2021 Finke Desert Race track pre-run 2021 YZ450F testing

- We loaded up and travelled to Alice Springs from Perth to get some experience on the almighty Finke track before the race in June.
It’s completely different to anything I’ve competed in before which made the trip even better!
The track was fairly smooth with some nasty wash outs from heavy rain.
Thanks to all the locals and everyone that helped out and made the trip so enjoyable.
The 2021 YZ450F was an animal and included some GDR Suspension from the guru (Greeny).

Back in the ...ahem....good ol' days, I did this race on an XT 600 Belgarda (No. Not the pretend TT 600 Belgarda, the real one from Italy). Concussion, dehydration, no skin left on my hands, and a torn right ACL at the 40 K outbound marker. 20 years on and I still think about it as one of my crowing achievements, even though I didn't manage anything more than just finishing. "Just finishing' Finke is generally enough to shut down anyone telling you how hard they race. I can still taste the cordite in my mouth, from when I was a Main Battle Tank Gunner. I can still smell my newborn Children. Every Queens Birthday weekend, I can still feel the XT between my legs and the bars in my hands. This will change your life. This will define some part of you. I wish you the best of luck, this coming race. If I may offer some advice? Scrutineering is extremely thorough. Check your spokes. Leave your front sprocket guard on. Get there early. You'll get a Hospital band on your wrist, once you've done scrutineering. That's how serious this is. Don't worry too much about prologue. Get a good time, but don't go so silly that you bin it, fuck yourself up, and miss the race. Check all your stuff and check it again. I saw a guy tapped out because he hadn't tightened his handlebars.....go figure. Put fuel at every stop. Better to have it and not need it than vice versa. And, don't forget. You're only racing the clock. Once again. Best of luck.

But I gotta agree with the advice,
I finished it on my 300 in 2012, planned on going back to better my time but haven’t got around to it.
And it’s given me plenty of yarns when around a fire after a ride.

@@jacksonmcgrath109 18 or 19 rear? How does the MX gear ratios go, what sprox you running? Steering dampener? How far you get on a tank?
I feel an 18 rear is a must, you need that extra inch of tyre. I ran 14/44 but if I was to run an mx bike I’d go to 14/42 to get that bit extra. You can definitely feel the load on the box.
Scott’s steering damper. 10L tank got me roughly 90kms so just enough for 2 fuel stops down the track

I said i'd see how you went, on this most mammoth adventure. So.....how'd you do? Keen to hear your respective on the race. Was it a chalenge? Were you out of your depth? Did you finish? If not, why not? Hope it al went your way and you're not injured.
Hey Marty,
I had a very disappointing run this year! I injured both of my knees and had 4 weeks off leading up to the event so I was just aiming to limp through.
I got dusted out in prologue and had to cruise to 26th outright.
I was coming through the pack fairly quickly and moved up to 17th place. I then made a poor decision to pass in the dust and it ended in a large crash.
Lucky to walk away but the bike was totalled.
Regroup and aim for a better prologue and actually finish the race next year 👍🏽

It’s a lot slower than it use to be in the 80s when we ran 500 two strokes and the track is in much better condition
