- After he recorded his 2023 single “Lil Boo Thang,” an exuberant dance-rap party-starter that samples The Emotions’ 1977 disco-soul classic “Best Of My Love,” Paul Russell kept hearing the same thing from people: “I haven’t heard anything new that makes me this happy!”
As Russell explains on the latest episode of Verified, he was inspired to write “Lil Boo Thang” after hearing “Best of My Love” and vibing with the track’s signature horn riff. He wound up sampling the instrumental and later writing lyrics to go along with the upbeat music. The finished product has now earned him more than 44 million Spotify plays.

Shooting that shot - It is a slang phrase for taking a chance or making an attempt, usually in talking to someone that a person has romantic interest in.

The first bit, he says it's a new song but it's not. It's a sample, he took the song Best Of My Love and spoke slang ebonics over the top of it.
Even if that's true... that MAKES IT a NEW song!

He seems like a cool dude but there’s nothing original about the song. Just someone laying down an inferior new melody to an already established classic. There’s nothing inventive being done with this sample, which is a shame. Because I do agree with his sentiment. Just think he could’ve added some more effort into it tho.

The track is happy and hot but lets be honest, the lyrics is promoting cheating and disrespect of loving relationships. So, it's still the same kind of song we have way too much of today. Songs that promote immorality and immoral behavior. Still not good!
