- In the 1980s, Divine ( born Harris Glenn Milstead, 1945-1988 ) released several dance music records which were club hits in the USA, Europe and Australia.
This Pete Waterman produced song "You Think You're A Man" was Divine's most successful U.K. hit, reaching #16. The song was also a Top 10 hit in Australia, reaching #8.
Here you can find my re-edited 12" version of the funny video, with all the lyrics of that amazing club classic. Hope you'll enjoy it !!!
It was my privilege to record his vocal on this track. I was 16 years of age, the last apprentice at Marquee Studios. I was wearing 26" waist white Levie's and this shy gentelman sang this song to me, in one take! Bless him, We had been working for 5 days, production crew, Phil Harding, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman and me Rob Waldron (grandson of Jack Simpson). It still stands as an art piece

He was a vary good female impersonator (making a parody of people who then turned it up so high it burred the boundaries of reality and extreme perception) "Art" and an excellent character actor.

I remember seeing Divine in concert in 1984. I was 16. Met him backstage after. He was amazing. Great actor and performer. Died too soon. They don't make drag Queens like Divine anymore. When he was on Top of the Pops on BBC TV there were thousands of complaints so he was banned. Its a different world today. .
He was always a Gentleman. Every interview, even though he had the piss taken out of him, Divine always had class. Some day a movie will be made of him and what he went through and his struggles well before the net, and what the locals thought of him in the island he lived on (they loved him BTW) RIP you were so ahead of your time.

If you have a seen "Pink Flamingos " Edie the egg lady was in it sitting in a playpen, she had a store in Fells Point Maryland and was a kind and extraordinary Lady! When she passed away, they held her wake in Fells Point and I attended. One of my most prized possessions is a Autographed picture of my favorite director John Waters to me. I was a teen during the 80s. When I look back at that period I am always amazed on what freedom there was back then. Although I was 13 when Divine became famous I loved her songs. Me being a kid I really hadn’t got a clue the she in reality was a man in drag. I also liked Boy George, he was not really dressed in drag but his ensemble was quite remarkable. Glenn Milstead was one of those talented people that had to leave us much to soon.

Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos brought me here (Trasharama every Saturday night on Kast for the best grindhouse experience). Divine was ahead of her time so has to be considered a trailblazer. Wasn't sure if I'd like these movies and still not sure if 'enjoy' is the right way to describe it but I definitely feel the experience was culturally significant. RIP Divine, many have tried to emulate but few succeed.
