Hard to believe that there was actually a time when going to the airport was a fun and exciting event, something we anticipated, looked forward to. Thanks for the video my friend, good stuff indeed! 👍 👍
L1011s, DC-10s, A300s.... back when seeing a heavy jet at LGA was common place. All of those aircraft were designed in part to have very good short field performance. Case in point that Eastern A300B4 using less runway landing than many of the 727s and DC-9s. This is a great video for the historical record. I really miss hearing the cacophony of the PW JT8D back in the day around busy airports. Fond memories. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting this snapshot of aviation history at the LGA observation deck. My sister worked for Eastern Airlines and she would take me to LGA and I would spend the day at the observation deck while she worked. This brings back a lot of memories.
There aren’t many videos on TH-cam that capture the Eastern A300 shuttle in action. So many wide bodies at LGA back in the day! Wow, thank you for this incredibly special footage. I used to sketch these aircraft in a notebook as they flew over my aunt’s apartment in the Bronx when I was a child, this brings back lots of memories.
Ft Lauderdale was same way back in 80's and 90's. L1011, B767, B747 DC-10. They had a sign saying spoil engines before entering runway. 9K foot runway hot and heavy was a chore sometimes
Very enjoyable and informative. Every inch of every building shown here (1982) is now gone. The runways are pretty much the same, though. That same year but in the winter, I flew on a Delta L-1011 from Atlanta to LaGuardia. We landed at night, during a snowfall, with low overcast, on Runway 4. The plane completed rollout and turned off prior to the Runway 13 intersection, a roll of only about 4,700 feet despite the wet, slightly snowy runway. What an amazing airplane and pilot performance.
Pan Am TWA & Eastern. 3 great airlines that are no longer with us. Unfortunately deregulation put them in a weak position & in the case of TWA & Eastern allowed them to be picked apart by the vultures Frank Lorenzo & Carl Ichan. Thanks for this video though it brought back good memories
Excellent footage Chris. This is one of the best classic jets videos I've seen. DC-9's, L1011's, 727's. Eastern, USAir, Republic and JT8D's as far as the eye can see! Thanks and Semper Fi!
I go back and watch this video every now and then. What comes more to mind is not the aircraft of the time, but the airlines that disappeared over the years. Eastern was my most frequent airline since it had the direct flights to West Palm and Fort Lauderdale.
@@chrislauterbach8856 What is amazing is other than Delta and United all of them are gone. Can't remember if there was an AA airliner in the vid. I grew up in Miami very close to the airport where Eastern, National, and Pan Am all had a major presence with maintenance hangers, etc. Now it's all gone.😢
@@58HUSTLER I dragged a Panasonic portable VHS VCR and a wire connected RCA camera to LGA when the observation deck was still open to the public. The video sat in the cassette until I finally uploaded it to YT.
Ahhhhhhh, the observation deck! A long gone thing of the past, sadly....airplane enthusiasts could watch the planes come and go from the observation deck....of course, sometimes you had to cover your ears, could get noisy! 🥰😂😂🥰
What a great video which serves as a valuable aviation time capsule, so many thanks for posting this (brings back so many of my own memories of visiting that deck). Some interesting things to note - this was filmed before Delta's 'new' terminal D on the east end was completed (that opened June 1983, last remnants now currently being demolished) - you can see Delta jets still using central terminal. Video shows rare view of LGA runway 14-32 (see 24:24 - this was a 2,000 ft runway used for certain STOL operations - runway is long gone). Cool shot of Eastern A300 (21:24) most likely flying as the Eastern Shuttle from Boston (as approaches RWY 31 landing from the northeast) - that was an interesting operation with open seating and you could simply hop on the plane and pay for your ticket on the aircraft during the flight. Widebody tri-jets DC10/L1011 (as well as the 'newer' twin jet widebodies 767/A300) were commonplace back then - no problem with the 7,000 foot intersecting main runways. Those 727s were loud and underpowered - I believe a Continental 727 scraped the departure end of RWY13 back in the mid-80's.
Back then portable home VHS recorders and cameras were massive. I parked on one of the side streets to avoid LGA's parking fees and lugged it to the observation deck.
This is precious. Thx. I flew out of there almost a year prior than this 8.18.81 on an American Airlines DC-10 wide body. I remember it like it was yesterday. Great to see all the old airlines and equipment. Cheers.
The video sat in a VHS cassette for decades until I learned video editing and started my TH-cam Channel. I enjoy the responses I continue to receive. So Thank You.
Hi Chris thank you very much for sharing your footage of the planes taking off at LaGuardia in 1982, You did a really great job of filming the planes and LaGuardia,I love seeing footage of any kind of New York City in the late 1970’s through most of the 1980’s,,,
This is wonderful!! Thank you so much for sharing this awesome video. I love all the historical aircraft and engine sounds of this time period, nothing like those JT8D engines! So neat to see PBA flying the Banderantes and YS-11s., and also seeing Pan Am, New York Air, Republic, as well as Air Canada, United, American, TWA, Continental, Air Florida, Piedmont, Empire, Delta, and Eastern. I flew into LGA from EVV on an Allegheny DC-9 30 via PIT in March of 1977, took a New York Airways Sikorsky S61 helicopter over to JFK to connect with a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. What memories!! Thanks again for posting this....just love it!

I didn't want to pay for airport parking, so I found a spot on a local street across the Grand Central Parkway and schelped the portable VCR and video camera to the observation deck.
I flew from LGA on a rainy day to Kalamazoo Michigan in the Summer of 1984. That was on the new USAir via DTW. I was so excited to fly alone for the first time. BTW, I can’t imagine landing an L-1011 at that postage stamp of an airport!
I grew up in Flushing so LGA was the most convenient airport to fly in and out of. Much later in life my folks retired to Florida and I used holiday and vacation time to visit them. I can't remember how many Eastern airline flights I took to West Palm or Ft. Lauderdale.

In later years my parents joined a beach club on the south shore of Long Island. One road leading to it was in the flight path to JFK. My father drove as I watched a Concorde pass directly over us.
Wow. Awesome. I lived on the north shore and was basically on the long final approach for one of the 22 runways, so I'd watch all sorts of planes, including Concordes go over our house.
