I listen to modern pros and I wonder how they would have made a living even ten years ago without all the bells and whistles modern mirrorless cameras have in-body to spoil them. The way they talk it's as if no decent images were ever produced before 2018. The 5d mark iii was a top quality pro camera that kept many pro users enjoying fine wine and cigars as a result of it's amazing quality images. You don't need a gazillion focus points to produce iconic images.

Pros value higher hit rates in challenging conditions. It's why modern mirrorless are the real deal and now the go to choice. You're right though, it doesn't mean that you can't get stunning images in challenging conditions with something like the 5Dmkiii. Your hit rate will be lower no matter how skilled you are though.

agreed, as former film shooter, I learned composition and exposure. I can shoot on most any body now and find my shot. I've got mirrorless too, love the R line, but I still go back to the 5D for many reasons. To each his own, but I personally know many working photogs that see no point to drop all that coin to get out of something that continues to be bread and butter consistently(including concert/venue shooters). They'll all tell you the same thing....GLASS GLASS GLASS. :) Cheers.

Sorry, disagree with the title. Canon 5DIII is Not a beginners camera. Professionals used it round the globe for paid work. Many of them are still using it. It requires quite a bit of understanding of photography for extracting the optimum performance of this great camera.

It is also not a professional camera in 2023 by technical terms. Hence why learning on a full frame could be very rewarding for a beginner. Why have a beginner drop 500-600 dollars on a rebel and get OK results when they can practically spend the same amount of money on an out of date full frame? Building confidence in your shots is very important and this camera could help beginners with that

    I'm not a professional, but:
    - The battery life is phenomenal
    - Low light is amazing in my experience
    - Canon colors matter because I hate editing, and resent the idea that I need an indefinite Lightroom subscription to enjoy my craft
    - Tough body, unparalleled ergonomics, intuitive dials, meaty grip
    - DSLRs are not trendy, so you get a lot for your money
    - Viewfinder won't lag, skip, or consume power since it's not electronic
    - Dual card slots (CF / SD)
    - Good enough AF for me / my price bracket
    - Full frame
5Ds are like standard issue military cameras, if that were a thing. They can do the job at the highest level while being versatile, durable, and easy to learn.
Most cameras are amazing, but to me the 5D3 is a perfect machine.
I got mine for $500+ btw, so don't feel like a chump if you can't find one cheaper. It's a highly capable, professional camera.

I'm a professional and use a 5DIII as my main shooter. It's a fantastic camera and I have to agree with you that it does great in low light, though I only own primes which is something that was mentioned in the video. I've done a number of concerts in low light and had no issues with it whatsoever though. I feel like I've had no AF issues either, except for in significantly low light scenarios.
I upgraded two years ago from an original 5D that I had been shooting with for 11 years, so to me the upgrades to the 64 point AF and expanded ISO still feel like huge upgrades to me from what I was used to.

I agree. This camera needs light to lift off the shadows. Pushing the shadows results in horrible noise and banding. It recovers highlights well. Low light does not mean no light in Canon land. Although, being a Nikon shooter is is difficult not to expect miracles from the shadows. I think the man shoots Sony which has a lot in common with Nikon in the sensor dept.,

I'm a professional and have used the 5D3 for several years shooting portraits and weddings. The low-light capabilities for this camera make reception shots in any venue totally usable at high ISO. The AF worked just fine tracking my nephew his Senior year in high school basketball. Southern Illinois gyms are notorious for crap lighting to begin with, and the camera did everything I asked it to do just fine. . Dual card slots are a must for someone shooting gigs for money. This camera, especially given today's prices, is a true value. I'd recommend this camera to anyone without hesitation. Are there newer, better cameras, available 12 years after this one was made? Sure, but this camera, still more than capable, IMO. YMMV.

Canon 5dm3 is better now than it was on release day - it takes the same awesome pictures, it costs a fraction of its release price. If you're not making videos and you're into photography - buy it and spend the rest on the lenses. Lenses are way more important than a camera body.

I do understand what you're talkin about the autofocus points but you are more critical on the amount of autofocus points but the autofocus mechanism itself works with lenses and it snaps on really fucking fast. Any professional would not mind using this kind of autofocus because it is very Snappy. As a photographer I feel like everybody should learn how to use simpler versions of features. I use just the center focal point point to where I want to be unfocused and then I reframe for my picture and I do that simultaneously really quick and I take all my shots I don't miss the shots. This camera builds good shooting habits. This is why they created the 2 levels of pressure on the trigger. One to lock the exposure and then fully press to complete the capture but that half press is there so you can put your af point on the thing you want in focus then hold it, reframe and then shoot. I have the 6d mark1 and looking to add this because its old but new enough for me to make up for everything in post. But yhats my style anyway i shoot for post editing since im a heacy graphic designer as well. I shoot flat as possible. I just needed something cheap with a great sensor that at at least had the basics.

When I went from the 5Diii to the EOS R I felt like the auto focus and general operation of the EOS R was insanely sluggish, like I have never cursed at any cameras as much as the EOS R. Many of the things which can be changed and adjusted using muscle memory on the 5Diii required menu dives in the EOS R and EOS RP (like white balance, for example, or toggling from one shot to servo on the 5Diii could be assigned to holding the DOF preview button but on the mirrorless cameras this functionality requires more time, your eyes, a left hand, and/or a little bit of brain power to toggle). I miss having a straight, even row of dual-function buttons on top of the camera, where I could make changes with the camera at my side just by feeling it-- to this day (after five years of owning R series cameras) I couldn't draw a picture of the button layout on the top off any R series camera, it's like they flicked paint blobs on a body and let those blobs dictate where the buttons would sit. Even the physical lock switch on the 5Diii was a smarter choice than the unresponsive sterile push-button on the EOS R, which requires looking at the camera to know if it's locked, or remembering whether you locked it, instead of reaching for a quick feel with your thumb to be sure. When canon went mirrorless they basically took their M50 and put a full frame sensor on it, and designed a menu and touch screen driven camera for Gen Z kids who don't want to put their eye on a viewfinder and don't know why there are "clicks" on the shutter wheel. I miss my 5Diii dearly. I only keep my R6 because it has a flippy screen, but the colors are hot garbage and it feels like a plastic Rebel in the hand.

Oddly, I'm still using the 40d but added the original M a few years later so I could shoot some 1080p video. I've been thinking about picking up the 5d iii for its full frame since they are getting into the affordable range. Not sure what you ended up doing, but I wouldn't bother trading an excellent 6D for an excellent 5D Mark III or IV. 6D is more than awesome for most things and neither 5D model really adds a lot more when compared to other upgrade options out there. I had both the 6D and 5DIII and I used them basically interchangeably. Both had MagicLantern.
For me, in 2024, an upgrade from the 6D would be a mirrorless body. Not sure which, as I jumped away from Canon when they got all possessive about the RF mount, but I do at least like my EOS R. I do shoot a Sony A7III and think its beautiful and works pretty well with Canon glass with an adapter (I use the Sigma MC-11 and find it works fine with both Sigma and Canon lenses). I don't do much of any fast action or video work, so can't comment on how well it handles those tasks.

This camera is amazing. I have to disagree with it being bad for video, if you have magiclantern you can shoot 14bit 1080p RAW which looks better than most cameras today, you can easily upscale the footage to 4k and most people wouldn't even notice

My perspective emphasizes the importance of the photographer's skills over the technical specifications of the camera, highlighting that true artistry and professionalism lie in the mastery of the craft rather than the equipment used.
I'm tired of reading comments about whether a camera is professional or not. Whether it has a lot of pixels, Wi-Fi, AI to take pictures without the user having to think, or video capabilities. Many iconic photographs were taken with cameras that some would call toys. The fact is, if a camera was professional 20 years ago, it is still a professional camera today. It doesn't take worse pictures than it did 20 years ago. Can any one explain why analog cameras are making a comeback today and why many internationally recognized professionals are using them again? As far as I know, analog cameras don't have megapixels, Wi-Fi, USB, or video. Yet, many are returning to film photography, and many never stopped using analog cameras, such as Andreas Gursky.
A professional photographer has knowledge of photography. They master the basic concepts of composition, know their camera, and can experiment with it.
So the discussion about whether one camera is more professional than another is more a discussion about who has more talent using the camera they have at their disposal.
Harry Casimor deRham once wrote: "remember the ironic fact that the perfection which can be drawn from the within the depths of the human being can never be found in a machine."

Not a professional photographer, but please let me know if I'm wrong. People still make amazing photos on cameras from '70, so if you're looking to make great digital photography for not a lot of $ I don't see why this shouldn't be an amazing option in 2023, and also in 2033 and beyond. Video is a different thing ofc due to the recent AF improvements and res requirements.

Hello Mirth, a beginners camera? I would say the opposite. All new camera's the camera does it for you. Now a day's people ''does not need to know'' anything about photography. In those day's when the 5DMark3 came out you had to do the job. Someone who does not understand photography could not handle this camera. I used it as a professional for 5 years and another 5 years with the Canon 5DMark2 and I was extremely pleased with it these day's. To take a shot, learn how to focus instead of that the camera does it for you. About filming, with Magic lantern this camera shoots 14 bit Raw 4K footage.
Its is not my intention to offend you, but please be objective.
    Cheers Richard

When I started going semi-pro in motorsport I upgraded from a 20d to 1d mark 2. Even the 20d didn't give me too many bad shots and I was shooting BSB, WSB and Motogp. The 1d was pretty awesome for autofocus back then and I can't imagine this being any worse give it came out years later. Oddly enough I've using Sony now and I took some pics of my mate on his road bike, all in focus all bang on. Gave the camera to him to shoot me, pics are all garbage and some nowhere near focus. You can't let the equipment do everything. You need some skill.

Go to Canon 5D Mk 11 they are cheap and will allow you to stay in focus while panning till you press down on the rest of the button and 6 shots will rapidly take place in seconds staying in focus just use 1,250 speed as some experts on You Tube told me, It is sad that the later Canons were lacking when compared with the Mk-ll I am not an expert, but I manage to get the job done, THANKS CANON! The 5D Mark III is still used by professionals and it is still relatively expensive for most beginners. If a beginner wants a 5D a better option would be a 5D Mark II or a 5D original.

When the C-19 epidemic struck I left it sealed in storage because my studio was closed.
I, again literally, used the camera for the first time since buying it in 2017 and the image quality was absolutely amazing. Even with the included kit lens.

A real professional can make professional photos with a relative cheap camera. It's maybe not as convenient but composition and proper and correct lighting has very little to do with the camera. It is only when you really blow up the photo very large that you might see the difference. Of course the camera manufacturer has to improve to keep the profits going and selling all the 'positive' points to you as if you can't do without those improvements but general speaking it's not the camera itself but the photographer.

I'm only using this Canon 5D miii with the 17-40mm f/4 lens because of a company I work with, otherwise I would never use this darn thing! I don't like this camera and lens one iota. It weighs a ton, super clunky and doesn't take great pictures and no 4K video. Also has very poor low light performance, super noisy in dark locations, and the AF is a joke, I have to do everything in MF in order to take photos. This camera is an absolute workflow killer, hard to believe this is a full frame camera. I'm selling my Canon R50 because that too has distortion and vignetting issues because of the crop sensor coupled with a subpar Nisi 9mm f/2.8 lens. I'll be getting the Canon R8 with the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 which is perfect for shooting real estate. I would advise anyone getting into real estate to AVOID the 5D miii and the R50. Buy the R8 or any modern Canon full frame with a fixed/fast lens like the Laowa 12mm f/2.8, it's a phenomenal lens on the R8!

You obviously haven't heard about magic lantern either. There's pros filming 5k raw with these things and it looks almost better alot of the 4k cameras currently out right now.
