Cedar Strip Teardrop Camper build

- This camper took one year of weekends to build. 600 hours and just under 5k in cost. The original plans came from teardropbuilder.com. I changed the galley and some cabinets from the original plans. I added a battery box and used cedar strips, fiberglass and spar varnish for the exterior. Fully loaded it weighs 1360lbs.
As a builder of kayaks and experience with fiberglass I will say you’ve done an outstanding job on this build. Makes me want to start a new project!
Doing hardwood floors my boss would say to keep the different shades random to break it up, but I like making it look like a big peice of wood like y'all did.

Mike, amazing teardrop! I absolutely love the shape and cedar strip construction. I am in the process of starting mine. Yours is the closest I have found to my vision.
Hello, I should do a two years later video. I've changed a few things, fixed a few as well. Go to Teardropbuilder.com and look at the Wyoming woody. for the next project you do, you should film your work! people love woodworking videos, some especially 'cause of the sound. its like an ASMR thing for some.

I didn't start this project to make a channel or video. It was only afterwards, from encouragement, that the video became a thing. I will film my next project. I think I will build matching two person kayak this winter, to go on top of the camper. Thanks.
Great build Mike! One to be proud of. I have built a cedar strip canoe and two stitch and glue kayaks and your work incorporates many of the same technics.This winter I will be building a trailer sauna using left over cedar strips for the outside skin.
Thank you. This was my first (only) fiberglass project. I bought my resign and compass Ross from a well known online boat building site. I hope to make a matching canoe some day. As the wife and I recently moved out of the city. I need to build out my shop first. I'm excited for that as before I only had a garage.

Just weighed it. Fully loaded it was 1360 total. 1240 axil only, 120 tongue.

Hi Mike, may I ask how did you make the plywood thickness size as illustrated in page C5 and C6 is 3/4. You were able to put 1/4 at the inner side and 1/2 on the top all together in 3/4 plywood. Did you use a router to reduce the size make that sidewall portion thinner?
I used a router and guide to cut out 1/4" of the 3/4 plywood. I used resin, with no fiber, on this portion to weather proof it. This cut out section will never be assessable once assembled. This rests on the frame of the trailer, and the top cut out has the interior celling resting on it.
Great! 😀Big help Mike. Thank you so much. With regards to the fiber glass cloth/epoxy resin coating on outside skin, you were able to show the grain/natural pattern of Cedar wood. How many layers of fiber cloth did you use? In Manila, most of the stores are selling only 2 oz gauge of fiber. I hope that you will still have time to reply to my future inquiries. Thanks again👍🏽
@@rommelabesamis581 I used only one layer of 6oz fiberglass. I ordered it online at 60 in wide. I believe it was a total of 13 yards. I put a total of 3 layers of epoxy and 5 coats of spar varnish. Sanding between them all. Thanks

@@toddmallory2506 Hello, first I am new to fiberglass, so check my advise, I am a newbie. This is my first/only fiberglass project. I used 6oz fiber cloth with epoxy first, sand, second epoxy, sand, third epoxy, sand, first varnish, sand, 2nd, sand, 3rd, sand, 4th, sand, 5th. I don't think you need 5 layers, but I kept getting dust bumps in the finish. You can see in some of those pics, I turned my garage into a paint booth to stop the dust. This really helped with the dust. You can actually see my reflection while taking pics in the final coat. Thanks. Mike
Hi longtime teardrop lover. Where did you get your cedar strips.
Originally I was going to purchase them. I did not because the shipping was more than I could buy cedar boards locally. I ended up making them myself. A bead and cove bit set was 40$ on Amazon. I bought 4 1x12x8 cedar boards from a local lumber yard. These were for the sides. I was very selective about getting as few knots as possible. After not finding any more boards at that lumber yard I sourced three different home depots and bought 8 1x4x6 for the top and hatches of the camper. I cut all these boards to 1/4 in strips, than bead and coved them all. It probably did save me some money, but cost me a lot of time. Thanks. Mike

Music selection is unbearable
You could mute it or turn down the volume if you dont like the music, I bet you're the kind that's on your phone during a fireworks display. I had the pleasure of meeting the creators of this trailer in travels and got to admire the trailer in person. Bravo on the build, its beautiful
