This is a picture of the Bow River Alluvial Diamond Mine that operated between 1988 and the 1995. The squares that can be seen are the tailing ponds. The purpose of these ponds is that once the initial screening for diamonds has been completed, the residue is placed into these dams where they are further refined in order to obtain more diamonds. Around the outside of these dams are smaller dams, this is where the top 2 - 3 meters of top soil was removed to be put through the process plant. The mine was closed due to lack of production and also an uncertainty over native title claims.
