How do you create a curved spring in SolidWorks? It's not as simple as it sounds. The helix tool doesn't give you an option to do this, so you have to use some surfacing wizardry to get the job done.
Once you learn this method, you can apply this same workflow to all kinds of spring shapes.
This method uses a surface sweep with the "specify twist value" option turned on. This allows you to create a curved helix with two simple sketches.

Thanks for the tutorial! Intersection Curve is in the drop-down under Convert Entities.

So, can this be used in a pattern? i wanted to try and make a cool spout for a sink, say 6 of these all twisting together but not connecting except for the base and the actual spout. Seems if you try this with different two plus arcs the points where they connect seem to mess things up a bit. Great video though this helped a bunch!

Hi. Good video. Apparently circular sweep gives a different result for the spring body mass and the circle sketch also gives a different result, same material and same diameter applied. These two methods don't yield the same result. What is your suggestion for the CSWE, as there won't be any multiple choice

It should be accounted for in their range of values for the answer, but the intended method, I believe, is the surfacing method. (surface sweep, then solid sweep)

Yes, that is very clear. I was referring to the final sweep, the one to give the final answer to the question. So you mean, circular sweep, not create a sketch and draw a circle, then do the sweep with sketch and path.

@Dionis Marku The way the problem is shown on the actual CSWE, it is probably better to simply create a sketch circle.

great video. impressive. could do without the options of doing things and just show the best practice method. that way it is more clear. good to know options but becomes messy to place in memory. Please more CSWE examples for the test. Big thumbs up aand subscribe!
