Mount Etna Volcano Update; 2,000 Foot High Lava Fountains, Flights Cancelled

  • The Mount Etna volcano just produced its first major eruption of 2024, with this occurring on July 4th and 5th. Over the span of several hours, towering lava fountains were created, sending lava fountains up to a height of 2000 feet into the air. This paroxysm occurred alongside heavy ash emissions, causing ash and lapilli to rain down on the city of Catania and causing 90 flights to be cancelled. While this paroxysm is now over, additional and potentially larger explosions and lava fountains could occur in the next several days to weeks.

I started getting volcano videos in my feed after watching something about Campi Flegrei. I like this channel as the thumbnails are not clickbaits and the videos are factual and not calling every eruption a catastrophe. While living in the shadow of a volcano seems scary when you've never been nowhere near one, I'm sure Etna's behavior is business as usual for Sicilians.

I wanted to ask if you could bring up the subject of the Syrian-African rift, since for example the Golan Heights located in Israel is full of volcanic history that has disappeared and apparently there should have been a continuation of the volcanic activity due to the proximity of the rift in the area, why then did the activity stop from taking place and even more from the fact that we see a lot of movement in the plates in the area with earthquakes in Turkey and Syria - and in the same matter if you could bring up the issue of the Israeli ridge line which is actually a line of volcanic ridges that stretch from the south to the north of the country that used to be volcanic

You might want to take a look at the Bolaven volcanic field which has been identified as the probable site for the youngest large meteor impact 790,000 years ago. The crater itself based on gravity/density anomaly analysis appears to be around 17 kilometers across but has been completely filled in/ buried by lava but scientists were able to identify its location through indirect means most notably the ejecta blanket including large ejected blocks of material as well as the broadly distributed Australasian tektite field with the chemistry of those tektites suggesting part of their composition is due to hitting basaltic target rock. In essence Earth is big enough and old enough that this isn't a hypothetical. In general I would imagine the type of volcano in question matters more specifically in how things would play out this is after all just a basaltic volcanic field full of monogenic vents rather than a centralized edifice. Still the eruptions that followed the impact must have been quite a sight!

@grosa , the oceans are made up of abyssal plains, please look this up for details, use any search engine. Then look at a diagram online of this abyssal plain and you’ll see flat water above and not curved. I’m suggesting this man does a video showing how the earth is a ball of 28,000 miles and is made up of mostly flat ocean!

Paroxysms generally happen every year on Etna, but prior to this one most had been taking place at the SE Crater. The last Voragine paroxysm occurred in 2015, and the last Voragine eruption occurred in 2020.

I feel like Mt. Etna needs to be classed as a new eruption style, an Etnean eruption, characterized by frequent paroxysms, tall lava fountaining, and substantial lava flows. Of course, it is closely related to a Strombolian style, but far more vigorous than what Strombolian eruptions tend to pull off. Lava fountains upwards of 1km seem to be a very rare occurrence with somewhat different mechanisms to the typical much more gentle Strombolian activity.

Aloha Geologists of the World. I'm on Kauai Hawaii and I have a question about the final resting place of some boulders. Also, the boulders are on a steep grade and 200' from the ocean to the top. Under the boulders is a material that is very brittle and looks like sand when crushed but more greyish and if you dig below the boulders and softer material you find nothing but red dirt. I'm truly baffled. Here's a few photos. I have thousands more if anyone is interested.
