The loss of Josh Kennedy has not been touched upon. The guy single-handedly kept them in games for years and won them games. Absolute superstar. That is in addition to the lack of sustained effort by the current crop of players.
Eagles fan here. Very well said Gary. I’m embarrassed by the footy we’re playing at the moment. We don’t play with any aggression or urgency. It seems like our players don’t care about winning. We’ve always been a great club with a great reputation which is being ruined right now and it’s deeply saddening. West coast needs a huge wake up call and need to pull their heads in because the way they’re playing now is extremely hard to watch.
Eagles fan here. Agree with everything Gary says. Enough is enough. The list is not a 2 game win a season team. We should’ve won on the weekend. It’s a rebuild for sure though so we’re in a predicament right now. Plenty of raw, young talent who obviously need more game time and experience and yes, lacklustre seniors as Gary pointed out. One gaping hole is our Ruck stocks. An injured Nic Nat who is barely available and then who? Williams?? Please. He’s a WAFL player at best. A lot of work to do this season to earn back some respect. Having said that, we have the most members of any AFL club and a loyal supporter base and we’re not going anywhere. West Coast for life.
Adam Simpson was never heavily scrutinised enough last season for the Eagles' ongoing poor performances. He was never held accountable. He needs to be held accountable, because it is apparently evident that he has lost his players. How else could a list of players with such talented names on it perform so poorly so regularly? Simpson has been coaching that club for 9 seasons, but has done nothing since the 2018 premiership. He's the problem, and he must be gotten rid of.
Too many players have been given free rides. And maybe the coach as well. Look at how often Simpson has mentioned 'effort' in a press conference over the last few years. This is a professional sporting club we are talking about. It's bewildering.

The fade outs have been common place before & after the 2018GF, and obviously these issues have accelerated over more recent years. The fadeouts cost us through the better years under Simpson, cost us quite a few top four spots. Tigers got 3 flags, Entitled Eagles got 1......and the reason why is all " attitude, intent, work ethic". Simpson has never held senior players to account by dropping them, EVER. Because of Simpson's inability to hold senior highly paid players to account our culture has deteriorated. We are not a competitive, hungry Football Team, we are an entitled bunch of individuals who pick & choose when to try. Nothing will change until the problems are cut out. I'm a lifelong West Coast supporter and we never die. 2001 was a horrible season. 2005 we were in a Grand Final. 2006 we won the flag. 2010 was a horrible season. 2011 we were in a prelim. 2015 it was a Grand Final. 2018 we won the flag. We historically put together premiership lists and then deliver premierships, after which we fall away. My club is in a time now that makes them hard to watch. Lyon is right as it stands today. The criticism is very fair, and I think it will help the players, some of them anyway, to find something. I think they'll get better as the season progresses.
I’ve been highly critical of the Eagles during the last 4 years but I think Garry Lyon’s comments regarding West Coast’s round one performance for 2023 is way off. The media have been highly praising of North Melbourne’s start to the season under Alastair Clarkson, especially with the away win over Fremantle. Yet, somehow, the Eagles, who only lost to Clarkson’s men by 5 points IN MELBOURNE are seen to have played terribly. They point to the poor 2nd quarter without mentioned the comeback in the second half that almost stole the game. If North have been so “amazing”, then credit should be given to the Eagles for pushing them all the way in Victoria. Maybe West Coast’s win over the Giants in round 2 will give them a bit of respect from the biased Melbourne mob. But we’ll see.
Three debutants on the road in round one is a clear message of development. And guess what? Next week they're likely to debut another as Elijah Hewett had a good enough game in the WAFL to be considered for selection Almost every team will belly out and these couple of seasons are the Eagles turn. We can get flogged all year but if there's progress and development that's as exciting as a finals berth. Our wins go beyond the scoreboard in these years. Seeing young guys improve is a delight for objective fans and that goes for watching opposition players as well. Daniel Kerr came into the league playing on a team getting thumped every week, premiership player and nearly scored brownlows and we knew it watching him when we were getting schooled. Our year is about uncovering the next generation of champion footballers and if by surprise we make a few guys like Garry Lyon eat his words when his team is on the way down and we spring board up it will a bitter pill for him to swallow. Do the maths as it will be 3 years before the Eagles are top 8 competive to take out some of the old guard ie Melbourne. Bad timing to punch down as when we come up an aging premiership team will a tasty tune up when time comes. Don't worry Garry we won't hold it against the D's. A lot of us felt a sense of relief you guys got a premiership for your supporters. Every team gets a chance at developing for a year or 2. Some teams like the Demons got 2 decades before they sorted themselves out and it was great to see the Melbourne faithful celebtate that. Have fun while it lasts but try and be humble. Outwardly displaying a bias against teams is a stain on a great sport. Anyone would have thought Dennis Cometti was an Eagles fan. Wrong. He was a Doggies supporter and he was professional enough to keep that largely unknown.
Showing respect for your premiership heroes and allowing them to influence the culture in a positive way after their best footy is behind them has not hurt the club so far. Matera and Jakovich weren't at their best when they retired. They showed the way for Cousins, Cox and Glass. Embley, Kerr, and Lynch were past their best when they retired or left. Shuey, Gaff, and Kennedy became club heroes. Shuey, Hurn, Darling, Gaff, Naitanui are going to show our next premiership players what it looks like.

The gap between our best and worst footy has always been enormous under him, which for me is not a good sign of a decent coach. Have a look at Junior Rioli wanting out and not only that he’s clearly in a better space because he hasn’t played like that since 2018. The stories of the board trying to pick the team are deafening … it’s actually embarrassing when you think about it. Stick to wheeling and dealing to bring more money into the club and let the coaches and the players do what they do. Bunch of flogs
