- First start of a 327 in a 1954 Austin Healey 100.
327 specs:
The block is bored .100 over
Forged steel crank std size
Flat top pistons
Reconditioned rods
ARP rod bolts
Camel hump 202 heads
10.5:1 compression
Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 510 lift hydraulic roller cam
Melonized distributor gear
Roller tip rockers
Pertronix igniter points and coil
Edelbrock 1406 carb
Edelbrock Streetmaster intake with oil fill tube
Block hugger headers with 2” exhausts and glass pack mufflers
I primed the break-in oil before installing the engine (you can’t pull the distributor with the engine in the car)
I set timing at 8 Deg advance with vacuum plugged.
I followed the Comp Cams recommendation to varying rpm from 2,000 to 2,500 for 30 minutes for break in.
The aluminum radiator is an aftermarket 1964-1/2 Mustang V8 radiator with a 16” Flex-A-Lite pusher fan. The transmission is a Muncie T20 with Hurst shifter. The rear is a 3.23 Chevy 10 bolt posi narrowed 16” with Moser axles. Front calipers are Girling 14 from a later big Healey. Rear calipers are from a 1999 Z28. Wheels are 15” Cragar SS. Wilwood pedals are installed with front and rear master cylinders and a clutch master. New firewall, foot boxes, and transmission tunnel were fabricated. Seats are Factory Five buckets. Floor, firewall, and foot boxes are insulated with Design Engineering insulation. Belts are Jegs 3” 5 point. A crossmember was added to support conventional shocks, belt mounts, and a pinion snubber.
I bought this car two years ago with a 283 V8 and an automatic transmission. The axle and radiator were original. I believe the V8 was installed in the 1960’s. My goal was to build a 1960’s hot rod done right with a few safety, reliability, and power additions.
I plan to list this car on Bring-a-Trailer in a few weeks to fund the next project.
