I understand not wanting (or being able) to spend a lot of money on dates, but this is the thing, what he did is not a good substitute. He could've taken her sightseeing, orrrr maybe a walk along the beach or a flower field picnic, something romantic. Or even later on in the evening, maybe stargazing or something else intimate and fun! As long as you can open up to the person and show them that you'd really like to know them - you'll make a good impression! What he did was horrible and not even remotely a good first date! He was controlling, overshared, and immediately forced his living habits on her! He didn't think about what she wanted at all and I feel really bad for her actually. She looked SO uncomfortable, definitely deserved better.

Some free advice for everyone: If you are dating someone, absolutely DO NOT guilt trip them or make them feel like they're doing something wrong.
Some people such as myself have severe anxiety and things like that do not end well. I know it can get exhausting but people with anxiety need constant reassurance and comfort. It takes patience but if you really love the person it will be easy for you.
Guilt-tripping anybody who hasn’t done anything wrong is just a weird, manipulative thing to do. People don’t need to stand for that BS. Not from a date, partner, friend, SO, spouse or anyone.
