  • In this video, Pat covers the subtle details of how he ropes hind feet. And we follow the progress of Chinaco who, one day, will be a fine bridle horse! Our plan is to follow his progress all the way from the foundation we're laying now to when Pat is riding him straight up in a spade bit and roping cattle. So pay attention and enjoy the journey. I've spent a few days on this "keep working till your horse figures it out and there is no fight or flight left in him". Boy does that make a difference ! Whatever time you spend on that, it will pay dividents cuz you don't seem to have to go back to that exercise once he realy got it that way so far. Thanks Pat.

    "How do I know? Because I know." Best line on the internet today. Thanks for this. Many many more thumbs up from Idaho Falls, Idaho. Perhaps it was in a video I missed but could you say a word or two more about, "If you have a hold of the right foot and the horse is looking at you out of the left eye, that is NOT GOOD." ?

      James Drake. Right hoof/ right eye. Common horse-sense.

      Because the horse is not giving that side of his body. It means he is still holding on to a brace in that leg. And it’s part of his defense mechanism as a prey animal. You need to take care of all of those things to make a gentle horse.

    A simple exercise with big impact in the mind of the horse, but also in the mind of the trainer. Patience without abuse or drama. You made my day! Thanks, Pat, your skills and presentation are a blessing to us horsemen.

      BarbedStar. Shouldn't hold it against a horse for using opposite eye to hoof lift. Only 'panning' his rear end area. Left to right. Nothing wrong with that.

    I just told my farrier yesterday I was not going to present my new pony to him as it was fiddly with its legs and I need to work on it every day for a few weeks until I think he is ready for someone else to trim. I will just work away at rasping them a bit each day so they do not get overly long and teach him at the same time to stand quietly.
    Pat, how would you attempt this if you did not have a riding horse handy?

      Pat roped horses from the ground for many years. It’s just harder on your body but it’s still feasible to do if you keep an eye on the angle you need to be at and keep in mind that your rope is longer than the total diameter of your roundpen. So you can always go to the middle.

    Thank you Pat. I done this with loose horses afoot and ahorseback. I have never tried it with the horse haltered and tied.

      The reason we tied Chinaco is because Pat was having a bad roping day and it turned into a game for the colt. He kept catching two feet and couldn’t fish it down to one foot. Another time to do this is if you have a horse that is running around crazy and has a lot of fear. After the colt has been introduced to the rope on the HIND foot while tied, you turn him loose and rope him again. It should go without saying (but I need to clarify for the masses) that we would never rope a front foot with the horse tied because it would teach him to pull back. When roping a hind foot, you’re behind the eye so it doesn’t drive him back. Also, as Pat mentioned in the video, this colt has been roped around the neck many times and has stood for many hours tied so he understands where the end of the rope is. Thank you for commenting.

    I didn't hear this was an attempted lesson meant to make horse vitally farrier-friendly particularly. Hopefully. Until 3 minutes in. When is he going to train with patient hand down the rump? Horse usually obliges graciously & lifts hoof. Because, not dumb at all. Know it's 'hoof-time'. Clean or shoe or whatever .

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This colt already lifts his feet for cleaning and trimming. This exercise, while related to shoeing, goes much deeper than that.

      @@PatnDebPuckett I have done a similar thing with a horse that was very aggressive and vicious with the hind feet. The horse not reacting out of fear, so much as purposely coming to get you. Sometimes a horse requires a different than typical approach. Thanks for so many good videos.

    Can I do this from the ground but in the presence of a gentle horse? Is it important to be on horseback?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pat roped all horses solely from the ground for many years. Roping from a horse just gives him the opportunity to work two horses at a time and takes some of the pressure off of his body. If you aren’t a proficient roper, you should start off on the ground.

    Just my own rule if you got put your spur in the flank you just as well put the bit under the tail ! Take the time it takes or pay the price !!!

      When teaching a horse to yield the hindquarters, we do whatever it takes to help the horse understand. Each horse is different. This short demo was a result of a question from a person who is having problems teaching his horse to turn on the forehand.
