    A few comments are asking for a written version of this system, which is great to see! Currently there are some early drafts of these rules (one for cooking and one for potions) on my Patreon. However, I'll be publishing a fully updated and expanded version to Patreon later in April, which will closely reflect the system I use now, as laid out in this video.

      Preffer to avoid dices at all, or atleats try to. First, i think a receive for a thing, not very detailed just something.
      "Great heal potion: Orc blood and Alchemy charge."
      Them, when a player tries to make it, i think it in more detail.
      "Great heal potion: Heat up the orc blood, untill it starts to look more brighter, use Alchemy charge."
      Them i ask my players how they a proach it, given sundden hints.
      "The ork blood looks dirty, maybe you will need to clean it..."
      I like it because sometimes, dices can be too randown.

      Cool ideas. I love it. Its such a detailed crafting system, I feel like it would need a crafting sheet pdf to add to the back of your character sheet to help list all your crafting materials, bonuses, level and so forth.

    To bring something in from older editions, you can have a key process instead of a key component! "Forge in a volcano" or "distilled under the moon on the spring equinox". Achieves the same goals, but gives a DM a more flexibility to be creative 😉

    I use the Foraging, Harvesting & Natural Discovery and Alchemy, Crafting & Enchanting systems by Nord Games LCC. Their crafting system is very similar to the one presented here, but the idea you presented about crafting points fixes a few problems I've come across. Originally crafting and enchanting items was apparently part of the D&D 3e and 3.5e system, but 4e and 5e have ruled it out on the grounds that there were too many items at the time.

    If, for example, Troll Ichor was a key ingredient of a healing potion then wouldn't some entrepreneurial sorts just essentially capture and farm trolls? Any large organisation could sponsor such an enterprise. Similarly for any rare ingredients, like the herbs, some druidic sect might farm such a thing, and even try and enforce a monopoly on such to keep the prices high - any adventurers bringing such a thing into town might have it confiscated or have to pay a very hefty tax.

    I have done this before with similair rules, my own extra rule for their weapon craft is they can attempt an additional dice roll to choose wherever to increase Attack bonus or damage bonus or even an extra action that can change the tide of combat (a long sword with a hook head allow to pull a target from 10 to 15ft into melee range or attempt to hook the target leg and force them to roll a DC Dex saving 12 to prone them) Crafting is fun in dnd when you want to give tiny but interesting detail of freedom for your player.

    I have a similar system in my home brew that I borrowed from a friend. Artificers exist in my game and I did a sandbox campaign that centered around the players acquiring materials for an artificer.

    I always thought that the systems put forth in Pathfinder 2e are such a good example to build off of. They show how some savvy design can allow players to do rewarding things with their skills without being too obtuse for play. I always thought that 5e tends to be way too restrictive in this regard.

    I really like this system. I like giving my characters some sort of craft (current one is a wood carver and next one is a tailor), but I had to find my own rules about it because I wanted to better gauge making items. My DM was going with very basic guidelines, but I try to implement special components or knowledge when I run games. So this sounds like a better thought out version of my ideal crafting system. Can't wait to see a fully fleshed out version and see how it works!

    one of my players go to favourites is pipe bombs or a small ranged explosive for fighters to use. a spell scroll tube, some rope for a fuse, and gunpowder/blackpowder. depending on the level of the party it will do either 1 or 2d10 and my players love them. whenever they have some spending gold getting more blasting powder is always a priority for them

    Instead of using this for 5e, I’d use this for my more rules-light systems like Cairn or something. It’d be easy to implement and the players would have an easier time absorbing everything since the base game is so simple by comparison (less of a burden on everyone)

    I also include Arcane proficiency along with tools. A medicine proficiency too. I like the key component failure. It doesn’t feel so bad. What did you do about amount of time?

    is there any sort of documents for this system on your patreon or anywhere else my friend? i would transcribe from the video but am considering supporting (i don't have much haha im a student) but i really, really love your videos. you have a gentle way about you that reminds me of my grandfather. he was a story teller and a very funny man, he is the one who got me into dnd without me realising it, he would make up stories of 5 flying pigs and i was their leader and hero haha.
    i digress, thankyou for some really interesting ideas here. i run a RP/Rule heavy game. My players can't for example multi-class without finding a master to teach them.
    Was consdering something like that here...unless they find a master craftsmen to teach them, they can only ever craft common items. once they do, they unlock this system.

      While I know some people aren't into it, I personally love playing in those sorts of games - that multiclassing through roleplay with an NPC thing is a perfect example of it. Can be a little slower, but tremendously rewarding, I find.
      If you're looking for a written version of this system, you can find two PDFs on my Patreon that would be relevant - one is for cooking and the other for potion crafting. They were made a while ago, but I'll be posting an updated "definitive" crafting supplement to Patreon later this month, summarising and expanding upon the system as laid out in this video.
      EDIT: but remember, once I post something to Patreon, it's there forever, so if you can't splash out this month, no stress, it'll be there in future too! I was a student myself not too long ago so I know how that can be 😁

    But how would magic factor in?
    I have a Forge Cleric drow that is interested in magical artifacts and learning how to craft deadly or beautiful equipment. 5e.
    The magic allows them some extra abilities.
    Would they get advantage on rolls?
    Or special way of increasing the gold limit above the 100 g?

    1. I wouldn't want to create a list of everything you could craft and a DC for each one. I'd rather do times, DC's, and costs more categorically, and/or decide some case by case, including their special components.
    2. Some crafts wouldn't work on the road. I'd rule you need a shop, lab, etc, for things like smithing and magic items, but some might work with just a kit, and/or you might be able to do some things on the road with a kit, like make small items, minor repairs, etc.
    3. By definition, crafting during a long rest should negate the rest. Working is not resting or "light activity."
    Just my thoughts. Roll on.

      Good points! As regards 1, I totally get that - that's actually why I suggest the optional rule where you make the list up on a case by case basis. Making the list is only fun if you enjoy that sort of thing 😁 RE point 2, I absolutely agree! Hence my suggestion that some crafting, smithing for example, would need to be done during extended downtime, with access to relevant work spaces, like a forge. Some things just don't make sense as being craftable anywhere, right? Especially when it's higher-level items. Point 3 we differ on - I'm always happy to build things like cooking or potion brewing into that two hour window and to class them as light activity - but that won't work for every table I'm sure. Thanks for the input!

      Definitely a bit of work beforehand, even if it's easy enough to run on the night. I made PDFs for Cooking rules and Potion Crafting rules over on Patreon, which you could use as a jumping off point - they're all on Patreon now. BUT I'm going to post a fully updated version later this month, with item lists, suggested components, DCs, etc, for a couple of different crafting types. Should be out on Patreon towards the end of April!

      You can save some work by making a few examples and letting your players pitch ideas when they want to make something new.
      Also, be prepared for some normal storyline monster to get brought down and the players to ask stuff like "hey, can I make a cloak of displacement from this thing's hide?" Don't be afraid to say yes!

    I’ve tired this system with your cooking homebrew and honestly maybe it’s just me I feel like it’s a perfect level of complexity while keeping it simple enough where you don’t have tables upon tables of stuff to worry about like other systems. But overall I love the system lots and am gonna try and implement the potion version this as well :)

      That's so good to hear! When I'm designing something like this, the biggest challenge is finding the balance between "complex enough to be interesting" and "easy enough that it doesn't break the flow of the game", so I'm glad you find that to have worked.

    Flint the Dwarf Barbarian and blacksmith approaches Conrad, the blacksmith who runs the Dwarven anvil smithy. Because the anvil is infused with ancestral blood of Dwarven smiths gone by, Flint could have a bonus of a plus to his roll or a different die if he chose to take more time to craft?!

    I think specializations should be inline with what they craft. So if the often craft potions of healing, you specialize in that, with no choice to specialize in others like chef, etc.

      To clarify, if you make potions, you wouldn't have the option to specialize in chef-related things. You're specializing in the area of potion-brewing specifically. You absolutely could create different specializations depending on the particular potions the player had been crafting, though. Personally, I prefer not to, since a player who makes lots of healing potions is likely to self-select for healing-related specializations anyway, but that's just my approach.

    With the example of the vial of trolls blood, how many vials would you determine can be gotten from a troll?

      I would determine that by seeing how common trolls are in my world, and how difficult they are to take down for the party, personally. Ultimately up to the dm I think

    Stupid question: but is there any perks to eating fancy meals over rations? I know role play, but how do you incentivize cooking or make it feel valuable?
    I have one player who’s trying to be a chef.

      In my cooking system, yes - I match a small bonus to most of the meals on the crafting list. Some of the more basic meals don't have a bonus, but players can still use them to get more crafting points.

      From something similar in our games: Temp hit points pair very well with cooking, easy to scale and not overpowered.
      Don't forget circumstantial effects too! Fed an NPC a great meal before a persuasion check? Grant advantage or similar!

    I think this system would be too much for my group, but im glad you had a vision for it and worked out the way it flows throughout a PCs journey. It sounds great for groups who want lots of detail and progression!

    Must always remember that to the rancher that cow hide is worth copper, to the tanner it is worth silver, to the saddle maker it is worth gold and to the knight it is worth platinum. So, simplicity is sorta key and for that ive run a very basic crafting system most of the time(unless there is a crafting centered character in the group). An Artisan's tool skill provides 10 gold worth of products per day times your proficiency bonus. This is doubled for "high value trades", the jeweler makes more than the carpenter. Doubled again for expertise in the tool. Player can choose the products based on value or take the gold.
    An oppulant life style costs 10gp a day. So a nobody artisan can earn 10 gold a day, but after expenses isnt living oppulantly. One who is a jeweler at level 1 can pull off a borderline oppulant lifestyle. An expert jeweler at level 1 is earning 40 gold a day and maybe paying an assistant or two out of that. PC tiered skills are upto 240gp a day at higher levels, which is an legendary income compared to the 10gp a day oppulance lifestyle level.
    Even the best smith is gonna take more than a few days to make a suit of full plate.

    Schematics are an interesting idea but do you want to know what's better?
    BOOKS
    Nobody uses them! They're just set dressing! Keep up a list of book names and ideas and what they do for the player. +2 to checks, advantage on specific circumstances in a particular skill check, grant proficiencies and feats-they are SO under used.
    Books in the medieval period, back when whole religious monasteries were dedicated to writing down history, copying pre-existing texts, and translating works from various foreign languages-all by hand or stamping press-books were very rarely read or written for only dumb fun and a small library might be a nobleman's prized possession because of how valuable books were!

    Pre watch ideas I have. Basic, fine and special materials.
    You can throw and collect basic materials at them like copper, they can look for and gather fine materials and must quest for special materials.

      While I really like Pathfinder 2e, most people don't base their choice of TTRPG entirely on whether one player in the party gets to pursue their dream of being a blacksmith. If you're running a game for a group of people who like 5e, and don't have the desire to learn a new system, it's easier to add a new element to 5e when someone wants to brew potions rather than get everyone to switch to a new system.

    tre reason your video exists is because DND is only porpoused for KILLING MONSTERS. Everything else is neatly overpowered just that the party can get over it without roleplay. So guys like you have to think about an actual system that does not fit into DND - and is better - to roleplay.

      @@TalesArcane Palpatine: goood-good. Your system is solid. I'm roleplaying in a 1-5 skill level RPG system. What you described is what I am generally used to.
      Apart from the alchemy stuff this skill system incorporates stuff like culture, politics, ancient language, dueling, ship navigation, chariot driving... and whole lot. Aaand politics is less about defined races but defined countrys, so that gets roleplayed (can get roleplayed) a lot. Same thing as you talked about: interactivity
