Lyrics:
Bury the bells
Between two mountains
The big trees on the other side
With illuminated leaves shout
I can say nothing
You've been uprooted
It's time to take another road
I will
Kiss the mouth of reality's face
I will
Annihilate my hiding place
I will
Fade into the rising smoke
I hear the lion's roar
Animals are something invented by plants
To move seeds around
An extremely yang solution
To a peculiar problem, which they faced
Now i must take their medicine
I will
Sharpen the stone on the angel's tongue
And wield
A blow to unreality's front
Illusions
Flow out from this mortal wound
As I wake to the sound of the lion's roar
The lion's roar
And from your throat
You sing to me your secrets
A proclamation
That everything, everything is workable
No resistance
A pathway to the heart
In you i know
How i am born
(Solo)
I hear the lion's roar
-Cynic's New Song Evolution-
First Listening: what the hell is this song? Focus, Traced in Air blahblahblahblah...
Second Listening: meh...that's not too bad, it's simply different.
Fifth Listening: This is simply too good for my ears!
Seventh Listening: OHMYGOOOD! Cynic made it again!
Tenth Listening: AAAAANIMAAAALS ARE SOMETHING INVENTED BY PLAAANTS!!
They sure did it again
nice one :)
This song touched me in places I didn't know I had.
*Animals were invented by plants to carry seeds around*
New Cynic is Aeon Spoke with a progressive metal edge. Not *that* different to the old ones, just warmer, less edgy, less jazzy, and no more death growls (very much expected). Still great taste in melodies and eargasmic bass lines. Simple but yet complex.
Can't wait to listen to the whole album of course!
Stop comparing the new Cynic to Aeon Spoke, this is FALSE and completely out of the subject. Who compares old Cynic with the new stuff or with Aeon Spoke did not understand the principle of this unique band which is the experimentation, evolution and creativity. They never want to repeat themselves and you don’t understand it. Since the beginning Cynic has a goal called innovation, if you compare their cd’s, it means that you don’t understand their evolution.
FIRST: You are stuck in the past. SECOND: You are talking like if it came out right after Aeon Spoke which is FALSE. Between "Kindly Bent to Free Us" and Aeon Spoke’s albums there are 2 Cynic albums (!) which are an obvious melodic evolution of Focus, more melodic, less jazzy and deeply poetic. The death growls are over since... 1993 ! Wake up! THIRD: that sound has nothing in common with Aeon Spoke which is a post rock project where they didn't even use distortion sound on guitars, or the same drum kit. There is nothing in common, NOTHING, not even the prod or the sound, between Cynic and Aeon Spoke except the clean vocals, which is normal due to the fact that the same human being in singing in both bands right ?! Cynic today is still...CYNIC! There are 90% of common ingredients with Focus, despite the interval between Focus and Traced in air, they are still Prog/psychedelic/tribal/ /jazz-fusion/ like they did 20 years ago. Today the only difference concerns the lake of growl vocals and the jazz breaks, all the rest is still there, common to all the albums, still alive, in every single note played by Cynic. This band is always fresh with raw melodies and full of energy. Cynic is truly a band that can go for any sort of a genre and still sound great and also be innovative.
Sed CH. dude, chill out, we're on the same team. I *love* everything Paul Masvidal has ever done, including Portal, Aeon Spoke and all the different incarnations of Cynic.
Traced in Air still had growling vocals in (almost) all the songs, Carbon Based Anatomy was an EP, not an album, and one song from each of those was a revamped Aeon Spoke song in truth (Integral Birth = When Sunrise Skirts the Moor, Carbon Based Anatomy = Homosapien).
But it's ok, they're the same 2 guys with different people alongside each time. No matter how they're called, I can feel it's them, and more so when they meet with Sean Malone (I wish he'd tour, as well) in each recording labeled Cynic. All this is just describing my feeling and thoughts about the music, but it's relative and it's ok if you don't feel the same way. It's great music and we both love it.
Sed CH. I think you win overreaction of the year.
You quoted a part of my favourite lyric of the song, Ivano. I mean, I love the whole song, but Masvidal's lyrics have always been amazing. Weird and arty, but full of cosmic meaning. There is references to all of ecology, New Age and Chinese folklore in that verse.
thanks Tranxhead , I agree wholeheartedly :) Cynic makes the music of Everything
"I wish Cynic would just stick to playing psychedelic/tribal/shoegaze/jazz-fusion/prog rock/thrash/death like they did TWENTY years ago" - cause that wouldn't get boring...
Damn, I love Cynic fans! If any other band were to make this drastic of a change the fans would loose their shit in the comment section. Y'all understand that most bands progress musically and you guys embrace Cynic for that. \m/
The gift we call impermanence.
bass line is just outstanding.
I thought the lyrics in the beginning were a bit forced. But everything else was just how I wanted it to be. I love cynic.
Yes yes, getting more and more closer to Aeon Spoke. Perfect mix of the two.
You changed my perspective on music as a whole with your every album. RIP Sean Malone and Sean Reinert😢
I'm splitted... Old Cynic is amazing, probably one of the greatest music ever made in my opinion, fav band. I like new cynic, this is good, but so different, it's more aeon spoke stuff for me. So I really don't know how to think about it... I have to listen more than one time and I'm waiting the album.
But I love you guys, you brought so awesome music in this world, the only think we can do, even if we don't like the new stuff, is to thank you.
ps : sorry for my bad english.
At first listen I was a bit disappointed, but after having it on repeat for 2 days straight, I can't stop listening...I love focus, tia and cba and now I can't wait for this album, mad props to Cynic, this is going to be one of the best releases of 2014.
very very excited for the new album
CYNIC!!! Dont stop doing this! Great work
My 18th birthday is on the 14th of February, what a great gift this album will be!
absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!!!!
When I first heard this like a decade ago, I thought it sounded a bit generic and poppy.
Today, I truly believe this is one of the greatest songs of all time.
I Just love the optimizm in this song and in Cynic in general lately
Wow, this really gets alot better after a couple of listens
Yes indeed
Wow, I thought this was an instant hit.
its nice to hearing them still experimenting after all these years! love it!
Glorious
В конце песни самая уникальное соло, сочетание максимализма и минимализма! Аж башню сносит
This has been shared on facebook so much by people I follow. Its freaking everywhere!
I never wait so much for a music album *-* Can't wait for a world tour and please come to Chile :DDDD
luv the bass
In my opinion, Cynic has had a more dynamic evolution than the mighty Dream Theater. These guys can do it all, and I know i will love it. haha.
Whhhhooooooooo, so awesome!
Awesome song!
Ma, I loved this!!!!!!!!!! instantly in love
Taking it at face value, its a great song and i really like it. Loving the progressive vocal trem. on "face" and "place". I do think death growls would have nicely contrasted the upbeat feel of this song though. Can't wait to hear the album either way!
wonderful
I can finally hear the bass on a cynic song.
again, cause you can really listen to it in Focus, and some songs in re-traced
AMAZING!
The sound is an evolved one. Noticeably.
awesome song! although i like old cynic, the new one is unique~
I cant wait for the release, is one of the best song so far this year!
I like! For me it´s evolution, besides the Metal songs have more power, to me this is new, fresh, and inspiring. The same feeling that I have when heard 'Focus' fo the first time! AWESOME!
This is just incredible!
This is so fucking good.
Brilliant as always!
i like this better than the Opeth new style
They're leaving their Extreme style of music, particularly leaving behind the growling... I will miss the Old Cynic...
But this new aproach in their music sounds really refreshing and amazing... I can't wait to get this album!!!
Me being very inspired by cynic. Im happy to see a new album coming out again. This reminds me of the portal tapes a lot ill admit.
there the reason i started a solo project under my last name being influenced by cynic/Exivious/Aghora. Etc. Etc. and i really hope this will take off one day.
The only difference is i have a more classical style to my sound but when it comes to my solos it has that old school death sound.
That is all.
Cynic is light.
Cynic and Aeon Spoke are two very different entities trying to express different things. After having years out of the game, i think Cynic are free to meander away from their older vibe if they so wish. People clinging on to a return of Focus really should be aware that Cynic arent a bunch of 21 years olds anymore... sorry kids :L
Una maravilla de tema. Por cierto, nunca entenderé como hay gente que dice que esto tiene toques de jazz. Esto no tiene nada que ver con el jazz, el jazz es otra historia..
I hope the final production will have better sound quality
Bass tone. Sean Malone.
They must have been so high when they wrote this.
AAAhahahahaha!!!
I was kind of disappointed ! But why am I still pressing replay for the 20th consecutive time ?
cynicdocumentary, PLEASE PUT A SEIZURE WARNING AT THE BEGINNING
I'm not sure I'm feeling this album so far.
Dio mio
UOCHSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
6/8 5/8
The song is cool but the production is throwing me off a bit. Not trying to sound cocky but I honestly feel like I could've mixed this better... which is weird for someone as legit as Cynic
This sound quite like stoner... I mean the sound, even if some riffs too. It's a strange mix.
@cynic Damn, I don’t even remember making this comment lol. This album grew on me so much 😄
I like it but it's not as good as Carbon Based Anatomy in my opinion.
I don't really like this.
I thought the lyrics in the beginning were a bit forced. But everything else was just how I wanted it to be. I love cynic.
I honestly don’t understand people calling this Aeon Spoke or Pop, or stuff like that. Music, just like life itself, it’s about evolution, experiment with different things, it’s about moving on and never get stuck in the same time-space, and that’s what Cynic’s been doing with all their releases, their music is a synonym of life. For those who are expecting a new Focus or a new Traced in Air or a “Metal” album, just get over with it once and for all, cause you’ll never get it. Cynic, to begin with, to me, was never a metal band, they were (and still are) an “Experimental music” band that borrowed some elements from metal and mixed them with elements from other music genres. If you want to hear a “Focus” kind of music you can listen to the new several bands coming out all around the world inspired by that album, or if you want to listen to the same stuff all your life there’s a lot of bands that always do the same thing that you can listen to. Don’t expect Cynic to be like “Keanu Reeves”, you know what I mean?, doing the same stuff always, they’ll just do beautiful music and that’s it, don’t label Cynic’s music, just feel it. This song is great.
Very true, this is the meaning of the progressive genre after all, progressing and changing ones sound over time.
listen to this and enjoy it :)

Sean Malone should play on every recording by every band. I can never get enough!
Guys, you do all realize that this video suffers from awful TH-cam compression?
I love this band, but I miss the old "metal" Cynic lol
Old Cynic is amazing, New Cynic is amazing, they are just different
R.I.P. Sean Malone. You were one of the most amazing players to grace the planet. Such a brilliant tune and brilliant album.
Cant believe it, i saw this comment and thought you were refering to sean reinert, but man i just checked and sadly you are right
I understand why some people are somewhat shocked by this, or don't really enjoy it, but I think a lot of people feel like this for the wrong reasons. Cynic have been changing and progressing for more than 20 years now, and will continue to do so, no album of theirs is the same, so anyone who expects this album to sound the same as Focus or Traced In Air will always be disappointed. AND this is only one song! For all we know, the rest of the album might sound COMPLETELY different. I personally really like this song, I love the upbeat sound, the lyrics, and I think the bass sounds amazing. Might I add, Paul is sounding as gorgeous and ethereal as ever.
Not bad. Somewhat of a change of tone, but I kind of like it. Looking forward to more.
I was ready for the worst after reading the initial comments, and upon first listen I was ready to hate it. Instead, I have played this about 20 times without getting bored. I really like that Cynic don't care about rules and genres, but just make music they like playing
Sean Malone ladies and gentlemen. Can't wait for the full album!
Interesting song... but the mix is strange for me! I prefer the guitar tones from Traced in Air.
Sean Malone, Tony Levin, Steve Digiorgio, fretless bass monsters
Cynic keep changing and progressing and I simply love it.
Cynic is incapable of making bad music.
Been following Paul and Sean from Chucks Death human cd. This song is Awesome. There wasn't even double kick and the guitars distortion gets more tone oriented than screaming heavy chugness. You have look for the aggression elsewhere like on Carbon Based . Very excited for the new sounds.
Sean Malone went nuts on this. Great lyrics .
With every Cynic release past TiA, I go "WTF?!?! I hate this." Then it slowly grows on me. Took a long time for CBA. I'm hoping that this will too, but man, not feeling it at all right now.
HOLY AWESOME.... as always :D
I love this song. Wow.
When he sings "I hear the lions roar", it totally reminds me of The Hunter
I don't understand how people have to split this into "Aeon Spoke" and "Cynic" when both bands are comprised of the same people. It's the same individuals so I wouldn't catalog it any different.
seems the first cynic song in major key.
much prefer the music from the portal tapes.
Yeah, nobody seems to agree with me that the portal tapes were really good and I would definitly like another album like the portal tapes.
I absolutely love that album, too bad there are no posted lyrics and everyone gets the song names mixed up.
Truly a band that can go for any sort of a genre and still sound great and also be innoative. That's great! Can't wait for the full album!
I love main riff, although the chorus is giving me mixed feelings. I almost feel as though I'm frolicing through a field of daisies. Is that odd?? Either way, excited to hear more!!!
I liked it, I feel like something is missing though. I'm not talking about the growls but the futuristic feeling their other stiff gives me. Oh well, maybe the album in its whole will change that
Puta que es bueno Cynic!!
fucking great !!!!!!
Heard this song somewhere in Japan in 2017. I'm glad I did.
hippie-metal! i like it
I really enjoyed this song for what it is. And if the ending is a segue to the next song, I really want to hear THAT song.
I absolutely love the Terance Mckenna quote in the middle of this song.
Very profound.
Which lyric is it exactly ?
So gooood. I didn't care much for Carbon-Based Anatomy, but this is great.
Liked the old Cynic better, but still gonna like the hell out of the new one.
YES. I miss the death admittedly, but still a wholehearted YES!
Fantastic lion vid, looking forward to seeing more...
good music indeed.
I play this on bass and is awesome! Sean was best!
where´s the cookie monster?
Want more!
Brilliant!! Amazing!!!
