I was lucky to see this band on this tour back in 1983 at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia. Absolutely amazing. The perfect backing band for Joni.....I was also lucky to be studying with one of Vinnie's instructors (Gary Chaffee) at Berklee College at the time too. The linear fills and triple stickings that Vinnie plays before the change to the schuffle time feel can be traced back to Gary.
Wow...I remember Elvis singing this song in the mid 50's but This Arrangement and the Great musicians: Vinnie Colaiuta, Michael Landau, Larry Klein, Russell Ferrante and the Great Joni Mitchell made this song "Out Of This World"! Yes indeed...this is Special !!
The dynamic interplay is amazing. I haven’t really seen any current bands that show this kind of sensitivity or prowess while jamming. This is a lost part of the art to me. Vinnie’s work with Holdsworth is fantastic too...
Check out the band for Olivia Newton John's tour in the 80s. Landau, Feiten, Popwell, a bunch of jazz cats just jamming during pop songs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Tour#Personnel
This type of musicianship is dead in the mainstream music which is so robotic and sterile sounding with way too much programming and lack of live musicians. It's all about getting people to dance these days and of course have a Hollywood look so fans can idolize them .
He played primarily matched till around 84-85, when it became "trendy" and he stuck with it till recently. Apparently, he's gone back to matched because of arthritis and other pain. Luckily his playing is exactly the same. ;)
No one needs to play traditional anymore. It's an antiquated way of holding your stick and as most drummers will tell you, over time, it can cause problems with your hand.
No. He started with traditional and then added matched. He still plays traditional primarily but he mostly played matched with Zappa. He switches back and forth as do a lot of drummers.
She loved to do all kinds of music...absolutely did not like to be categorized...she was doing the music she enjoyed creating and or covering. Fans have plenty to choose from...one of the most prolific performers and writers EVER. Let her do what she wants...there is absolutely no room for any criticism...not with a catalog like hers.
Yeah? She got to do whatever she wanted to do. And she was beyond having anyone telling her she needed to do a Rock n'Roll song. And she does it her way .Love this version better than any!
This is incredible i love it. Never saw this ever. Great Band..
beh- behhhh❤
i love that organ… all of it❤❤❤❤

That's cool, I've practiced to Chaffee's books growing up and into college. Good stuff.
Couldn't agree more!
Same here, but in Wisconsin. Wonderful show.
We were at that concert.
What a joy to listen to Vinnie's drumming - Holy shit ...
Seeing what a guy like that can do on a mostly pop/rock song shows how good he is. It's like having free range at an all you can eat buffet.
Coliauta is all over this like a rash - outstanding
Because it's not Vinnie !
Oh...that's Vinnie.
that mid section 💯🔥
sweet & strong… Joni Mitchell!!!!!!!!!❤❤

Love Joni 😍😍😍😍The band of course is killer guys relax. Love you Joni con todo mi corazón ♥️
Vinnie Colaiuta, toda una fuerza de la naturaleza en la batería!

What a band!
So much talent on stage!
The Vinnie fill at 4:09, it sounds like Rllk (x6) , but I could be mistaken. It's so freaking good
gorgeous free flight
sweet and strong Donostia 2021-8-9
So weird to see Vinnie playing matched grip instead of traditional! Great video, thanks for posting!!

@@elmhurst86 It was made for use with marching band drums which sit at an angle. It does not make sense any more.
@@johnstarrett7754 Exactly!
@@autodidacticprofessor869 - He still does play traditional primarily. Depends on the song.
Vinnie!
Also from ... that August 1987 GREAT Concert and ... recording~memory?? !
Mind blowing
….. the best 80ies Project……
Zeets!
As a swede, I must say that this girl looks pretty Norwegian :)
Nice
Russell Ferrante
Not always………💋🔥
The dislikes are from Elvis fans
😂
I'm Elvis fan and I Love it!
True factoid:Joni was married to the bassist Larry Klein.
The backing band is called Dog Cheese.
I wish Dog Cheese would have put out an album. Landau wishes they had also...
They're bigger than Cheeses.. Oh.. Eh.. No.. That was the Beatles..
Singing that well while smoking? My brain hurts.
That 4 pack a day habit really changed (ruined) her voice...but she didn't care. Read her biography "Reckless Daughter" by David Yaffee.
Looking back..! I would say this was a high water mark ... still is years later
Colaiuta started playing match first

"You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care"
Does anyone know which model is Michael Landau using in this video? It doesn’t look like standard strat from the time.
Zeitgeist most likely a super strat which is a modified Stratocaster by Grover Jackson.
That his original 63 Strat modded by Tyler.
Later known as Coma.
Anyone know what concert/tour this is?
It's the Wild Things Run Fast tour for sure. No idea when/where.

Different rendition. I'm a Buddy Holly guy, but give her credit, good
Thats not reallly joni mitchells style.
Cigarette definitely helps her vocal ability, yeah real smart JM.
Love Joni but this type of song is not her thing. She makes It sounds square.

Yeah but she's no Beyonce!
at least Joni writes her own music (usually)
@@corneliusmakin-bird7540 I was being sarcastic and ironic.
:-D
. . . but then, Beyonce's not Joni.
