  • This is the start of my first N Gauge model layout in the shed. I've settled on an idea for a layout and am starting to translate that onto a revamped baseboard in the shed.
    I've used Rail Modeller Pro for the Mac to help me refine the layout design www.railmodelle...

    Hi Charlie just found and subscribed to your channel just watched your first update and as I’m starting to model my first n gauge layout and I’m also using 50mm foam board it grabbed my attention so looking forward to ploughing through your update videos

    Nice layout

    Making good progress there, love planning layouts but I usually get carried away and realise I can't fit it all in. Looks like the pro version of railmodeller is a bit more user friendly than the classic version I use, wonder if pro loads the classic files? Woodland scenics do a foam incline thingy but not sure if it's any good.

      @CharliesShed  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simons Shed Yep, I wanted to keep it fairly simple but with room for lots of detail. It may yet prove too much in the space I have but only track laying will tell me that. I'm sure it will take the classic files as it's just an upgraded version, drop them a tweet to check before investing! The scenics thing works with a flat surface so might be good for the inner loop, I'll check it out, cheers, Charlie.

      @@CharliesShed hello! I love the idea of fitting so much into a small space! I’ve just started my channel a few months ago, although the track plan has changed a bit, I’m now hoping to do something a bit like this plan! I love it and do you know when about you’ll be continuing on with your n gauge adventure? Bye, Millie😊

    I've got alot of peco and atlas code 80 track that has never had a train on it or electric. Had a dream layout and moved.....enough said....so it's all brand new bridges switches cross overs pieces.....u name it...and 4 track pack sets..2 atlas and 2 peco...

    Looks great. You are correct to skip the points on the short side of the layout. I prefer to keep all my points where I can reach them, being too cheap to buy motors for the points. You don't even have to join the double main line to the loopy line if you choose not to. You will end up most likely running your long passenger and freight trains on the double main line, and use the loopy line for your small freight trains and locos. I would skip both points at the station as well with the loopy line, maybe on point at one end of the station, just to have a connection for the shunter locos to the main line. I fear having the loopy line connect at the station platform to continue its loop will end up being blocked by a passenger train. Well, that is what I would do.

    You've the makings of a great shed and layout. Don't rush to build though...plans on paper can be fiddly and time consuming but it's that "inconvenience" that can save you annoyance and expense...oh.. please stop moving the camera about so much. its making me ill. other than that keep it up mate.. look forward to viewing the progress. sub and like from me 😎

    Hi Charlie ,,,, looks like a great track design ,,, I can see why you have gone with it ,,, not sure whether you intend to fix the celotex sheets together ,,, but I think you may need to have some kind of mechanical fixing to keep them from moving in relation to each other,,,,, just a 6 inch strip of thin ply down the joints and stuck with some no nails,,,, otherwise you could end up with the track acting as a mechanical fixing between sheets,,,,,, as for smoothing out the incline,,,, the only thing I can think of is that your going to have to cut three and a half ???? 4 inch strip the shape of the track,,,, and have it in as bigger section as possible,,, you may be able to join pieces together but each join would risk a kink ???? or poor transition ,,,,, I had only one such transition just at the start of my incline ,,,, and coaches would uncouple so it is important that you get it as gradual as possible without any sudden changes in incline ,,,,, Cutting a big snake like strip out of a full sheet of thin ply may seem very wasteful ,,,, but having trains uncouple every time around is really maddening ,,,, (any mastic type adhesive will support the ply in the trench you have cut in the celotex ,,,, You may need to take one track down ,,, while one goes up,,,, ???? because your incline dosn't want to be too steep,,,,, about 2% is about the maximum in this video you can see some wheel slip th-cam.com/video/nlzhlncuLDM/w-d-xo.html and the incline is just rising 2 mm every 100 mm forward ,,,,, if you can get a smooth gradient you should be getting rid of any future problems,,,, on what should be a smashing design ,,,, great update nicely presented ,,,,, Cheers ,,,,, Alan

      ***** Thanks for the suggestions Alan, plenty to think about and yes I will need to bond the 3.5 sheets together as I'll get in trouble with the track near the joins as you say. I think a long strip of something as a track bed is the way to go for a smooth incline. Cheers, Charlie.

    Hi Charlie, I like the plan and I enjoy seeing your progression. Instead of raising one set of track you could always raise one and lower the other. Keep up the good work.

    Nice plans and a great use of space, David has already mentioned the difference about US and UK N Scale, look forward to seeing it progress.

    • @RingoSimpkinsUK
      @RingoSimpkinsUK 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheDiomedef16 It's still 9mm between the rails, the difference is the "modelling scale" so a 1:148 and 1:160 prototype will look different sizes, but it wont effect the trackbed dimensions etc as far as i know .. they are the same

    • @pbeccas
      @pbeccas 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, the track is the same because I'm the olden days when I had a layout I used a mixture of peco and atlas track together.

    • @CharliesShed
      @CharliesShed  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheDiomedef16 Thank you kind sir. Pretty sure it's the same and I can't change that on the software but when I lay the Peco set track on the diagram it fits a treat!

      @CharliesShed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, it's a bit of a fiddle learning the software and for a small layout probably just more fun to get stuck in and buy some track! I'll have to see what I can come up with this year ;) Thanks for watching!

    Top work, Railmodeller is a top bit of software, Jan is really helpful. As for your "dug out bit", try 1.5mm or 2mm hardboard, you can cut it with strong scissors to shape, once you have the shape you can use coffee stirrers underneath to increase it's rigidity then use small blocks to support it at different heights, you get a good smooth surface to lay track on and no sticky wet mess as you would with filler and so on. seal it with pva though. Looking good, you going to be using point motors and stuff? Whats the plan for fixing to the insulation boards?

    • @CharliesShed
      @CharliesShed  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Great advice, thank you, I think hardboard or similar is the way to go for a gentle gradient. It did occur to me this weekend that point motors might be tricky in a foam board but I've seen some that sit beside the points but I'll have to investigate further. I was going to stick underlay/cork to the board and glue the track onto that. Cheers, Charlie.

    My thought on how to make that gradient - maybe cut out the trackbed pieces completely, then glue them back in, at a new height.

    Hi Charlie, like the video, what a good idea using foam sheets as the baseboard, I have to say though that it will need to be well braced underneath, as it can still warp when glue, paint etc is applied to one side even if it's 50 mm thick, I have tried using it for wargaming terrain and without suitable bracing over time it warped about 5 mm over it's 1200mm length, not sure what your baseboard size is, not all of them do this either so just make sure yours is well fixed down. Also I think Alan Plumb's idea is best for the track bed, if it was me I'd use 3mm mdf or hardboard cut to the shape of your track plan then glue this in the trench with something like "no nails" as you can squidge it down to get the levels right, also by using this you will have something to fix any point motors etc to. I look forward to watching your progress. Happy modelling.
