As someone from the Netherlands, a country that is largely below sea level I can tell you that floods are perfectly preventable if you take the right measures. How do I know? Because we haven't had any real floods in my lifetime, or since the sixties.
overlord2304 We also don't build houses in the seawater, at least not without first preventing the sea from reaching that house ever again. Our country is also a lot smaller and more densely populated, so making sure what little land we have stays dry is much more financially viable. Yet even in the Netherlands, the goverment has been lacking when it comes to strenghtening the dams and dunes sufficiently according to our own safety rules, because as long as there is no flood there's no financial incentive to try and prevent floods. Preventing floods is expensive (even though if the area is densely populated enough the potential costs of covering the damages are much greater) Of course, this doesn't apply to to parts of the US that are densely populated and yet are flood-risk areas, where enough money could be gathered to prevent floods in these areas.
Yeah but your coastline is tiny compared to ours. Even if you consider the per capita or per gdp qualifiers, it's way way easier for y'all to deal with your floods.
I love how this show can find a topic that isn’t exactly sexy or prominent in the public’s immediate focus, but manage to make it both interesting and informative. They call to attention an issue that is going largely unnoticed, highlight the impact in a relatable way, and use humor to make a very serious topic approachable and digestible to viewers that might otherwise avoid the subject. That’s just damned good story telling. Your writers are doing a fantastic job, and frequently make more of a contribution than mainstream reporting. Well done.
As a geography student this is like every class I take... but with the added benefit of the seagull warning. That is seriously helpful... Edit: Woah damn! Top comment! Going to take this opportunity to plug my nerdy geography youtube channel where I'm trying to not get depressed about the world going to shit lol. Thanks all!
Yep, people who actually make a study of geography we see this constantly. You just have to suppress the facepalms and go see Geostorm drunk. Like falling down drunk. So drunk that your Uber driver will call for a Lyft to take you to the theater. Drunk geographers at disaster movies is a thing.
CrimsonBlasphemy haha best description of drunkeness I've ever heard. And now I feel like I have to study geography or I'll be missing out... Thanks a lot... I hate geography >.
Omg, the two guys splashing through maybe ankle deep water was just the best thing. You know the producers were cursing and someone probably got fired for letting it happen. But props to Michelle, she didn't break character, she stuck to the bit
As someone who works in Floodplain Management and is a Certified Floodplain Manager, you are right, and even without climate change, they will get worse because we DO NOT HAVE THE DATA NECESSARY TO ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THE RISK IS. We need 800 years worth of data, and only have 30 to 50 years at best. We need to tell people what the actual area of risk is, the Geologic Floodplain.
5:19 - 5:33 whoever puppetted that seagull should have his/her/their payment doubled, that was some seriously good emotional presentation, such a joy to rewatch
I wanna give props to whomever typed up those little blurbs to go with the headlines, despite the fact they were hard to see. That is some serious dedication to the bit and I love it!~
The house I used to own was technically in a flood plain, so I had to buy flood insurance. It was ridiculous because the creek was quite small, and it was behind the houses across the street. And downhill. And the house was built on a slab...no basement, no crawl space. The flood insurance cost more than the homeowner's insurance. It was a real problem when it came time to sell, so I got a surveyor out, and he found that the house was not a flood risk. So the requirement was waived, and I sold the house. Months later, I got a call from the buyer, and she said the requirement was reinstated after she bought it.
Of course people didn't move after learning about flood risk. We are a species that jumps out of airplanes FOR FUN. The potential risk of danger is not going to motivate people to uproot their lives and move.
Well especially if taking that risk is financially incentivised and not at all penalized. Even though the risk is almost 100% more certain than skydiving and still avoidable and unnecessary. Which was what the piece was mainly about I think.
I'm glad that people are taking risks, but unless the payoff for taking that risk outweighs the potential repercussions, then it's just a stupid move. And sure the payoff and repercussions of any situation can be objective, is THIS raelly worth it?
I'm a seagull and I find this fictional depiction deeply offensive. Addiction is a serious and ongoing problem in our community and your lack of sensitivity hurts the waterfowl community as a whole.
I have done a lot of work with those flood maps and they are near worthless. The surveying & engineering was done in the 60's & 70's and has been updated in few areas. Millions of acres of subdivision maps have flood zones that were surveyed before the subdivisions were even built. That and the downstream areas that did exist at the time of the survey dont have flood areas that account for the increased runoff from those subdivisions. But no one complains about not being in a flood zone on a map that would cause you to pay more in homeowners insurance.
GIS based flood plane modeling could produce a better answer, but I believe there is something in the law that says it has to be surveyed by engineers on the ground. Its the enormous cost of doing the survey that is keeping them from doing it. But yea, they should just change that part of the law to allow the software to get closer to an acceptable answer than the professionally surveyed data from 40 years ago.
@@tomat6362 Now I'm curious! Where do you mean? I assume they're around the great lakes region, but are they also around lakes in places like Nebraska?
melissa saint don’t know about Nebraska but in Wisconsin yes we have seagulls or lake gulls I guess but yes, they are places that don’t have water- and that’s why they’re always hanging out around Walmart
I remember a local flood where several houses by a creek fed from a dam repeatedly got damaged by spring floods. The government came in, paid the owners fair market value for the properties, torn the buildings down, carted away the remains and did not allow anyone to rebuild there. Problem solved.
Will Stern It's actually proven that the human mind retains more information when you laugh. It's actually pretty scary. You could potentially use that psychological quirk to brainwash people...
Will Stern because you have shit education? Maybe take advantage of the internet and an encyclopedia (you know, hard copy of imfo just incase your flooded); )
We should have a regulation that once we the taxpayers have paid out more than the property is worth, we should buy the owner out, raze the house, and declare the property ineligible for habitation. Turn it into a park. Get people out of harm's way. We also need to change the building codes, to require higher elevation of homes in flood-prone areas. Just as we can build homes that don't collapse in earthquakes, we can build homes that don't get flooded. (And homes built in "Tornado Alley" should be required to have a "safe room" to protect the people who live there.) Just put some engineers in charge, instead of lawyers, and we can fix things.
Are you really just saying the same argument to every comment? 8cm is a fuckton. You're either trolling or willfully ignorant if you don't think that is significant. No one can possibly be that dumb.
If you think the seas rising by 3 inches per 20 years is not a sufficient argument for the severity of climate change, you're a fucking idiot. You just are.
lots ofthings my hypothesis is that it is kind of a 'first world problem' taken to an extreme. Some people have gotten so comfortable with a lot of the securities, freedoms and conveniences the country provides, they are unwilling to give them up for anything, even if that means blindly rejecting the obvious (to us) truth. That, and circlejerking on the internet and television validating idiots and there are big companies also profiting from a lot of those idiots.
Peppo I wish there were more people like you. But I am honest and say that, although I try to environmental-friendly, I don’t have an electric car or very eco-friendly house. Not exactly unheard of, I'm Dutch and I've had these discussions with other Dutch people, and that's coming from the country at least 60% below sea level...
We live near a town that has a river running through it and every few years the town floods in the spring. Our joke is, people must stay because once in awhile they can say “we have waterfront property”

We need to build a wall around the ocean! that will solve our problems! And it's a plan the president would actually agree to because it is arguable insane.
Well... In the Netherlands we built what is practically a sand wall all around the coast of the country, and we haven't had a flooding in like 60 years despite most of the country being below sea level

I live in FL and once lived in a trailer park/ neighborhood of houses called "Highland Park". I split the rent with friends but ironically "Highland Park" is in a "Low lying Area" so when it rained we'd have to move everything up from the floor ( Speakers, computer tower, etc ..) onto tables until the water drained and then break out the mops. Flood advisories are common even in places no where near the beach and even without the threat of a hurricane. The urban sprawl in Miami - Dade county is so bad that all it takes is a hard rain storm if you live in a low lying area to be have your home flooded. It's better than having no place to live though considering a studio Apt costs a minimum of a thousand dollars!

The problem with people not moving reminded me of things I learned in university recently. How many of these predictions fail because they rely upon people acting rationally, whereas in reality they... Well, they don't.
The problem is that it IS rational. The rich get to have their vacation homes guaranteed by the government, while the poor are left with the option of either staying put, or throwing away a big investment in order to leave. The responsibility for getting a better outcome lies with Congress. Until they stop paying for vacation homes, and start helping people in need get out of risky areas, the cycle will continue indefinitely. But the biggest obstacle is the insurance companies; they get profit guaranteed by taxpayer money, and spend a chunk of it buying politicians to keep it that way. That's why money in politics is the biggest threat to our country; it cripples our problem-solving ability.
It never ceases to surprise me how, in the US, companies and private sector find a way to profit from the government and the taxpayers in the most outrageous and (surprisingly) legal ways. It just teaches so much about the way a completely free and unregulated economy works.
So the law crafted by politicians that spends tax money on these insurance companies....this law is a good example for you of a "free and unregulated economy?" Really sad that people have no idea what unregulated or free means in these terms and just think of them as naughty words. Politicians making stupid laws is not evidence that capitalism is bad, it's evidence that politicians, and by extension, bureaucracy as a whole, is bad. Without having a giant government body with a bunch of stolen money to spend that they can lobby, these insurance companies would be a lot more toothless, don't you think? Corporations gain their sickening power through corruption of politicians. It is a gross symbiotic system. The idea that we just need to have government take over everything is so wrong I fear for what will become of America, when the opinion is so widespread. Socialism and the collapse of the empire seems like the likely outcome.
Everybody loves to point out how John looks like a parrot... and now he's actually going to voice the parrot in the new Lion King reboot. I am so excited, the jokes are endless!
Zazu is a red-billed hornbill, not a parrot. They're different bird groups, but share the "distinction" of being one of the most endangered bird groups in the world.
The house may not have been in a flood plain when purchased. Or the family could have built the house before the government developed the flood plain maps.
I once gave a goose at a campsite some Doritos. After being stalked for days, the goose started runninging into my knees, demanding More and More Doritos. I had to hide in the tent at that point to escape the Goose
My families house flooded in August of 2016. The only reason we did is because the concrete median on the interstate next to our house trapped all the water and forced up the whole interstate for 10 miles from the river. Our Parish is suing the State for that, not that anything will come from it. The State was also supposed to build a divergent canal since 10 years ago, but the project has languished incomplete because the government is corrupt and is pocketing all the casino tax money that was supposed to go to the project. Meanwhile the governor had to fight tooth and nail just to get the Federal Government to give our state enough money to rebuild. And as if that wasn't bad enough, all the area's that were flooded have had their flood zones redrawn, and now our flood insurance is triple what it was before. Fuck FEMA.
$3000 is only enough to get structural damages insurance. If we want to have the contents of our home covered, we'd have to pay double that. And we HAVE to have insurance, because even though our house has been here for almost over 30 years, we aren't grandfathered in, which means we would have to raise our house to be over 6 feet off the ground (something that would cost more than the house is probably even worth)

Funny coincidence, i live in the Northeast, my phone buzzes with a Flash Flood alert...almost a minute later i get a youtube notification about this video about floods

Coincidence I think not😅

Yoo. I got that same notification, lotsa rain today in the northeast- geez

As someone from the Netherlands, a country that is largely below sea level I can tell you that floods are perfectly preventable if you take the right measures. How do I know? Because we haven't had any real floods in my lifetime, or since the sixties.
overlord2304
We also don't build houses in the seawater, at least not without first preventing the sea from reaching that house ever again.
Preventing floods is expensive (even though if the area is densely populated enough the potential costs of covering the damages are much greater)
Of course, this doesn't apply to to parts of the US that are densely populated and yet are flood-risk areas, where enough money could be gathered to prevent floods in these areas.
Yeah but your coastline is tiny compared to ours. Even if you consider the per capita or per gdp qualifiers, it's way way easier for y'all to deal with your floods.
Dude gtfoh you live in a Nordic country. You guys have common sense and shit
...you also host zero hurricanes, which cause a major portion of US floods. Must be nice.
Last time I checked the Netherlands don’t have flash floods and hurricanes.

Shim Novak facts I’ve learned more from John then in college
JjOpoku55 I’m learning more from this show then from my high school
And subtly mentioning that people live in a water body (seriously Tampa Bay is water, Tampa is the city)
Well done.

Same. I'm literally doing a report on climate change and flooding, and I'm going to ask my teacher if I can use this as a source.
Yep, people who actually make a study of geography we see this constantly. You just have to suppress the facepalms and go see Geostorm drunk. Like falling down drunk. So drunk that your Uber driver will call for a Lyft to take you to the theater. Drunk geographers at disaster movies is a thing.

I've never gotten why people always move to areas with a high risk of flooding and to areas where tornados hit EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.
The Modern Investor 90% of time its because the area is beatiful or really affordable
In Houston, for example, homes in flood planes happen to be the cheapest.
The Modern Investor No matter where you go, there are natural disaster possibilities. People just chose to deal with those ones.
It is simply because of ignorance. They don't teach any of this in school, so we all have to learn it the hard way, learning from mistakes.
The Modern Investor North-Snowstorms/blizzards, West Coast- Earthquakes, Midwest-tornadoes, East Coast- Hurricanes, South-Hurricanes/tornadoes

USA: socialize the costs, privatize the profits.
If your house floods more than once from anything other then a water main break, you are at risk. Simple as that

The potential risk of danger is not going to motivate people to uproot their lives and move.
but jumping out of airplanes for fun is less riskier than living in a flood plain. Just saying. lol.
Well especially if taking that risk is financially incentivised and not at all penalized. Even though the risk is almost 100% more certain than skydiving and still avoidable and unnecessary. Which was what the piece was mainly about I think.
People are basically idiotic. They'll jump out of planes for fun and drive snakes to extinction whether they are venomous or not.
I'm glad that people are taking risks, but unless the payoff for taking that risk outweighs the potential repercussions, then it's just a stupid move. And sure the payoff and repercussions of any situation can be objective, is THIS raelly worth it?
cnjdev how about the idiots who intentionally buy coastal flooding homes

I have done a lot of work with those flood maps and they are near worthless. The surveying & engineering was done in the 60's & 70's and has been updated in few areas. Millions of acres of subdivision maps have flood zones that were surveyed before the subdivisions were even built. That and the downstream areas that did exist at the time of the survey dont have flood areas that account for the increased runoff from those subdivisions. But no one complains about not being in a flood zone on a map that would cause you to pay more in homeowners insurance.
Don Parkison If you own a home you should have to have flood insurance. IMO the problem is that they only give you the insurance in flood zone areas.
Don Parkison same. GIS is much better now and I can't believe those ancient maps are still used..
@@LeolaGlamour They only REQUIRE flood insurance in flood prone areas. They don't GIVE you anything.

Half a mil paid out in flood insurance on a $60k house? Makes sense.
Maggie E Of course, no other solution.
Should have bought a pontoon houseboat and moored it there. Best long term investment and it’s flood proof

How are flat-earthers like you even using the internet today.

I bet those houses are real cheap...seemed like a fun neighborhood to live in. Come on, this is New York
Game theory
tiscroc100
Not every part of New York is expensive. NYC is but the New York State itself pretty much a dull.
Im just gonna build a house on the sun and get fire damage insurance. Makes just much sense as this...

It never ceases to surprise me how, in the US, companies and private sector find a way to profit from the government and the taxpayers in the most outrageous and (surprisingly) legal ways. It just teaches so much about the way a completely free and unregulated economy works.
And nothing about how increasing size and scope government attracts those companies like flies to honey?
The funny part is that these companies are making money directly from government regulations.
Lol
Unregulated Market Economy do your evil laugh.

Fuck FEMA.
How much money was the flood insurance before?? And how much is it now?
Good question Mimyakko. "triple" of $1,000 to $3,000 is a lot, triple of $5 to $15 isn't.
