    @zordmaker You have a chance to ride'em again.
    There's some cars being restored for mainline operations & currently there are volunteer crews willing to be trained to drive them. Historic Electric Traction is gearing up now to accept new volunteer recruits & probably within 2-3 years, the return of the Red Rattler will beckon a new tourist travel for Sydney.

    Yeah, agreed. I call em Rusty Old Trains.
    That is until you put the pan up, Put it on a track, Hit the Go lever,Stand by the door and ride 50 tons of screaming steel down the track at 110kph. I guess for someone who hasnt done that (and lest face it, these things have been off the track now for 16 years) there can be no attachment.

    I bought a model of this at the end of last year via Bergs' at Parramatta. Spent 10 years at least waiting for them to be re-released. Im pleased to say that power cars C7516 and C7485 live on, as do trailer cars T4561 and T4620- in H.O form! Only problem is that the model runs really smoothly with barely a sound, unlike the real thing!

I will checkout the sites you mentioned, thanks again, cheers Dean

    @rulestherails Actually, you can!!
    The Sydney Electric Train Society & Historic Electric Traction are both restoring a good number of red cars for future mainline operations. You can become a volunteer with either or both of these societies...both with one goal:
    To preserve & restore the vintage electric rollingstock back to the mainline.
    Check out their websites & be surprised!!

    I was there as a bystander on the scrap roads in 1992, watching the destruction of these fine trains. It was a very sad sight, and even 18 years later is still chilling. :-(
    We can thank the Media and our guttless Politicians for this. :-(

    I recognise the music, it's Mark Knopfler's "Going Home" from the movie, Local Hero, though I don't think that's Knopfler performing it. You've got to be careful when putting music on TH-cam videos lately. TH-cam have been known to challenge uploaders on music copyright issues. That's why my uploads contain no embedded music. If I'm editing for DVD, I'll use music, but not for uploads to TH-cam. On second thought, perhaps it was Knopfler! An extended version maybe of Going Home.

    • @NeathSpadge
      @NeathSpadge 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have had to remove a lot of 80s music that I used to put over old videos. Have been worried about the copyright.
      Have never heard this song before, but instantly though Knopfler. Parts of it sound very much like one of his other songs.
      TH-cam has a massive range of available music if needed. Took me a good while to realise it :-)

    Only selected cars had asbestos sheeting in the roofs as insulation. There were two types - White and Blue. The White consisted of preformed sheets which are safe as long as they are not disturbed. The Blue however was blown in and highly dangerous - such that when disposed of, the entire roof was cut off the car and buried as a whole. Of the preserved ones remaining, some still have white but all are stabilised.

    What's happening to those DD Tullochs at Redfern? There are 9 there now, all still painted grey, although some have graffiti on them and missing windows. They scrapped a heap of them at Maintrain, however some of these redfern carriages were moved from Maintrain just before they scrapped the others.

    it's really sad that the fate of the trains in the abandoned Eveleigh Maintenance Centre (Platfrom 1 side) ended up with the claw.

  • @zordmaker
    @zordmaker  17 ปีที่แล้ว

    About 40% of the cars were sold as is, most without undergear. A further 30% were disposed of using traditional oxy / cut techniques. Less than 20% met their end using "the claw" which was only bought in when the scrapper fell behind on the contract just before it ended.

    @gregbassace1 I've actually had plans drawn up to do that with a Tangara non control carraige, Except with the bedroom upstairs due to the curve on the upper windows. Just awaiting one to come up on tender as the council A-OK'd it. Except planned with Solar power (have a mate that can make the custom solar panel to mould over the roof where the old Air con unit used to sit above the door. been planning it for about 4 years now just have to grab the carraige now for it to happen)

    What are they? Are they the silver double deckers? They were always heaps better in the 80's when I was a kid

  • @zordmaker
    @zordmaker  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The cars at Petersham are going to be replaced by old V cars. There is a rumour about Dorrigo, but who ever cares what happens up there.
    The cost between scrap and sale is about the same so if there are buyers who want them they will probably be sold.

  • @gregbassace1
    @gregbassace1 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @rdrogel Just think about how much room there is in a silver double deck. Once you remove the seats, imagine this:
    The former driver/guards compartment converted to bathroom with toilet inside the former drivers cab
    Upstairs is your loungeroom
    Downstairs is your bedroom
    Other end is your kitchen
    At best, the scrap value of these cars minus wheelsets is about $2000ea. With wheelsets, perhaps $5000ea. There's the crane & semi to get your car to your property - about $10000. Still, cheap living.
