    Ok I think I need to be clear on this topic. As an engineer I have to say that there is absolutely no benefit to having the through-wire be able to spin. The fishing line will certainly twist, if the the fish spins the lure, since there is much greater friction and inertia in the lure than the line. I took this little challenge on just for the satisfaction. The physics just doesn't add up but I do like the way the eye twists are buried in the body.
    If you are having trouble finding the link to the wire bending tool video in the description: Making the wire twist tool: th-cam.com/video/KJY0aU19ujI/w-d-xo.html

    Super cool handling of the problem. 10/10
    Paint job - Very Floridian! Lol. 8/10
    Action - Unknown ( no footage of lure in action only closeups )
    Videography - 9/10 your water shots were amazing.

    Maybe a micro popper would be cool. Nothing fancy maybe couple different paint themes. Maybe one with the nose art from a old plane.

    I believe the benefit over having the wire wraps exposed is that when they are buried they have less flex and therefore won't bend over and over causing th wire to weaken and eventually break.

I always thought it was an interesting design. They work great for lake trout if you can keep them tuned. Thanks for the great content. Keep up the good work.

    Those are often used in the North East for Striper in the surf. Most of time they are weighted further back to sit head out of the water………so it floats kind of like a bottle. I think the main idea in that type of tail wrapped thru wire is to be able to change out the wire if it snaps. In the old days, 50 lb Striped Bass from the beach was a real thing.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the wire snaps the lure is gone...and the fish. The tail down posture I think is a result of trying to make a lure that will cast really far...so tail heavy.

    So... it's a "spin lure", but it doesn't spin on retrieve?

  • @striperhunter-ic2wt
    @striperhunter-ic2wt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think that popper throws enough water. It would be great for stripers on the northeast coast. I'm curious the advantage of the head spinning? I get the belly and tail to minimize leverage from a big fish.
    Thanks

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The more I think about it I wonder if the previous builder used some kind of special double bearing style swivels. This way you would not need to cut the lure in to sections. Hmm

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe, but that would take some precision fabrication.

    It's an interesting challenge but personally I don't see the point for the through wire to be free from the lure body not to mention the potential for decay or waterlogging in the exposed cavity. The belly hook does make sense and I've made a couple with heavy duty stainless steel swivels where I waterproofed (amap) by imbedding half the swivel with epoxy, granted it's not as free as could be mounted inside a section of tubing, but it does at least swivel. I think my solution would build on your solution by inserting the wire in a tube capped with the rivets (kudos Franco) using the traditional outside wrap for the terminal hook connection and just using a SS through pin to hold the belly swivel inside a separate tube. Both tubes to be installed with epoxy to make the internal body waterproof. (Order of operations not as stated obviously.)

      All good ideas....at some point I just throw my hands up and say ..."if it rots I'll make another one!"

    • @surfcat2051
      @surfcat2051 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EngineeredAngler I wouldn't worry about it rotting. I have made dozens of thru wired poppers that I use for striped bass in the surf. I heat the plug in the microwave for a short time then pour epoxy down the thru wire hole then use a pipe cleaner to make sure it covers all surfaces. The heat allows the epoxy to penetrate more. Seal the exterior with epoxy as well the paint then clear coat. Never had a problem been doing it that way over 20 years.

      @@EngineeredAngler one time i was night fishing throwing a Lucky13 and the lure broke off on a cast. the next thing i hear all of this LOUD splashing from the general direction of where i had cast towards. too dark to see the fish but it sounded big as hell.
      anyway, i hope she was able to spit it since it didn't have a spinning through-wire. i went back during the day to see if i could see the lure floating anywhere, but i never found it just like all of the others i have broken off there. / =

    You may or may not see this as this video has several months of age.
    Let me start by saying I enjoy your content immensely. I'm no professional engineer but I do have a scientific background and seeing you perform calcs for how much lead or finding density of a wood may seem like overkill to some, but I like it.
    Your video quality was great and your voice isn't boring to listen to so as you are explaining your builds, I don't drift off like back in my college days in lecture halls of hundreds.
    I do NOT have salt water experience however if you or anyone else can explain this to me, I'd appreciate it. Why the free turning hook in the center of the bait? My guess is that so a large aggressive fish such as a striper can't get leverage with such a large bait and twist itself free? Yes I can Google this too, but this is a fishing channel and I enjoy discussing fishing so....
    Keep the videos coming, and I'll keep watching!

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You got it absolutely right. The spinning lure avoids the fish being able to more easily shake the lure off and protects the lure and hook from harm.

    Hey, why not sink the wood in the varnish and vacuum it? That should get the varnish into the wood. Then maybe just blow off the excess to clear the hole and wipe the rest down. Seems like it would work.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That will certainly saturate the wood. And maybe even make it so it doesn't float very well.. But at the very least it'll be difficult to get all of that varnish to set.
