    Hi,all experts.I took part in building this ship in the 80s in Wewlsfleth (Germany) and I tell you this is a well- buildt ,strong ship.

      Jannik Jana Cool! Not only strong, it looks pretty good too, like the design!:) Im sure it's Well built but seems like they have little ballast, it would need more draft to be steady in these conditions

      I sailed on this ship and it certainly was built in Japan, not germany. When the prop comes out the water it blacks out on the shaft due to engine tripping from overspeed. Not a strong ship at all. Was sold back in 2015(IIRC) from Arklow shipping.

    I sailed a few trips with Arklow as chief engineer, River, Moor, Venture etc.
    Normally with Arklow you are pumping ballast in at the same time as cargo is being discharged but at La Coruna when a gale is blowing directly in on the harbour you have to sail light as the draught plus the swell means you could scrape the bottom.

      is there a connection between the weight of the cargo/ballast and the ships dwt?

    • @dbeierl
      @dbeierl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Deadweight tonnage is the ship's weight-carrying capacity.

    • @michaelsrowland
      @michaelsrowland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi, so the dwt is not the weight of the cargo it can carry, some of the dwt will include the weight of ships stores fuel food for the journey?

      Number of tons of 2240 lb that a vessel will lift when loaded in salt water to her summer freeboard marks. Includes "crew and effects; passengers and luggage; provisions and stores; fresh water in storage tanks, service tanks, and piping; furniture, bedding, napery, cooking utensils and apparatus, crockery, plate, and cutlery; mails and specie; parcels; cargo; coal in bunkers and on fire grates; oil fuel in tanks and piping; salt water ballasst; spare gear; bilge water; and ashes. -- International Marine Dictionary, de Kerchove, 1948

    Grossly inadequate ballast for the sea conditions. A ship with that construction experiences enormous stresses when thrust out of the water with lite ballast. It would have been much safer to run deeper in the water not only for better steering/power/control, but for reduced stress on the ship's structure. These types of conditions have been known to break ships in half.

    this ship is in ballast to go to a different port to load a cargo, how far does a ship usually travel in ballast to load a cargo before it becomes uneconomic?

  • @ninja2kernow

    When the propeller comes out the water our ship used to shake ,when you got no cargo in it,s horrible.and at sea, we used to run a generator from the propeller shaft.and when the propeller came out the water the lights would get realy bright, then as the propeller went back in the water, the force would slow the engine for a second,and the lights would go really dim, she was built in the 60s. and when it was to bad ,we would start a normal generator. good times ,I miss them. More please..

      Critical speed and dangerous overspeed are two different things. The critical speed which to avoid because of vibrations is normally within the achievable revolution ranges of the engine, often in the 60-70% range and the engineers have to quickly go through this range when increasing revolutions. The max speed is established and is guarded with alarms and eventually cut-off. That said, if the prop is out of the water, the rev will increase uncontrollably, but in all likelihood will go through the dangerous range quickly, like under normal circumstances. The only danger is real overspeed, but is unlikely to manifest itself as the prop will be back in the water; still under these circumstances it would be wise to reduce speed.

    La Caruna is located where the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic meet. The surf wlil have to be seen to be believed. ALL ships pitch there and there is no good way to ballast for it. Witness the (fully laden) QE 2 which already pitches while still between the piers of the outer harbor. That is also why La Caruna is one of the favorite spots for surfers. Look at other videos of La Caruna. Heavy pitching there is a fact of life for all kinds of ships, from super takers to tug boats.

    • @thomastrachsel3215
      @thomastrachsel3215 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The governor must respond fast enough, otherwise the main engine would go into overspeed quick. Overspeeding a slow-speed engine leads to a quick shut-down or even self-destruction. Moments like the filmed ones can not be simulated, so it is such situations that prove if the governor and the overspeed shutdown were adjusted properly.

    depending on environmental laws. that ship my have been forbidden to take on bales while in port. what ever water is in the blast tanks could escape as well and then you contaminate the local water with water from someplace else. Ballasting in ports has caused many new species to invade many ports and fresh water. the grate lake have a shellfish from Asia now they can't control. The captain of the ship is not stupid even though captains do stupid things sometimes. he has his Masters cert or he would not be in the seat.

      Ship´s holds was empty. A compartment within a boat, ship, submarine, or other floating structure that holds water is called a ballast tank. Water should move in and out from the ballast tank to balance the ship. In a vessel that travels on the water, the ballast will remain below the water level, to counteract the effects of weight above the water level. Provide stability to the ship.

      Obviously the Captain of this ship doesn't know. Wow. You can tell the ship is empty. And you tell it has little to no ballast as well. Amazing.
