Pauline Rhodes This song is fabulous, I remember it from when it was first released. It was written by someone who understands how music should be written.
I listen to this song a lot and the main reason is "he became drinker and she became mother, i knew one day it would be one or the other" that line perfectly encapsulates how i feel abourt a person in my life, fucking genius likes.
This was their encore for the show in 1980 when I saw them in Toronto......brilliant...the whole crowd was singing and swaying their arms to this.....amazing show!
So much, kindness and compassion in this song, there is something special about older women, and you can sense that wonderfulness in the way he describes her.
Not to be contrary but I would vote for beats out McCartney hands-down* & cohabitates with the spirit of John somewhere East of Essex 😊❤ * Come-on-now, be honest! Squeeze, even at their worst, would still not have recorded "Jet" 😉
FYI: Image take at Deptford Wharf - Squeeze formed in Deptford, London, in 1974
All those oasis fans who do sub Beatles covers could do well to listen to this I so agree with you it’s fabulous
