Impaling Thrust - An Underrated Ash of War | A Basic & Effective Stance Breaking Build

- This video, is a comprehensive guide on how to create an extremely effective stance breaking build, using Impaling Thrust Ash of War, when combined with a Greatsword.
Unlike my other videos, in this one, I have added significant detail showcasing the effectiveness of this Ash of War. Not only against main game bosses, but when facing enemies while traversing Elden Ring's open world.
Personally, this simple, yet, powerful build is one of my favourites in the game. Despite the Ash of War and it's stance breaking ability, it is often overlooked in place of other weapons raw damage ability.
Admittedly, It's not strongest but makes for a more fare and balanced playstyle which is a lot of fun.
There are some additional things I forgot to mention in the video:
- For Elden Beast I swapped the Greenburst Tear with the Crimsonwhorl Bubble Tear, to absorb Elden Stars.
- All fights were done with a 25+ Heavy Infused Iron Greatsword.
- The Lite R2 combo is most effective and noticable on great swords. Using this Ash of War on other weapons WILL have different results.

I use backup saves so I can take on almost every boss instantly. These are technically not full runs! This is done for game play and time optimization.
Footage has been captured from the Elden Ring PS4 version on the PS5 for better performance.

Treat yourself to 33 stance damage of impaling thrust
I'm glad you're also aware of the lagless heavy attack after impaling thrust. Loved running this with the Lordsworn Greatsword (I know it's suboptimal but I like the fashion)
Is it really suboptimal? Should go pretty well with the 110 crit multiplier on the lordsworn greatsword
Keen Guardian Short Spear + Impaling Thrust just carried me through the DLC. Tried loads of new things but that combo is a beast.

Curse you, Sax. Here I am gearing up to finally do my overdue Blasphemous Blade build, a weapon I've never really used despite how popular it is, and now you've him me, a stance-break addict, with this gem. Now I need to rethink all my plans.
I have tinkered with Impaling Thrust a bit when I was experimenting with a Dex/Int build I was designing for the DLC. Saw great promise with Impaling Thrust when testing it with Malenia but I ultimately went with Glintblade Phalanx since it went better with my overall build. Now I need to consider this AoW again for my next run...
And that was a FANTASTIC intro, by the way. You laid out everything clearly and well and that montage of clips was EPIC. Knocking Malenia out of her Scarlet Bloom attack? YIKES!

Piercing fang is also cracked. Its range is amazing and the stance damage is great as well. Would recommend if you haven’t used it before.
Some well deserved love for the thrust
This one is interesting because it’s very similar to Piercing Fang, but with a few key differences. They’re both fantastic for closing distance and doing heavy stance damage.
Piercing Fang ignores 100% of block negation and has a better turn radius, meaning it’s easier to redirect between enemies. Impaling Thrust on the other hand ignores 85% of block negation and doesn’t turn as well, but costs less FP and has some great chainable combos as mentioned with the follow up R2. Great video!
I'm pretty sure piercing fang travels further. I was just testing impaling, piercing and giant hunt today.

I know this comment is two days old but the best weapon to use it on is keen guardians swordspear and the best talismans are shard of Alexander, winged sword insignia, millicent's Prosthesis and ritual Sword Talisman (or spear talisman but that isn't super consistent)

ngl that maliketh kill was insane
I used this on a Partisan with a greatshield for those pesky Night’s Cavalry in the Snowfield. Oh and the Black Blade outside the Beastial Sanctum. It’s a reliably effective combo, especially with a status proc’ing grease or affinity.
I love this ash, excellent way to expand a weapon's move set (if it doesn't have a thrust already).
The standard 2h knight build is always fun to see
One note about Impaling Thrust that's often overlook as well:
this shit can be aimed left and right, front and back but also UPWARDS.
This thing can hit dragon's head and other weakspots it's actually OP at times.
With a Great Shield, you can have the perfect attack and defence for ANYTHING!
The direction part is great advice! I found that super useful in PvP..
My favorite Time fighting margit and Tree sentinel early was relying heavily on this ash, so consistent and reliable
I really like using this ash, I don’t see enough people using it. It definitely has a super quick and hard thrust. That’s for sure.
you should do repeating thrust next,personally one of my favourite ashes of war when put on something like a rapier

I wonder if there is a viable stance break build at higher new game cycles it's such a shame to me personally that the stance gets so high at ng+ this stuff isnt always as easy as people make it look. You have to know when to be aggressive and when it's safe to trade hits etc and considering the damage in this game, as well as the fact they still think having stance be invisible is fine is easier said than done.
Yeah the increased stance health is what put me off NG+7. Like its a core mechanic that definitely becomes less noticeable. And yeah you're 100% right about being harder than it looks!
I’m on NG + 7 and I’m able to stagger everyone with this build still. Not as bad honestly, then again I’m a way higher level so that could be it too.
It’s the Black Knight Greatsword with the perfect Art of War for it!

I habitually approach ER bosses like it's DS1/2/BB, often forgetting AOWs exist. No clue why. Beautiful showcase. It clearly IS very satisfying to stop these super-fast combo-hungry boss fucks in their tracks with one simple lunge.

The blue assassin talisman also works well, especially at minimum Mind-not only are you getting all those stance break crits, but a good backstab here and there too!

Im curently using this on cross naginata. L2, r2, r1 for a triple stab and hope bleed kicks in. Some other weapons i use are lordsworn straight sword with square off, great epee with storm blade, twinblade with quickstep and night rider glaive with stormcaller

I basically just perfected my knight today with getting impaling thrust on my claymore. 9 FP! sold me over piercing fang. Cant believe it took me 2 years of playing the game to finally land on a very simple basic build that is absolutely devastating in pve.
Yeah, it's kind of unbelievable how some thing so basic like this is so damb affective against almost everything!
Maliketh skipped poise for fashion.
Slick build, as always. My favorite stance break runs were Guard-counter, Wing of Astel, and Ice Spear.

guys if you wanna follow the guide just stick to 54 strength and 20 endurance, take spectral lance on a short spear and glintblade phalanx on misericorde, then do the critical hits with the dagger

Going to try this with Flamberge, because I'm also not a fan of the sheaths!
Flamberge is a fantastic option because of default bleed!
Question: How much experimentation goes into these showcases, so you know how many hits you need to hit before you get a stance break?

It varies. Most bosses at this point I pretty much know how their poise meter is going, except when Malenia decides to do her restore BS.
For context, the main boss combat showcase took me just over 5 hours to record, the hardest and most frustrating being Elden Beast.
Basically when I test, and I figure out a certain way is possible, I just keep fighting until I replicate it again.
This is all in the context when I can be bothered doing no hit stuff of course.
Great video dude, I recently learned that carian grandeur gets hyperarmor when used on a greatsword, might be worth checking out at some point.

i finished the entire game with the iron greatsword (scaling s in strength) plus impaling trust

I really like piercing fang. I dont know if you tested already, but did you think it has the same stance break capability?
PF is a great AoW! But, it isn't as good. IMO for stance breaking. On a GS the attack does 3 more stance damage (36), it does have more range, but you can't pull of the L2 L-R2 L2 combo due to its recovery and wind up time.

But i think Impailing Thrust actually has more utility
I think it has way more utility. Especially from its low FP cost.

Like Lion’s Claw, I don’t use because it’s effective I use because doing a flip, and pancaking Banished Knights is fun.
Fair enough. Each to their own. I personally find Lion's Claw extremely overrated. There's only so many flips you can do before it gets boring.

Best way to farm the iron greatsword?
The fastest is at the Haligtree Town Plaza Site if Geace. Go to your right and theres one there.
If you want it earlier, the first place is in the capital. There two before the elevator that takes you to the forbidden lands.
in order to take advantage of the combos, is iron greatsword required? or does it work with other greatswords as well?
Any Greatsword. Light Greatsword works well in the DLC too.

Nah, you can certainly chuck in status stuff to make it more powerful. Not having a ranged ability is ofcourse a let down, as I find ranged abilities very important in ER.

Im going to start a new character today and see how far I can get in 2 hours running this on a bastard sword. Its only a few AR behind the Iron and can get right away. The 1h R2 comes out so quick between impaling thrusts.
It's wild! It can 100% carry you the entire game. The only time it might not work well is against Ancient Dragons and the Lichdragon.

Honestly, ar 150 this is already solid as hell. You dump thosr 50 stats where ever you like at that point! An alternative option is pump up Dex and go quality it'll do a bit more damage.

Spear talisman is actually usually what I rock with this! As your right its fantastic. Great replacment for the Dagger talisman! I used the Dagger Talisman just for the crit hits.
How does this fare on the Zweihander or is it too slow compared to a greatsword?
My assumption is that a greatsword is just going to outclass the zweihander by pure speed since it basically poise breaks anything after 2 hits.
Man I'd love if the Zweihander could have Impaling Thrust. It'd be amazing! That weapons is fantastic, and Giants Hunt does work well on it.
But the GS L2 Lite R2 L2 combo is so god damn fast.
From my endless hours in this game, it is honestly one of the most affective and fast stance breakers around.

I've played with a bunch of builds before and most are gimmicky. I love builds that can carry you and have room to breath!

Do you have some advice to use it on uchigatana?
I think it works fine on the Uchi and or the Nagakiba. Stat focus however I am not 100% sure whats best. Possibly dex or occult. Haven't tested enough sorry.
How much deference will it make if I use claymore with spear talisman?
Damage wise, not lots, as Spear Talisman only works on Counter Attacks.
But It'll still be an amazing set up for sure.

Gonna run this build into the dlc! Except I’m going sword and board (with golden greatshield!) People are saying it might not be viable in NG+ is there any truth to that?
Nah, this community doesn't understand the meaning of viable. You can beat this game with basically anything if you are patient. I'd recommend checking out my Authentic Knight build for a good talisman setup for Sword and Board playstyle.

Not with the Lite R2 combo. Piercing Fang Does I think 5 more, but takes longer + you can't use R2 Immediately.

It's 33 stance damage regardless if I one-hand or two-hand the weapon right? I want to use a greatshield so I have access to guard countering. Plus Sword and Shield is my fav aesthetic. :D

L2 R2 L2 combo does way more damage and poise damage than that.
The only downside with this Ash of War is that it puts away any off-hand stuff away, despite the skill using only one hand. It's only a nitpick tho.
There isn't many skills that keep both off hand stuff active sadly. It sucks alright!
How would you change this around for a dex build
Possibly a Dex infused Nagakiba. That thing with Impaling Thrust is good!!!
Or if you want to stick with the greatsword, flamberge has an almost identical range and move set + bleed!

@@xensare7689 Main one I'd always keep is Alexander's Shard, the other 3 can be mixed up. I personally don't think the Dagger Talisman is the best.
Id prefer Dragon Shield GS for more defence.
Axe or Spear talisman are also 2 other good alternatives.
Dagger talisman, just isn't that exciting IMO personally.

Beat the game first time a couple weeks ago with this, but also came to the conclusion that ashes of war are way too op and have since beat the game twice with no AOW
Ashes of war deal out crazy stance damage at the speed of an R1
Yup AoW/Skills got massively buffed in ER compared to earlier games.
@@SaxSlaveGael there’s no risk vs reward imo like you can fire off an impaling thrust for more stance damage than a charged heavy in the same time as an R1
SQUARE OFF does 40 stance damage and consume 6 fp
Doesn't have the same range, speed or do combo's like this. But yes SO is a solid AoW
