If I remember right, the agent catches up to him at the end and tells him that someone has to go to jail. So they arrest the rival treasure hunter after Nicolas Cage gives him the declaration of Independence.

The state of Georgia can’t find their copy of the Declaration of Independence. This was reported back in the 1990s.
The last person to have access to the copy was a former government official who was responsible for its safe keeping.
I don’t know if the state ever found the document.

I am pretty sure he cut a deal to give up the people who originally tried to steal the declaration, left him and his friends and his father to die down there, and agreed to give up all the treasure to various museums and return the declaration, which was unharmed.
Its ore than likely that they'll simply print out another one ... and keep adding modified amendments like the 16th and 13th.
To be fair, it helped that Nick happened to be a good guy and there were actual criminals who were going to do worse.
His actions wouldn't have changed anything.
Plus, he did end up proving there was more history to it AND he found a treasure and ended up giving them a huge chunk of money.

Its also federal documentation along with it being in a federal facility in an area youre not supposed to be in unless you have a clearance level badge with the government itself. Ovwrall not a good choice to even do so as all that can add up and you might not get out for a couple of decades.
