Oceanus Procellarum: Music & Lith Prints

  • A glimpse into my dark room process.
For those unfamiliar, "lith prints" are black and white photo prints that use a special developer. Not sure about the name; this has nothing to do either lithography or lithium...it's just the name of the process.
If you've seen my other videos, many of the photos I use in them are made this way, in addition to standard black and white as well as digital images.
Parts of this video were difficult to shoot, since it's called a "dark room" for a reason, and the amber safelight is not great for video, but it's a fun project.
    Gear used for music:
    Arturia Microbrute
    Moog Mother 32 (x2)
    Korg Volca Beats
    Electric guitar with delay effect

I love Lith printing but still can’t get the look I’m envisioning...punchy and very grainy... i had been using Ilford multi grade RC paper...I’ll try Arista Edu paper...and, yes, I’ll need to keep experimenting... BTW, your Lith prints in this video is very inspiring! thanks for sharing! Oh, and terrific music! best, James

Appreciate the comments! I have never found Ilford to be lithable at all, fine paper for normal black and white developer but not the right chemistry for lith. The photos in this vid are made using either Arista EDU, which gives the high contrast, super grainy look, or Fomatone MG Classic, which gives the dreamier, more colorful look seen in some of the photos in the last part of the video, in particular the very last photo of the radio telescope. I've also used Oriental, but not lately, and years ago my favorite was Kentmere Kentona but they discontinued that one. I think they had a fire in their factory in Eastern Europe or something.

Beautiful images, and really great guide, thanks for sharing this. I've got myself some old film cameras this year, but still not got around to even finishing a roll, so this is very inspirational.

Beautiful!! Please, if you still lith print, make more videos...

Thanks! Yes, I certainly still make lith prints and have no plans to stop. Between photography, recording music, and my day job, though, it's tough to make videos, especially in the dark room where the lighting is poor and I'm busy printing. Maybe I need to make friends with someone who likes making music videos so I can focus on the music and photos.
I plan to make more in the meantime, it just takes time. Glad you enjoy it.

@@RCAvhstape sure, I got you. Am I right to think your negative holder is homemade so you have that extra room around to burn borders? I'm also curious about chemicals temperature, how you "calculate" timings at the different stages.. etc.. thanks for being responsive, open, and talented! Cheers

@@mathieumorel448 The negative holder is not homemade, but it was filed out to show the borders, which I control with the blades of the easel.

@@mathieumorel448 As for temperature, I don't worry about it as much as I probably should. 68F/20C is normal room temperature and that's usually fine. With this process, you pull the print from the developer when it looks like it's done, not according to a rigid clock. It's very much a hands-on thing.

@@mathieumorel448 BTW I recently returned from a trip where I shot lots of photos, so I will be processing the film for a while, and hopefully in the next few weeks I will have lots of new material for lith printing, some of which will likely appear in future videos.
