I am wondering what would be considered a prolonged fast vs. an intermittent fast. Would a 40-48 hour fast be considered an intermittent fast or a prolonged fast?

      We as fasting experts can only share scientific evidence and observations, but to understand the feelings and the state you are in during fasting, you must experience it yourself. 😊 Our fasting method includes not only water, but also fresh vegetable and fruit juices, as well as soups and tea with a little bit of honey.

    I come to fasting from the low carb/keto/carnivore world. You can activate the energy switch simply by greatly reducing carbohydrates. Your liver produces all the glucose you need. You do not need to eat any. I am a fat burner constantly producing ketones in my fully fed state. I have a 25 year history with this. So when I start an extended fast, I am way ahead of the game.

    Thanks for this. I really enjoyed it. I have been doing the annual Ramadan fast for 50+ years (which, of course, meant in some years, 30 continuous days of 15 hours a day dry fasting). And I have done as much as 11 days of continuous 24 hour/day fast intaking only bearly sweetened (with honey) lemon water. I do believe fasting is the best medicine.

    • @brittpayne7198
      @brittpayne7198 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ABDB85 i can answer your question how to make it thru safely. I fasted last summer for 20 days and i wouldve easy carried on for who knows how long, but it became socially unacceptable around me. I myself implemented cole robinsons snake diet. ( youtube) he says to add the same salts tha hospital i.vs have) as your main source of water intake everyday. Cuz u cant just go without nutrients. So...you have 1 teaspoon bicarbonate electrolyte( baking soda), half teaspoon epsom salt( magesium), half teaspoon pink himilayan salt( over 85 minerals), and lastly a product called " no salt" which is potassium chloride( 1 teaspoon). Add ot to 2 litres of water, drink it all day! Thats it! Your body needs these. Food , it does not need, but nutrients from food are these things. I lost twenty pounds, and after i stopped,my metabolism stayed in burning mode for a year. Then, i started putting on weight again, so now im on day 4 of my fast this year, and i feel awesome. First few days are rough cuz of meal habits. But soon..you have TONS of energy, you cant even think about coffee or it might fly you to the moon. So.yeah..check out snake diet. I originally found him when someone recommended me like i am to you, cuz i had severe allergies. This cured my allergies within days.

    I follow dr. Nun-Amen-Ra’s protocol, which consists of a daily 23 hour fast with 1 hour eating window. It’s a totally vegetarian meal, with a protein, essential amino acids and multi mineral supplement at the beginning of the meal. The meal is always in the evening, after the daily resistance training and subsequent meditation session. The day starts with a 30 minute walk and a meditation session. This is a daily practice. Beautiful, it is very inspiring to hear your story and current lifestyle. Also with the integration of spirituality. I am 27y old and I am struggling with the negativity in my social field when I show up with my OMAD lifestyle. It is really uplifting to hear Francoise be so calm and positive, all I hear from the people around me is that it is really dangerous and that I am surely going to develop this or that disease due to this lifestyle. They apparently don't get that I have delved very deeply into the topic of my nutrition and made it quite good. My blood works are always amazing, I am managing to build strength and muscle, yet apparently nothing you do will satisfy the people who just think otherwise... Very sad. I hope everyone stays strong and finds their people who share the same ideals.

    I used to drink alcohol alot never thought I'd give that up, ever since I got injuried I needed to lose some weight, after my surgeries werent completely successful to avoid tkr as I am far to young (30) for the surgery. Then I found fasting, I used to always tell my friends your crazy. Then I tried it and the weight just fell off, it's made a hugh change in my life, I hardly get inflammation, keeps my arthritis at bay, my energy levels are high. I still struggle with certain pain I wish the prolong fasts could regenerate my cartilage tissue but its to far gone. I can fit my old clothes again to its wonderful. One thing I find with fasting since I'm training my muscles is I need to have good protein alot of vitamins and add salt with my water otherwise I get fatigued and get to dizzy and faint.

    I need some advice please. Been IF for 6 weeks. 16:8 it's ok. But if I reduce my food intake then I get headaches and a funny feeling in my chest. When I tried 24 Hour fast I struggled and had to eat at 21 hours, same odd feeling like before. In the past I've tried Keto three times and failed as had similar feeling, heart swimming in chest, feeling massively underpowered and not right in general.
    I'm beginning to become familiar with this feeling and think once my glycogen runs out my body has a hard time making the switch.
    Is it possible that some people just can't make the switch or should I just keep going. Can it take some people many months, years even to get there?

      Hi there and thank you for your question. Breaking a fast is very crucial for determining whether the fast was a success or not. Continue drinking plenty of water and herbal teas. Mid-morning you break the fast by eating an apple or a small bowl of stewed apple together with two filberts or cashews. Midday you may eat either 250 ml of vegetable broth or 250ml freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juice. For dinner, you can make a carrot or potato soup. Overall, it is important to slowly transition out of the fast, in terms of eating but also the activity level you engage in. Hence, allow yourself at least 3 building-up days.

    Very interesting. I am new to intermittent fasting, so there is much to learn. I just started my first 36-hour fast, and I am excited about it. I am on day 65 of my long term fast. I take supplements like daily vitamins, nutritional yeast, electrolyte powder, Magnesium powder, B12, D3, an Omega 3 capsule and take some Redmond's salt at work. Dr. Goldhamer is too strict in fasting. Personally, people go to his clinic to be monitored. Generally, most fast at home. I think he is extreme and a fanatic. There is nothing to prove and so far I have lost 70 pounds and feel good. Doing a long term fast without supplements is foolish in my opinion. What do you want to accomplish by fasting? Weight loss? Spiritual reasons? Health? Start with short fasts and over time, you can build up to longer fasts. The body adapts.

I was eating once a day for 2 months (healthy meal with no suggar, no flour, no bread), and times to times once every 2 days. i remember i lost 9 kilo per month. So i guess yes he can. But trust me even without doing fasting (i dont eat breakfast btw), cutting suggar, and eating max 30 gr of glucid per day, he will already lose weight. I also did this routine 2 years ago for 4 months (losing weight wasn't the goal) after watching the film/documentary suggar land (maybe you should tell him to watch) and surprisingly i lost lot of weight.

      From a medical viewpoint, fasting makes sense for treating various metabolic diseases such as hyperlipidemia(excess fat in the blood), diabetes mellitus type 2 or metabolic syndrome. It is also indicated for obesity, in particular for patients who want to change their lifestyle permanently. Fasting has also been proven to have a beneficial effect on chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or joint disorders like osteoarthritis. Irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, fibromyalgia syndrome and many other diseases can also be influenced by fasting. Indications we treat:

      According to the fasting method of our founder Dr. Otto Buchinger, you can also take in teas, juices, and soups, besides water. Our scientific studies show that it boosts your energy and does not break the fast.

      The human body requires around 2-3 days to adjust its metabolism to fasting. This is followed by a fasting period lasting several days to several weeks, depending on the patient’s indication and constitution. At the end of the fast comes the refeeding phase. The longer you fast, the longer this refeeding phase should be. A typical length of stay for therapeutic fasting at BuchingerWilhelmiis between two and four weeks. In individual cases, it can make sense to fast for a considerably longer time. Our doctors will discuss with you how long you should ideally fast when you arrive, or, if you prefer, in advance.
      Apart from the recommended period, is there such a thing as a minimum length of stay for fasting?
      To undergo therapeutic fasting in our clinics, you should come for a minimum of ten days. That is the time you need for a digestive rest day before you fast, for the fast itself, and for the refeeding phase after breaking your fast. If you would like to get to know our clinics, give your digestive system a rest or take advantage of our other activities while enjoying our delicious and yet light wholefood cuisine, you may of course visit us for a shorter time.

    After 10 days on a water only fast I started to get pain in my hips, lower back and sciatic. During the day it was no problem but this pain would seem to intensify at night when I laid down and I was unable to sleep at all the last two nights. I have stopped the fast until I can understand this more. Does anyone else know what causes this and possible remedies? I was doing great other than this. After a post fast broth and fresh vegetable juice regimen I fully recovered in 3 days.

      We do not recommend only water fasting, since it is very stressful for the body.
      According to the fasting method of our founder Dr Otto Buchinger, you can also take in teas, juices and soups, besides water. Our scientific studies show that it boosts your energy and does not break the fast.
      Long-term fasting has many benefits, but it should be done under medical supervision. If you are interested in more information about the indications we treat, please visit our website: www.buchinger-wilhelmi.com/en/therapeutic-fasting-and-nutritional-strategies/#indikatoren

    I had allergies to pollen which turned into bronchitis about 4 times a year from birth to age 17. i adopted a raw vegan diet around 1987 at 17 and immediately stopped having allergies to pollen and zero colds or bronchitis. No allergy meds at all. As long as my diet is just fruit and raw veggies and juices and black coffee and water i stay well and still weighv95 pounds at 5 feet 4 inches tall. i even smoked for a long time with zero lung issues. I drank alcohol off and on my whole life....years of not then a couple years on. I became an opiate addict in 2008 after i broke my arm. I ended up as an IV heroin addict 10 years. Bow im 5 years on suboxone and almost off it. My raw vegan diet has helped me get off the opiates. Im 55 now and even with all the addictions i feel and look very young. Ive done 14 days juice fasting almost every year. I would never do a fast and go back to cooked food .....cant imagine how anyone could eat dairy or eggs or meat after a fast....or any junk. I feel like cooked food is as addictive as heroin.

      I do 7x a week. One day maybe 16-17 hrs, longer days, maybe 22-23. Very safe and effective for your health. Check out some videos by Dr Fung, Dr Gundry, Dr Ekberg and, especially for women, Dr Mindy Pelz.

    How many hour to take fast?

    • @BuchingerWilhelmiFasting
      @BuchingerWilhelmiFasting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thank you for your comment 🙏 .
      The duration depends on many factors, e.g. previous diseases, general state of health, etc.

    My big concern with extended fasting is muscle loss. Have any studies been done on that?
    EDIT: To answer my own question, I found a study from Oct 2021 "Is muscle and protein loss relevant in long-term fasting in healthy men? A prospective trial on physiological adaptations"
    Results: A 10 day fast in men, who also did "...up to 3 h daily low-intensity physical activity" decreased body weight, on average by 7%. "Fat mass and lean soft tissues (which is muscle, bones, and seemingly anything that's not stored fat) accounted for about 40% and 60% of weight loss, respectively" and that "LST loss was explained by the reduction in extracellular water (44%), muscle and liver glycogen and associated water (14%), and metabolic active lean tissue (42%)". From what I can tell, metabolic active lean tissue is muscle. So 42% of the 60% weight loss was actual lean muscle loss. So, without using a calculator (please can someone do the actual maths here), we can roughly say that on a 10 day fast (200-250 kcal/day), expect to lose around 7% body fat, with 1/4th being muscle.
    As a 180lb man, a 10 day fast might make me lose 2-3 lbs of muscle, 9-10 lbs of fat. The usual go-to estimates for fat loss are 1-2lbs a week, and putting on 1-2lbs of muscle a month.
    Or, put another way: I could fast for 10 days, then spend 2 months putting back on lost muscle, while also dieting, and come out at: break even on muscle loss (0 muscle lost), 18-20lbs of fat lost.
    The thing everyone seems to skirt around is, not eating for 10 days is something that almost no one is able to stick to. Stress, lack of energy, and a break in habit are all hard to overcome.

      Hi Mark. When you plan on going for so long - 10 days - I wonder how likely do you see this as a lifestyle to do long term fasts?
      I would say if you do 36 hours 1-3 times a week? And you do this for longer because it is easy to do… Would this not have a bigger impact long term?

    How to start fasting ?

    • @BuchingerWilhelmiFasting
      @BuchingerWilhelmiFasting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fasting begins with a light vegetarian meal followed by a digestive rest day. After you have completed the fast, you gradually build up your nutrition again over a period of four days - an intense and pleasurable experience and one which is vital for the success of your stay in the long term.

    I have been fasting for about 5 years and feel the great. The longest I've done is 3 days and also do intermittent fasting.
    I've found out that I have Gilbert syndrome, a genetic condition so I shouldn't fast. I've been advised to eat a minimum of 4 small meals a day, ideally 6!. I've tried this for a month, and it does not work for me at all.
    What do you think? Have you come across this condition before.

    Food is that what you eat and that what eats you!!! You - are the microbes of all variety in their groups within us. There is no other you Within. You have a double in, who get Impressed by the other you who Acts. This guy, impressively acknowledge the Acts of the other. So food is Cognition and Fast is "Re - Cognition", the Impression of the Act. This infact is meditation perfect. Mindful mockery leads instead to mental Obesity....
