a meal .
That's so interesting that yours sell more for breeding as opposed to eating. But then again, pigeons are pretty darn cute. How much are you selling them for? I wouldn't want a breeder, just a pet.
email me at tpalatka@aol.com presently I have no birds for sale , when birds are available the price will go up because of the price of feed . Thank you for your interest in our birds,
