When we say a tornado is a mile wide, or whatever width we say, we are describing the area of damage produced by a tornado, not the actual size of the funnel. This is the same method tornado damage experts use to officially rate a tornado a specific EF rating. A funnel may only be 50 yards wide, but the tornadic winds may span out a mile, causing damage further out than one might realize. We try to be as accurate as possible when describing tornadoes and it is our desire and goal to be set apart and not sensationalize weather events.

I was in the middle of this. I had made a run to restock my water and soda supply after donating my other to a fire station helping a town, little Axe, since they had been hit the day before by a tornado. I didn't think I had slept late so jumped in my car and headed to the Aldi in Moore. I went in the sky was cloudy but I didn't see anything out of the norm. There was others there as well. When I was done I stepped outside and it was pouring rain. I decided to give it a few to see if it slowed down, it did, it completely stopped. I loaded my cart and headed home. As soon as I was in the car I heard the siren go off. I checked and found a channel with the weather. A tornado was on the ground in west Moore, I was in west Moore. I heard the direction it was headed so I took the long way home. Thinking I was a head of it , the forecaster said the direction had changed. At that point it was right in front of me. There was nothing I could do but cry and scream as it was destroying houses on both sides of me. I survived but will never forget. We lost our home and both cars but so many lost something so much more precious.
I truly believe that all structures in OK should have mandatory 6-inch concrete walls on the outside and all load bearing walls the same...must be firmly bolted to the ground and roof is designed to shrug off most wind and be firmly attached to the building in side.......particle board and that sfb crap should be banned.There should be a public tornado shelter capable of holding up to 200 people ...and be supplied with water,food and medical supplies and have doctors and nurses stationed there during severe weather events.All schools should have a built in tornado structure,(above or below does not matter).It would cost more in the short run,but would save more lives and property in the long run,and i think the people of OK would approve it.That would also mean that parents would not have to worry so much for children's safety and more people would stay off the road.This is just my opinion as a storm chaser.

Yeah, it may seem stupid, but would you have rather he caused a gas leak or a water pipe issue and damaged his property and the neighboring properties with his stupidity? There's a reason why you have to get permits to do that type of work on your property. It's dangerous not only for you, but for your neighbors and the people around you, if you don't take precaution and check your ass. Digging into the ground where there are pipes and other dangerous equipment isn't a good idea. I think it's more stupid to dig a hole in your yard without getting it checked and getting a fucking permit so people don't get hurt by your stupid mistakes. Hmm...
I just watched your '99 footage and heard some similar names (Gary, 149th street etc.) How did your experience chasing the '13 tornado compare to the '99 chase?.
@Andy Wehrle And the 2 tornado paths crossed paths so a small area experienced both the 99 and 2013 tornado. I lived on S.W. 134 th street and the tornado when just south of me.
My mom lived this day and she said that when they were on the interstate my dad told her look at that cloud and she said that’s not a cloud it’s a tornado
Our friends took a direct hit from that monster. They lost everything. Do to all of the debris and downed power lines, it took us over 2 hours to walk to their home location. Only to find it completely destroyed. Our friend Darrin, who was walking with us (in tears and a bundle of nerves), had just got there to meet up with us from his business. He informed us through his tears that his wife was buried in their storm cellar at their home. We finally got there on foot and Darrin was able to free his wife from the storm cellar (Thank The Lord!). There were gunshots everywhere. People were putting their injured livestock out of their misery......:-(......A little boy came up to my son and begged him to come shoot his severely injured pony. It was a nightmare in there. What we saw walking in there was horrific!.......I still have nightmares.
StormSpotterMike put out a great video about this tornado with clips from Gary England and the crew, Val and Amy, Jim Gardner and others. It was a terrific video and for some reason it was lost. I don't know if there was a copyright issue or what but looking at this video tells half the story-the tornado looks even bigger and wilder from the helicopter. I've never seen a tornado grow from a needle to a stovepipe as fast as this one did.

Gary I've been chasing storms since 1999 and I've never learned to turn my windshield wipers off. Other than that thanks for getting close to the tornado and giving us this good footage!
7:15 At this time, the Briarwood Elementary School is taking a direct hit to the tornado and completely demolishes the school at EF4 intensity. The damage to Briarwood was originally rated EF5 but after further analysis it was downgraded to EF4 damage in 2014. No fatalities occurred at this location thankfully.

This was actually a single vortex tornado which is crazy how large and strong it was. The typical strong EF5s ( Joplin, El Reno, Andover, Hackleburg, Rainsville, Manitoba, The May 3, 1999,etc were multi- vortex tornados.
This was not a single-vortex tornado. When the tornado was touching down (about a few minutes before the video started), Val and Gary noted that small wisps were being observed. Not all multi-vortex tornadoes show their vortices, because they are within the main circulation. In fact, IMO all tornadoes are multi-vortex because the funnel connects both from the ground up and from the thunderstorm on down. A tornado doesn't just plant itself like someone sitting down.

Classic wedge and you can make out the multiple vortices in the rotation. The debris ball was massive because everything that was picked up stayed in the air for a long time, but the actual tornado was far smaller. As for the 1.3-mile wide peak, that was before it crossed I-44.
Wow, you can really see the violence of this bad boy. So many vids of the Moore tornado are hard to see what is happening, whether cause if the perspiration, or just the chaos is general. So mesmerizing when you can see the force this thing had.
So you were headed north on S Santa Fe Ave and had to stop around SW 28th St? (Not from Moore, had to figure it out from maps) It must have been hitting Briarwood as you filmed and was headed to Plaza Towers :(

I am glad I received your FB request to "Like" your FB page, as your FB page also pointed me in the direction of your TH-cam channel and this particular video. So, fortunately, I ended up here, as this video contains more images & commentary than I heard from you while following Channel 9's coverage live on that terrible day. Well, even though we are almost 21 months removed from this incredible event, I'd like to express my compliments to you both re: your skills as chasers & videographers. You did impressive work! Just as important, you both are consummate professionals and it's clear that while the two of you are fascinated by severe storms & tornadoes, neither of you ever forgot that there are people suffering dearly because of this monster Although I am sure that, in the moment, you both experienced the same strange mixture of excitement, awe, pride, fear, anger, etc that all chasers feel while having a successful storm chase & getting a prime view of a massive violent tornado, I couldn't help but hear a lot of fatigue & sad resignation in your voice while you informed Gary that the tornado was roping-out. It appears to me that you were already beginning to grieve the likely loss of life & massive destruction that the tornado had caused. IMHO, your mindsets at that moment are a real testament to your honourable motives & respect for the people you serve as an official storm chaser for Channel 9. Kudos to you both!
Man I remember this. I was in town, Cushing, alone with my little ones and my mom asked me to come out to the house. We kept the news on and plus watched outside cause they live about an hour north of the city. We got some of the winds and then it moved through Cushing towards Drumright. That was not a fun day. Y'all did a good job.
I've seen a lot of tornado videos over the years, but I don't think I've ever seen one get killed by a burst of downward-moving air like that. Great video, thanks for sharing.
That thing was extremely violent, massive, and moving at a Jarrell-like pace. What an absolute catastrophe of a storm. Several suction vortices are often a sign of an extremely violent tornado.
No. It isn't. This guy clogged streets from actual meteorologists and gave terrible notes of this weather event. He didn't give good descriptions or directions of where this was heading. Pure adrenaline junkie that needs to stop other professionals from their job.
Loved the final minutes where it "roped-out", then the condensation funnel/vortex dissipated into a "pig-tail"..and vanished! The awesome powers & abilities of Mother Nature!! A lot about tornadic activity is still get to be learned. But, y'know, we're getting there!
Rating the width should be changed in my opinion. I know it’s based of damage but that confuses your average person. It should be based off of actual funnel. The Fujita scale should also be changed. There are tons of tornadoes that never hit anything significant and have had recorded winds over 250mph and have only damaged minor buildings. I think the el Reno tornado was rated ef3 but since it never hit anything significant it was rated ef3. I think the actual wind speed recorded inside the funnel was 300mph.

Still hasn't been an "official" EF5 since this though no doubt there have been some that were capable, like the Soso MS tornado from Easter Sunday of 2020.
Yeah, that station typically had multiple chasers in the field each vying for air time, unreliable streaming back to the station, Gary was constantly on the air and so a chaser had to make some noise to get his attention, all in an area with nebulous cell connectivity.
I always feel like the chasers leave their locations too early. Maybe the video doesn’t show how close they are to the tornado when they decide to leave.

Sad story. I lived through lots of hurricane s in florida panhandle. These tornado s seem way scarier

Water you talking about? Around 6:28 and on, you could see the carousel of smaller vortices circle from left to right

@lancecurry7538 that was multi-vortex. Andover Kansas, last year would be a strong single vortex tornado with the drill bit feature.

I've watched this 5 times and still can't believe that car was parked so close to the tornado. What were they thinking? To the idiot below, this was a huge tornado and the media didn't blow anything out of proportion!!!
First off I wasn't talking about the Media... Obviously News 9 did, and always does a great job with keeping people safe especially Val... I was talking about idiots, who go out, with not knowledge of storm chasing, and think they are invincible, and go tape a video of a tornado getting as close as possible, just to make money off of TH-cam... I never once mentioned the media... I was straight up talking about idiots who make us REAL chaser's look like a bunch of idiots.. Obviously any storm chaser who is working for a New's Station is gonna know how close they can get, and everything.... So next time please read my comment fully... Because again I was referring to people who don't chase to protect the citizens.... That is all

I've seen handfuls of tornado videos and the Oklahoma Moore twister was the scariest in my opinion. It moved so slow causing major devastation.

This was some of the most amazing footage of a tornado that I have ever seen. Very sad for the residents of Moore that lost their lives.
Gary is a legend within the Oklahoma weather community.
Classic wedge and you can make out the multiple vortices in the rotation. The debris ball was massive because everything that was picked up stayed in the air for a long time, but the actual tornado was far smaller. As for the 1.3-mile wide peak, that was before it crossed I-44.
Wow, you can really see the violence of this bad boy. So many vids of the Moore tornado are hard to see what is happening, whether cause if the perspiration, or just the chaos is general. So mesmerizing when you can see the force this thing had.

So you were headed north on S Santa Fe Ave and had to stop around SW 28th St? (Not from Moore, had to figure it out from maps) It must have been hitting Briarwood as you filmed and was headed to Plaza Towers :(
Those close-ups were simply AMAZING. It's unusual to see video that shows the violence like this one does. I wish you'd been able to get the sound of that beast.

I am glad I received your FB request to "Like" your FB page, as your FB page also pointed me in the direction of your TH-cam channel and this particular video. So, fortunately, I ended up here, as this video contains more images & commentary than I heard from you while following Channel 9's coverage live on that terrible day.
Well, even though we are almost 21 months removed from this incredible event, I'd like to express my compliments to you both re: your skills as chasers & videographers. You did impressive work! Just as important, you both are consummate professionals and it's clear that while the two of you are fascinated by severe storms & tornadoes, neither of you ever forgot that there are people suffering dearly because of this monster
Although I am sure that, in the moment, you both experienced the same strange mixture of excitement, awe, pride, fear, anger, etc that all chasers feel while having a successful storm chase & getting a prime view of a massive violent tornado, I couldn't help but hear a lot of fatigue & sad resignation in your voice while you informed Gary that the tornado was roping-out. It appears to me that you were already beginning to grieve the likely loss of life & massive destruction that the tornado had caused. IMHO, your mindsets at that moment are a real testament to your honourable motives & respect for the people you serve as an official storm chaser for Channel 9. Kudos to you both!

Man I remember this. I was in town, Cushing, alone with my little ones and my mom asked me to come out to the house. We kept the news on and plus watched outside cause they live about an hour north of the city. We got some of the winds and then it moved through Cushing towards Drumright. That was not a fun day.
Y'all did a good job.
I've seen a lot of tornado videos over the years, but I don't think I've ever seen one get killed by a burst of downward-moving air like that.

That thing was extremely violent, massive, and moving at a Jarrell-like pace. What an absolute catastrophe of a storm. Several suction vortices are often a sign of an extremely violent tornado.
That car looked like it was gonna be history, but made it thru. Nerves in steel I guess. Amazing photography!

No. It isn't. This guy clogged streets from actual meteorologists and gave terrible notes of this weather event. He didn't give good descriptions or directions of where this was heading. Pure adrenaline junkie that needs to stop other professionals from their job.

Loved the final minutes where it "roped-out", then the condensation funnel/vortex dissipated into a "pig-tail"..and vanished! The awesome powers & abilities of Mother Nature!! A lot about tornadic activity is still get to be learned. But, y'know, we're getting there!

Rating the width should be changed in my opinion. I know it’s based of damage but that confuses your average person. It should be based off of actual funnel. The Fujita scale should also be changed. There are tons of tornadoes that never hit anything significant and have had recorded winds over 250mph and have only damaged minor buildings. I think the el Reno tornado was rated ef3 but since it never hit anything significant it was rated ef3. I think the actual wind speed recorded inside the funnel was 300mph.

Yeah, that station typically had multiple chasers in the field each vying for air time, unreliable streaming back to the station, Gary was constantly on the air and so a chaser had to make some noise to get his attention, all in an area with nebulous cell connectivity.

I always feel like the chasers leave their locations too early. Maybe the video doesn’t show how close they are to the tornado when they decide to leave.
