The motor always turns the specified number of degrees. The number of degrees to activate the manipulator and rotate 90 degrees are known in advance - constants
To be more precise - I believe Lego Mindstorms motors have a feedback system inside them similar to a scroll wheel on a computer mouse. This way they can keep track of how much they've rotated, even if you manually rotate the motor
Cool! Maybe you can use one motor to go forward, backward, right and left by switching the transmission gears.
