That's it, I am going to create Canadian Jiu Jitsu. We take shots of Maple Syrup after class, all wear plaid gis only, and overly apologize for even the slightest accident.

The whole part of leg locks separating AJJ from BJJ is very true and a significant observation. The separation must be identified and understood. We as Americans must find this level of pride, because honestly, as a younger competitor, I had the view that a brazilian of my belt was superior. We need to graduate to a point where we are no longer diminishing ourselves this way. Great talk guys.

It’s interesting to hear Keenan talk about Culty Jiu Jitsu teachers, it really brings back memories of my the guy I started training with. Class would be over two hours long and he would talk for 80% of it. He thought he was a comedian and life coach and of course he slept with all the female students. I’m glad I got out of there.

amazing vision from keenan. i training in brazil, and here it happens the same. the masters/sensei's, they are like one specie of religious gurus, but sometimes don't give the example. they don't speak english and live in their own bubbles in a globalization world. congrats for the courage to say the truth. usually, some guys use the black belt to hide their own character deffect and impose authority without meritocracy. i know one good training partner who couldn't get his black belt after 12y training because he differed politically from his master. hope some day learn from americans or brazilians living in America. brazilians love McDonald's, Coke, Budweiser and Pizza Hut. Me, particullary prefer drink water, juice and see leglocks. 😂😂😂 wholes foods and trader joes are amazing markets. oss from brazil, josh and keenan, keep going guys with the Podcast without lose the respect with brazilians that love you like fighters. u guys, being americans and doing a great job like this, are doing much more for the sport and comunnity than many top Brazilians. hawaii and phillipines are beautiful places like here. ✌️✌️✌️

about women banned from jiu jitsu. how do they stay in the sport with guys greeting them like pitbulls and bad boy faces, barbarians, smelly kimonos, dirty gym and harassment? good to think about.

The asking to use the bathroom is out of courtesy for the coaches in adult class especially when sparring or drilling. For kids class it’s a safety issue. We did it in judo so I was surprised at the recent backlash. BJJ has many influences including judo and professional fighting and we need to ask ourselves what kind of practice are we running, an amateur competition team or a club for hobbyists to hang out. I don’t see anything wrong with either and I’m glad we got options but I’m not for tearing down other peoples methods.

I think your missing a important factor. Robert drysdale often speaks about.. When jiu jitsu was in Brazil it adopted a massive amount of laid back surf culture. Then it went to California as well. Besides that the art itself feeds into the laid back style with its guard play allowing non athletes to overcome insanely athletic people.. - even the best guys in Brazil n cali wilm smoke a couple jays show up pull guard choke the piss outta everyone including the athletes.. then go out with the boys to meet the girls … nobody wants to ask to go to the bathroom. My gym was the best in the country all killers winning every competition but it was the loosest practices ever seen. Play Fights in rafters 35 feet up took place during class …
Judo is insanely different. The art itself feeds into athletics. The serious competition judoka are all young, it’s not a young man game and I got this opinion from multiple famous judoka

Judo gyms in America are still just teaching Judo. Even when they have different teaching methodologies, even when they're getting people ready for the olympics.
"Brazilian" isn't just denoting a federation or national body it is a denoting an entire martial art. A style that is an offshoot of Judo that focuses largely on groundwork. All of it's lineages lead back to Brazil, unlike other styles of gendai jujutsu like the JJIF. Whether it's Maeda and the Gracies or the other Japanese instructors in Brazil like the Ono Brothers, Takeo Yano or Geo Omori.
There actually are American lineages of Judo and Jiujitsu btw, ones that DO NOT go back to Brazil. None of us, not Keenan, not me, not Josh and not any our coaches are from those lineages though.

    AJJ is Australian jiu jitsu.
Unless you are changing the sport its a weak argument but we all get it, having brazilian in the name seems like we are all on the outer.

btw great conversation with Keenen. I don't share the same opinion as him, because I'm American and my lineage is through Europeans, who learned from Brazilians. Am I supposed to say that I'm learning European Jiu Jitsu? I'm with you Josh, I just call it Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ, Bodenkampfen, wie auch immer. IMO, distinguishing between BJJ, AJJ, (EJJ?) is not so important to me.

American Jiu-Jitsu? But Jiu-Jitsu is already American because Brazil is a country that belongs to the Americas. Brazilians are South Americans, you just need to study a little!😂😂😂😂😂
