This is the most detailed strategy video on the NYC marathon I have seen. The clips of the actual race really bring the it to life. Super helpful - I hope to run it soon.
Very nicely done strategy piece, Eric! As a consecutive 11 year NYC marathon runner (this November 3rd will be my 12th), this is a wonderful summary of what to expect. The only thing I would add as a mention is that for the NYC, the second half is a bit more hilly than the first half - in part because there will be a few more bridges to cross... so save a bit of pace for the second half... and it will make for a much more enjoyable race! Again, very nice work and good luck to the NYC runners!
Eric I just found ur videos & thanks so much for all the tips. Running this November 6th & I'm so excited to be able to run my 4th Marathon but more importantly to me the NYC Marathon will be my 1st major....so excited & nervous.
I didn’t expect run my second NYC 2019 Marathon... I ran NYC 2018 and it was amazing, now I’m very exited to back and enjoy this beautiful marathon again !! NYC 2018 has been very special for me, it was my sixth major and I earned my six star medal at the Central Park 🙌🏼🤙🏼💪🏼
Thank you Eric! I’m so excited about running the NY marathon for the first time. It’s my 50th year too! You have been so insightful and helpful. I hope to meet you at packet pick up.
Thank you so much for this video! This is my first marathon in life and I'm freaking out. But your contribution will help me a lot about what to expect.
YOU WILL BE JUST FINE CINTHIA IN THE BEGINNING MAYBE YOU FEEL LITTLE NERVS RACKING BUB NORMAL.. YOU HAVE THIS YOUR GOAL IS TO FINISH... I DID THE NYC MARATHON FOUR TIMES . 2013,2014,2015 AND 2018
Really great stuff, Eric. Done the race many times, and seeing your video from the course brought some tears to my eyes. So psyched for another go on Sunday. Good luck to all. Cheers.
A lot of good info here. I would strongly advise against getting too worked up on 4th Ave in Brooklyn. It is very easy to lose your race strategy there. When in doubt slow down at least until mile 17. Just my opinion. 4 time finisher. This race never gets old.
qualified through 9+1 for a couple years but never followed through. However, I did volunteer and this year will be my 3rd time. Your videos really encourage me to want to do this in 2019. I'm emotional just thinking about what the finishers go through. Hope you continue your great content and I'm hopeful to be part of the 1% one day.
J Lo getting the 9+1 is hard enough, you should follow through, it’s intimidating but totally worth experiencing. Tcs marathon is one of the best marathon in the world so it’s something you can brag.
Thank you for such an insightful video! I'm running my first marathon this Sunday in NYC. Definitely nervous but I feel more prepared after watching this!
Thanks! I'm so excited for you to be running your first. And for it to be NYC! It was my first back in 2008, nothing compares to it!! You're going to have so. much. fun!!!
Your videos have been very helpful. As we just received corral and wave assignments today, any chance you could do a video talking about the differences between Green wave vs orange/blue? Green goes on the bottom of verazzano bridge rather than over, and obviously diverts until mile 4 but is there anything other than that Green wave runners should know? I'm assuming you've run in all waves by now lol
I honestly don’t think there’s enough for a video. Green runs the bottom of the bridge, blue on the left side of the upper deck and orange on the right. Green joins up with the other two before the 5th mile or so.
Great video! Running NYC for the first time this year (2023)...also my first marathon! Two questions - what's up with the strategy of rotating water with Gatorade on the course? (vs. all Gatorade for example). And is it worth carrying any of your own water? Feels like No.
Hey, just to answer your last question. I love to run with a vest and the NYC Marathon now permits vests as long as the bottles are carried on the front. I like the security of having my own water and being able to drink and digest my nutrition on my own terms.
I’m on the lower level (a bit bummed as it’s most likely my one and only NYC Marathon and I like to film here and there). Do you get a little side view of the bridge going down to the level? How’s the view in comparison (obviously don’t see the beautiful spires)?
Got emotional watching this 😁😢 15 more days , can’t wait
Ran my first NYC Marathon yesterday. This is by far the best and most accurate/informative video out there.

Thank you for the great video! Running my first NYC Marathon in 2019; I appreciate the wealth of information you've shared here!
Dan Thoreson me too
After entering Brooklyn and going over the first hill in Bay Ridge, there will be a second bigger hill after 59st. So really pace yourself there.
Amazing review. Thanks a lot from an Italian Marathoner, with a running channel :)
MASSIVE MASSIVE thank you

Actually its a bit better on the bottom. Same views, no helicopters on your head, and a little less of an incline.
DirtyOldSneakers thanks 🤗

For the NYC marathon; with all the crowds and noise and excitement from those crowds, what are your thoughts on headphones/music?
What is it like for folks taking 6-6 1/2 hours??? Do they start tearing things down? Still support??
There are water tables every mile after the bridge, not every two miles.
Do you have a favorite Gel for the NYCC Marathon?
I prefer the Gu chocolate mint, but it’s all personal preference.
Geat video
we will never run it, but my 7 year old liked our presentation :) … (e.g. "waterfall of urine" :)
If those who signed up for Virtual Race, can they join the crowd to run on the actual race route?
Negative. Virtual means somewhere else.
