Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Western trilogy: A Fistful of Dollars (Italian: Per un pugno di dollari), For a Few Dollars More (Italian: Per qualche dollaro in più), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Italian title: Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo)! Clint Eastwood kicks ass and takes names in IMHO!
Agree with some. Here are my favorite 10 western films: 1) Red River 2) Shane 3) High Noon 4) Little Big Man 5) Destry Rides Again 6) Duel In The Sun 7) Jeremiah Johnson 8) The Magnificent Seven 9) The Outlaw Josie Wales 10) Rio Bravo (love the opening sequence with no dialogue for the first 4-5 minutes) Noticeably, I omitted "The Searchers" because I've always felt there were many better John Wayne movies, although I admit most of his fans really love this movie. Also omitted "Butch Cassidy..."etc., because, for me, it doesn't hold up over the distance of time the way some of the other films I listed do. Several movies were close to the top 10 for me: "The Big Country", "Dodge City"(best barroom brawl), "The Gunfighter", "The Appaloosa", "Winchester 73", etc. etc. etc. I love western movies. Always have!
Shane: So you're Jack Wilson. Jack Wilson: What's that mean to you, Shane? Shane: I've heard about you. Jack Wilson: What have you heard, Shane? Shane: I've heard that you're a low-down Yankee liar. Jack Wilson: Prove it. The showdown between Shane and Wilson is one of the best scenes in any Western.
1.- The good the bad and the ugly 2.- Once upon a time in the west 3.- Unforgiven 4.- My name is nobody 5.- Fistful of dollars 6.- For a few dollars more 7.- Young guns 8.- Young guns 2 9.- The magnificent seven 10.- 3:10 to Yuma Greetings from MExico !!!!
The Searchers is defiantly the greatest western of all time. So visually beautiful and I don't think any western has influenced cinema as much as that has.
"Back in the Saddle Again" The signature song of American cowboy entertainer Gene Autry. It was co-written by Autry with Ray Whitley and first released in 1939. The song was associated with Autry throughout his career and was used as the name of Autry's autobiography in 1976.
Great List. Everyone has different ones and there are so many great westerns that it is hard to have a top ten and we are most fortunate in that. We are fortunate to be able to come up with different movies and different lists. I would have included High Noon and The Ox Bow Incident maybe as honorable mention. Fantastic. And what a parting shot in The Searchers.
I like how everyone's giving this guy crap over HIS top ten westerns. Does it say YOUR top ten up there? No, it doesn't. Now show some respect for the guy, he's just sharing his favorites. Just because he doesn't like some that many know about, doesn't mean you can start giving him shit about his opinion. These are his favorites, show respect.
I love how at the end of the Searchers John Wayne grabs his arm in mimicry of the late great western character actor actor,Harry Carey before saundering alone into the distance. Great scene from a great movie.
I think Unforgiven is Clint's masterpiece. Simply the best movie of its decade. It deconstructs the mythology of the West and, in that respect, it's the child of Liberty Valance with started that trend decades earlier. I think it's good to have a historical appreciation of the genre.
Among my favorite westerns are: Vera Cruz - Burt, Gary The Sheep Man - Glenn, Shirley Support Your Local Sheriff - James For a Few Dollars More - Clint Johnny Guitar - Sterling, Joan The Professionals - Burt, Lee, Robert Man Without A Star - Kirk, Jeanne Magnificent Seven - Yul, Steve, Charles High Noon - Gary, Grace, Katy, Lloyd, Sheb Shane - Alan, Jean, Van, Jack, Brandon Warlock - Henry, Richard Jubal - Glenn, Ernest San Antonio - Errol Gunfighter - Gregory
Interesting list... Some of my favorites include: "Support Your Local Sherrif", "The Cheyenne Social Club", "Maverick", "Quigley Down Under", "McLintock", "Once Upon a Time in the West", "The Magnificent Seven", "The Professionals", and my all-time favorite "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly".
Really enjoyed this. thanks. You could have some fun doing a top ten list broken out by different year groups (I mean the 50/60's needs a Randolph Scott movie like Ride the High Country) or slightly redefining the genre to Rugged American Originals - a category that would allow adding The Fightin' Kentuckians or Last of the Mohicans. No complaints, just enjoying your collection and appreciate people who are good doing this and want to see more.
Nice list! Here's mine: 1. High Noon 2. Shane 3. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 4. Unforgiven 5. Ride the High Country 6. Seven Men From Now 7. Red River 8. The Magnificent Seven 9. The Wild Bunch 10. Open Range
It was interesting to see no one mentioned High Noon. I caught parts of it as a kid in the 1960s and thought it was boring. After my sister-in-law's husband admonished me for being critical of Gary Cooper I thought it only fit to watch High Noon in its entirity, and became a convert. The same for the Shootist.
Awesome list! I agree on the Searchers, Jerimiah Johnson. Liberty Valance and more. I must say the Searchers had the biggest impact on me that any western has ever had. Loved seeing the end again. Must go rent the movie again!
Some very good clips in your video, and your list does indeed end on a good note. Indeed, the plot, music, scenery, acting, drama, comedy, and most of all, John Wayne, taken together, make The Searchers the greatest western movie of all time, leaving the no. 2 , which is more debatable, lying in the dust.
10. Red River 9. El Dorado 8. Shane 7. Rio Bravo 6. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly 5. Unforgiiven 4. Once Upon A Time In the West 3. The Wild Bunch 2. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1. The Searchers It's pretty hard to top the Searchers in Westerns
Nice list, pretty hard to argue with The Searchers being #1! I only saw it for the first time a little over a year ago, and it quickly became one of my favorite movies.
1. Once Upon A Time In the West 2. The Good the Bad and the Ugly 3. The Wild Bunch 4. High Noon 5. Unforgiven 6. The Quick & the Dead 7. The Professionals 8. Quigley Down Under 9. The Long Riders 10. Open Range
Really impossible to disagree on anyone selection of personal favorites. Particularly happy that The Gunfighter and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance were included --- too often these ultimate "town" Westerns are sadly neglected. However, one film I would have included in any list of my own would have been John Ford's "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" --- which captured the story of the U.S. Cavalry better than any other movie ever has.
You have to add: 'The Horse Soldiers' (1959) and another John Ford masterpiece, as well 'Stagecoach' (1939), plus 'Lonely Are the Brave' (1962), and the original versions of '3:10 to Yuma' and 'Gunfight at th OK Corral' And I agree, 'High Noon' should be on the list, too.
Dear halbie71, if I'm not mistaken, "The Wild Bunch" is a film, with Willian Holden, tha I watched in 1957. Am I worong? There were three men. I would like to know about it please. Thank you.
I'm a big Fan of Sergio Leone Western, and especially Ennio Morricone's themes. The good, the bad and the ugly is defenetly the best western movie, and my favorite movie too...
All of these classics are just that...classics, but don't forget about all the NEW classics. I consider Lonesome Dove a top contender of all time. Tombstone, Open Range, and Broken Trail are all right up there with the rest. There will never be another Captain Gus McCrea, or Woodrow F. Call
I don't see anything wrong with your list. I've seen 'em all and liked 'em all. And if I made a list, there would be folks that liked all of THEM. Who cares? There are some great parts in all of 'em. Thanks for showing us YOUR list! Terry in Alexis, NC, USA
My 10 best westerns are 1 Guns of fort petticoat 2 Walk the proud land 3 40 guns to apache pass 4 The sheepman 5 the violent men 6 the fastest gun alive 6 Guns of the timberland 7 The way west 8 north to alaska 9 No name on the bullet 10 The last wagon.
Ya gotta love a list with two Will Geer movies. If I may, my top ten: 1. Shane 2. The Searchers 3. Winchester '73 4. My Darling Clementine 5. Stagecoach 6. Seven Men from Now 7. Rio Grande 8. Ride the High Country 9. Bend of the River 10. The Big Country With an honourable mention to Bar 20 Rides Again. Hoppy rules!
Good list. We all have favorites not included. I especially like your no. 9 pick, "The Gunfighter", a quality movie which largely been under recogized.
Some good classic picks there. Surprised Butch Cassidy was included, but it must be a classic by now. My list would include Unforgiven, High Noon, Hombre, and El Dorado.
10) The Shootist (the Dukes best) 9) The Stalking Moon 8) Ride the High Country 7) High Noon 6) Goin' South (has the very best gunfight of all time) 5) The Professionals 4) The Gunfighter 3) Little Big Man 2) The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 1) The Ox Bow Incident
I saw an interview with Clint Eastwood where he said that John Wayne never liked any of his westerns, the characters that Eastwood played just didn't appeal to the Duke.
I would have kicked out some of the classic movies and put High Noon and some italian and modern ones in. IMO Once Upon a Time in the West is by far the most accomplished western movie ever made.
I got another one for you: "The BIG COUNTRY" Gregory Peck and a host of other supporting cast. It is awesome and Burle Ives and even Chuck Conners are magnificent in that. Made in the late 50's I believe.
10. The Searchers (1956) 9. 3:10 To Yuma (2007) 8. Soldier Blue (1970) 7. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 6. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) 5. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) 4. Rio Bravo (1959) 3. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) 2. Unforgiven (1992) 1. The Wild Bunch (1969)
I have a liking for Broken Lance with Spence Tracy playing a perfect old Charlie Goodnight type cattle king. And any list of great westerns must include Old Yeller.
Yes I would have that one despite John Wayne's feeling about it. However there were some classics and some people think the last one was the finest western ever made - it was very moving and one of the first to pose ambiguities about native americans.
Favorite western movies of all time: The Searchers, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, Hondo, The Magnificent Seven, The War Wagon, Broken Trail, Tombstone, The last of the dogmen, True Grit, Red River, The Cowboys, Rio Lobo, The Comandcheros, Rooster Cogburn, She Wore a yellow ribbon, The Sons of katie elder, Fort Apache, Once Upon a time in the west, Open Range and that raps if up im sure i have more so many great ones my list mostly consist of john wayne movies =) but there a few in there that are not western movies are my favorite genre.
THE SEARCHERS is probably the greatest western ever made. Directed by John Ford, starring John Wayne with a great cast, Monument Valley as a backdrop - how could it miss. Not to mention a great musical score. Trivia - did you know that last scene where Duke Wayne holds his left arm is his way of paying homage to Harry Carey ? Did you know the song "That will be the day" by Buddy Holly was inspired by him seeing this movie ?
I have made a mistake. The film is "Streets of Laredo" from 1949. My God, it's a long time ago. But I have never forgoten it. Those three of them. Thank you.
stepandonehaf : Good list. Was "The Outlaw Josey Wales was one of my all time favorites along with Jeramiah Johnson, The Unforgiven, Hang Um High. Kinda partial to Clint in my old age. I was the generation raised on Lash Larue, Whip Wilson, Hop Along Cassidy, Gene Autry , Roy Rogers, etc.
@halbie71 Great reply to "Where the hell is Tombstone?" I would have added Once Upon a Time in The West, but your list has some really great ones. Love the music
Wow , your old school for sure . My list would include Life and times of Judge Roy Bean . Silverado , The Shootist , Will Penny , Hang Em High and Lonesome Dove .
I won't argue with you. You said YOUR favorites, so there's no right or wrong to the list. I did notice there were no Italian Westerns, or Westerns of the ilk (Wild Bunch, various Eastwood Westerns). Are you not a fan or have you not seen them? To see a list that doesn't have either The Wild Bunch, The Good The Bad and the Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, Once Upon a Time in the West, Django, High Plains Drifter, or Unforgiven just seems odd.
It's probably unfair to have to "rank" the top 10, but best westerns should have: a catchy theme song or tunes, marquee actors, and unforgettable characterization. Here goes, without order.... High Noon Once Upon a Time in the West The Magnificent Seven The Hanging Tree The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Rio Bravo My Name is Nobody Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Shane She Wore a Yellow Ribbon The Wild Bunch
@Buffsters no problemo, Paul Newman's character's name in Hombre was John Russel, but I know who you are talking about, John Russel was in Rio Bravo & I remember he was in a western on TV called "Lawman" 1958-1962
Baskerville22 I would add Rio Bravo (1959), Nevada Smith (1966), The Wild Bunch (1969), True Grit (1969) & Heaven's Gate (1980) to a top fifteen list.
@LBSmith2 thank you for your input. I would add Rio Bravo (1959), Nevada Smith (1966), The Wild Bunch (1969), True Grit (1969) & Heaven's Gate (1980) to a top fifteen list.
MY TOP TEN WESTERNS: 1)-THE SEARCHERS;2)SEVEN MEN FROM NOW;3)-THE NAKED SPUR;4)-JOHNNY GUITAR;5)-VERA CRUZ;6)-RIO BRAVO;7)- THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE;8)- HIGH NOON;9)-RED RIVER;10)-STAGECOACH. Eddie Lancaster.
Halbie 71--My apologizes I meant Walter Brennan. John Russell was in Rio Bravo. He played a bad guy named Nathan Burdette. He died in 1991 at the age of 70. He was a gorgeous man. Thanks -- Buffster23
Hey everybody I just saw the new version of "True Grit" I really didn't care for it all that much. I suggest you save your money & wait for it to come out on DVD.
Hey, my comment might not mean much to you guys, but i used to watch cowboy films with my Grandad when i was younger, and still today they cheer me, this guys sixteen, its her personal opinion, the most popular 'Good the Bad & the Ugly, Once Upon A time In the West, A Fistful Of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More?' are not always the best, give the kid a break.
Good list! I havent seen Jerimiah Johnson since it was in the theaters, but the rest are all top films...The Searchers was John Wayne's best role ever IMO.
Almost all of John Ford's Westerns were filned im Monument Valley, Arizona on Navajo Land. You'll recognize someof the Navajo in Fort Apache, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. You'll see them again in Cheyenne Autum.
No, I still need to see The Searchers (I know I know), may I also recommend some 60s and 70s westerns like The Wild Bunch, High Plains Drifter (I love that one), Unforgiven, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, every Sergio leone film really
Good list! Others justifiably in a top 10: McCabe & Mrs Miller, great meditation on business & capital in the making of the West. High Noon. For John Ford: My Darling Clementine (Searchers vastly overrated). The Ox-Bow Incident - the most powerful moral argument. Wild Bunch over Mag 7 - gotta have Peckinpah. Cat Ballou? Can't forget Unforgiven - too trenchant, too dark, too beautiful. Finally a gem of the loner sub-genre, Martin Ritt's "Hombre" w/ Paul Newman - tough, dusty, redemptive.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is the greatest western I have seen. Masterful, profound and moving.
my 5 favourite wetserns
1.The Searchers
2.Stagecoach
3.High Noon
4.The Shootist
5.Rio Bravo
Aggelos GR That's exactly my Toplist !
Thank you for your input!!!
Here are my favorite 10 western films:

4) Little Big Man
5) Destry Rides Again
6) Duel In The Sun
7) Jeremiah Johnson
8) The Magnificent Seven
9) The Outlaw Josie Wales
10) Rio Bravo (love the opening sequence with no dialogue for the first 4-5 minutes)
Noticeably, I omitted "The Searchers" because I've always felt there were many better John Wayne movies, although I admit most of his fans really love this movie. Also omitted "Butch Cassidy..."etc., because, for me, it doesn't hold up over the distance of time the way some of the other films I listed do.

1.- The good the bad and the ugly
2.- Once upon a time in the west
3.- Unforgiven
4.- My name is nobody
5.- Fistful of dollars
6.- For a few dollars more
7.- Young guns
8.- Young guns 2

Thank you for your comments Danny, it is always good to hear from our neighbors from the North!

You could always argue about the list but I like that you got the best scene to the best of them all. Well played.

4. Unforgiven

6. Seven Men From Now
7. Red River

Personally I found the TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove" to be the greatest western ever made.

Nice list, pretty hard to argue with The Searchers being #1! I only saw it for the first time a little over a year ago, and it quickly became one of my favorite movies.
@GP1583 thank you for your comments! It is refreshing that someone disagrees with someone's opinion without resorting to insults.

Really impossible to disagree on anyone selection of personal favorites. Love your picks. One of my favorites is Rio Bravo w/John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Yul Brenner & John Russell. Thank U for sharing!!!!
Dear halbie71, if I'm not mistaken, "The Wild Bunch" is a film, with Willian Holden, tha I watched in 1957. Am I worong? There were three men. I would like to know about it please. Thank you.

6 the fastest gun alive
6 Guns of the timberland

THE SEARCHERS is a true American masterpiece.
Hi,,,
Could you tell me if these moves ( in full ) are available in youtube...
Gopal
I saw an interview with Clint Eastwood where he said that John Wayne
never liked any of his westerns, the characters that Eastwood played
just didn't appeal to the Duke.
Shane is one of my favorite films of all time but I am a big fan of the Cohens and will be interested in seeing their True Grit remake.
A very fine list, all solid pictures.
The greatest western never made: John Wayne co-starring with Clint Easwood
Clint Eastwood Definately the coolest most badass western actor that ever! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!!
I would have kicked out some of the classic movies and put High Noon and some italian and modern ones in.
IMO Once Upon a Time in the West is by far the most accomplished western movie ever made.
1. Shane
2. Rio Bravo
3. The Searchers
4. The Wild Bunch
5. Unforgiven
Thank You Fast Eddie! The Ending Song Was, You Guessed it, The Sons of The Pioneers And The Song Title is "What Makes A Man To Wander"
I got another one for you: "The BIG COUNTRY" Gregory Peck and a host of other supporting cast. It is awesome and Burle Ives and even Chuck Conners are magnificent in that. Made in the late 50's I believe.
10. The Searchers (1956)
9. 3:10 To Yuma (2007)
8. Soldier Blue (1970)

4. Rio Bravo (1959)
3. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
2. Unforgiven (1992)
1. The Wild Bunch (1969)
No one ever talks about The Great Silence, it's a really good western.
I have a liking for Broken Lance with Spence Tracy playing a perfect old Charlie Goodnight type cattle king. And any list of great westerns must include Old Yeller.
Some good picks, but is there a better western than Rio Bravo?
No doubt: The Searchers; An American masterpiece.
Yes I would have that one despite John Wayne's feeling about it. However there were some classics and some people think the last one was the finest western ever made - it was very moving and one of the first to pose ambiguities about native americans.
Not a bad choice. Go for the top 15 and add High Noon, Tombstone, Stagecoach (1939), Open Range, & Rio Bravo.
the gunfighter is number 1 No question about it. It's just on a much higher level then these other common western movies
Lonesome Dove, Open Range, Broken Trail. Robert Duvall.
Unforgiven, and quite a few more, Clint Eastwood.

Close..I'm going with High Noon
I have made a mistake. The film is "Streets of Laredo" from 1949. My God, it's a long time ago. But I have never forgoten it. Those three of them. Thank you.
Once Upon a Time in the West, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and Django. Those are my top 3
agreed, the good bad and the ugly is easily the best western movie in my opinion
stepandonehaf : Good list.
@halbie71 Great reply to "Where the hell is Tombstone?"
I would have added Once Upon a Time in The West, but your list has some really great ones. Love the music
Wow , your old school for sure . My list would include Life and times of Judge Roy Bean . Silverado , The Shootist , Will Penny , Hang Em High and Lonesome Dove .
capitaoduc really good list you have. Thank you for your input. It is good to hear from our South American friends.
Jeff
My personal top 5 would have to be Unforgiven, Tombstone, the Good the Bad and the Ugly, A Fistfull of Dollars and High noon.
High Noon
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Magnificent Seven
The Hanging Tree
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Rio Bravo
My Name is Nobody
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Shane
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Wild Bunch
@Buffsters no problemo, Paul Newman's character's name in Hombre was John Russel, but I know who you are talking about, John Russel was in Rio Bravo & I remember he was in a western on TV called "Lawman" 1958-1962
Outlaw Josey Wales, One-Eyed Jacks, 310 to Yuma, Unforgiven, High Plains Drifter, my top five.
Baskerville22 I would add Rio Bravo (1959), Nevada Smith (1966), The Wild Bunch (1969), True Grit (1969) & Heaven's Gate (1980) to a top fifteen list.
valdez is coming--great story line and great acting--one of top ten
@LBSmith2 thank you for your input. I would add Rio Bravo (1959), Nevada Smith (1966), The Wild Bunch (1969), True Grit (1969) & Heaven's Gate (1980) to a top fifteen list.
Among TV Westerns Lonesome Dove has to be number 1 IMHO.
very nice list - i would have to put " The Outlaw Josey Wales " in there somewhere
MY TOP TEN WESTERNS:
1)-THE SEARCHERS;2)SEVEN MEN FROM NOW;3)-THE NAKED SPUR;4)-JOHNNY GUITAR;5)-VERA CRUZ;6)-RIO BRAVO;7)- THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE;8)- HIGH NOON;9)-RED RIVER;10)-STAGECOACH.
Seven Men from Now is ONE OF THE GREAT ONES!
Eddie Lancaster.
My personal top 5 would have to be Unforgiven, Tombstone, the Good the Bad and the Ugly, A Fistfull of Dollars and High noon. Good list though.
John Wayne at the door -- a salute to his mentor Harry Carey, Sr., as he grabs his right arm.
great movies of course, but the Spaghetti Western with Clint Eastwood, Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone are a piece of story too
With a couple exceptions the list is right on. I'm kinda partial to Fort Apache and Gunfighter's Moon.
