I've been waiting for it to crop up on a list. A lot of these were on Friday evenings and my parents always went out so I basically used to sit watching TV (before pub age) and it was an endless stream of crap sitcoms. I have it on DVD but as much as I like Thaw I'd rather sit and watch the Sweeney instead. Same with never the twain, it's the same trope/episode recycled endlessly. It's also why I hate Watching (the series) with a passion, that and Goodnight Sweetheart.

"Sorry!" Remains one of the great BBC sit coms. Interesting looking back though at a lot of sit coms in that era, particularly on ITV. They were often anchored by stars from the theatrical world (Judy Dench and her husband in "A Fine Romance", Julia McKenzie in "Fresh Fields", Hywell Bennett in "Shelley", and Simon Callow in "Chance in a Million"). Generally speaking, the ITV sitcoms also had supporting casts of very sub par theatrical actors who clearly didn't know you had to dial it down for TV and tended to be very wooden as a result.

'Dear John' was actually pretty good, introducing us to a varied bunch of divorcees trying to restart their social lives with the aid of a weekly support group club meet. An American version was made, (shown in the UK as 'Dear John USA') which wasn't bad either, and shared the club leader character (Jane Carr) with the British series.

I remember some of these pretty well. The number of sitcoms, particularly on ITV, during the 80's was pretty phenomenal. You were almost guaranteed at least one per night, with the weekends being chock-a-block with them. The BBC had their fair share as well. Sorry! Was originally shown on a Thursday night, as I remember, and was, kind of Ronnie C's, answer to Porridge. It did remarkably well and lasted a number of series. Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles seemed to crop up in all matter of shows in the early 80's, at least. Some better than others. I remember the titles of Hot Metal, as the lettering would literally melt into a pool of, presumably, lead. 'That's My Boy!', became part of my Friday night schedule for a while in the latter part of '82. I'd watch The Fall Guy, then That's My Boy, then switch over to watch Cheers! on Channel 4.

Forces TV, before the channel ended, used to show a lot of 70's/80's forgotten sitcoms. There were a three sitcoms that I remember from the early 80's, that I haven't seen since and I wonder if anyone else recalls. The first was Doctor's Daughters which I remember as being awful. The second was Sorry I'm A Stranger Here Myself of which the whole series was confusing for my young brain and there was another which I can't for the life of me remember the title, starring Lesley Ash that had a theme tune by Chas and Dave which sang the plot which went "Nancy is a junior secretary, In an advertising agency..." to the tune of Serenade No.13 in G Major. Please can someone confirm this as I know I haven't dreamt it up. The sitcom was pants and I'm sure it never made another series. Keep up the good work!

I remember Dear John, Ralph Bates was quite good but sadly he died far too early. The bloke in the clip with the bag had an alter ego called Kirk St Moritz. Remember him? He even did a TV ad for Pepsi. "Johnny how come you're such a hit with da goils?"
The yanks did their own version of Dear John but even though it was a straight almost word for word copy as usual when they get their hands on British comedy it doesn't work.
I think the main problem with all these shows is they were too narrow in their outlook. There wasn't much latitude for expansion in the writing. A supermarket, a builder etc. Without the talents of Galton and Simpson (Steptoe) or Clement and Le Frenais (Porridge) Sullivan (Only Fools) and Clark (Summer Wine) and you don't have characters you take to like Fletcher, Delboy and Compo you are on a hiding to nothing. Then again even those writers had their failures.

Dear John was remade in the US, running for 4 seasons on NBC 1988-1992. The American version starred Judd Hirsch. When broadcast in the UK, it was retitled 'Dear John USA'. I remember seeing both versions in Australia, the British original aired on the ABC here while the US remake aired on one of the commercial networks.
And yes, the US remake lasted longer than the British original. And wouldn't be the only time that happened! If I remember correctly, the central character in the US version didn't seem to have the same financial worries and he also seemed to have better luck finding female companionship.

Unfortunately the American series didn't have any of the pathos of the UK one. Judd Hirsch was far too upbeat, but I suppose that's what American audiences like or, at least, what American networks tell the audiences they like.

South Of The Border starred Brian Glover as an overly insular Yorkshire man who moves to the South for some reason. Troubles and Strife might just be the most forgettable sitcom ever made but I remember it cos Tarrant from Blakes 7 played a vicar in it. The Gaffer was on ITV and starred Bill (Selwyn Fogget) Maynard as an Arthur Daley type character.

I loved Hot Metal and both series are currently available for free on the new ITVX platform.
Kit Curran had a memorable theme tune ruined by a talkie bit.
For the Brothers McGregor to run 4 series and having never heard of it is bit a strange for as I recall and watched all of the others mention.
Rather enjoyed The Bounder - been years since I've seen it though and perhaps nostalgia is at play.
Yet again another one of your videos highlights the pitiful output for ITV comedy over the last few years. None of it one the main channel and just left to wither and die on one of the obscure channels.
