Nepal, a country that beats many others in the number of available outdoor adventures, not to forget the picturesque landscapes and diverse culture, has yet another delightful thing to boast about - its fishing destinations. Trekking and climbing are not the only attractions to pull you in as, when you come equipped with the right fishing gear, some of the best alpine fishing can be found right here in the Himalayas. Among all the fantastic Himalayan rivers - Prithvi, Marsyangdi, Sunkoshi, Marshyangdi - the Seti quietly slips through the Pokhara Valley in the shadows of the Annapurnas. This river is an extremely busy little section of water and it is the only place in Nepal with big fish in close proximity to a major trekking route and the adventure sports of Pokhara.
On the first trip, we were asked by our agency to help a group of Japanese trekkers in their attempt to go after some fish that the Assistant Indian Ambassador had allegedly seen from an Annapurna viewpoint above the scenic Phew Tal. The river's happy population were a motley assortment of carp and catfish that had obviously found their way into the river from agricultural ponds up-valley, many of which you pass on the initial trek out of Pokhara and around Sarangkot.
The Seti is a small roadside river that fishes well only in the prime period from October to the end of December for above Hurundhara Bridge or the last lodge below the confluence with the Mardi Khola and is a difficult destination during the normally prime season months of September to November as the prime floods of the western monsoon discourage angler uptake. Then the river is affected by the Ghachok and Ghar rivers. The rest of the year has lots of water issues due to a local hydro-electric power station which takes a lot of water out of the river. Any fish that are to be caught during this period are likely to be Sidway Catfish or the Omnidirectional brown Trout of varying sizes that have been recently released into the system. To attract this brown trout, the Seti must be fished with spinners fished in the natural bait fashion. This river bank is such an attractive piece of heart,
the kind that falls away from the deepest soul.
