In Doong village, at a distance of 22 km from Pathankot bus stand, there are Pandav caves temples which are dedicated to Lord Shiva and are situated on the banks of river Ravi. After descending about 250 steps you reach the caves built by Pandavas.
Mukteswar Mahadev Dham was established by Pandavas in the twelfth year of their exile in Dwapar Yuga. During their first journey, Pandavas came from the Dasua district Hoshiyarpur and taken the blessings of Chintpurni and chose this deserted place for their residence.
It is believed that the Pandavas built five caves at this place after staying there for 6 months, established Shivling here and got the blessing of victory for the possible war.
In the Shivling installed in the Dham, straight line is shown, which reflects the blood veins which is actually a symbol of energy. This is the only Shivling of its kind in the entire universe.
Apart from this, the Pandavas also built a kitchen here, which is also known as Dropdi Kitchen.
Just before the beginning of their agyatavas, the Pandavas crossed the Ravi river and entered the borders of the kingdom of Virat, the center of which is today considered to be at Akhnur of Jammu and Kashmir. The description of the greatness of Mukteshwar Mahadev is also found in the Kumarkhand of Skanda Purana.
Cave no. 3 A Chakra is inscribed in the upper part under which the Pandavas used to sit and do Meditation.
Every year a fair is organized here in the temple premises on every day of Mahashivratri, Chaturdashi, Baisakhi and Somvati Amabasya, on this auspicious occasion, the glory of Haridwar is attained by taking bath in river ravi.
