Hey guys, it's my first time watching, and I have subscribed. This is an interesting project you've got going on. My place is farther north of you, between Ninilchik and Clam Gulch on Sterling Hwy. I also have a channel that I'd appreciate it if you'd check it out as well: The Lone Moose. I have some videos of my place on there from last summer. I tend to write my comments as I watch videos... so I don't forget what I wanted to comment on or ask. My first question is about your piers, and remember this is the first of your videos I've watched, so this might be addressed in a prior video: It appears that the concrete blocks with the adjusting saddles are setting on the ground - then you poured a concrete box around them. Are you concerned with frost heave at all? I'm planning on having my piers drilled, at least 5' and maybe 6' down. I currently have a 40' shipping container on my place that I started remodeling into a tiny house, and I'll get back to that next summer when I make the big move up there (from south Texas). You've got some beautiful German Shepherds - aren't you concerned with them wandering off exploring and finding critters that they might not like playing with??? I have 6 rescues, plus my son's 2 micro-dogs, that I'll be bringing up later next summer. I have got get enough land cleared off for them to have a good play area. My major concern is that my place basically fronts on Sterling Hwy, plus a 75' wide gas pipeline right of way. Some of mine will be rather adventurous and find their way through the Pushke to the highway. And I already know that Ganga (my Border Collie/Pit mix) is going to be the first one to get porcupined!! lol... My buddy Jim, who referred me to your channel, said you were building outside Anchor Point. By chance are you in Wildwood Acres? I used to have 22.5 acres there, but ultimately decided that at my age I could not do well building everything from scratch. Are you planning on living in the cabin full time or part time? What are you going to do for water, electric and septic? I plan to have a well drilled on my place next summer and to put in a septic system next summer or the following spring. I have a 3KW solar system up there already (to be installed) with 1200 watts of solar panels. There is also regular electric available directly across Sterling Hwy, and they have pulled power across the highway to a lot 3 down from mine. I look forward to see how you progress, and next spring when I get up there, lunch will be on me if you're interested! I've just got too many family issues with a 94 year old father and 69 year old brother, both in nursing homes in WV, that I have to deal with. I was up there for 10 days at the end of July, and it was NICE!! but coming back to the oven of south Texas was not!!! Bill
The piers are adjustable so when there is settling they can be screwed up or down depending on need. We’re a ways off the road and the dogs aren’t outside unless we are too, they usually stay pretty close. Maybe get a fence put or an electric perimeter collar. If you’re within eyesight of the Sterling I wouldn’t take any chances, it’s too busy and people drive too fast. We are north of Anchor Point. Currently we are using a generator for power, outhouse and haul water from town. Eventually we’ll have a solar set up, put in a septic tank and I’m hoping this Spring (a previous episode) works out for a permanent water source. I’m a nurse, have done travel nursing all over the country, specializing in geriatrics. Homer has the absolute best long term care facility I’ve ever worked at. Might be something to check into for your loved ones if you’ve thought of transferring them up here with you. If you do Facebook, feel free to Friend us on there and I’d be happy to talk to you through Messenger. Lunch sounds great, I look forward to meeting you. Thank you for watching and Subscribing
@@ouralaskahomestead That's really cool! I was an Army-trained LPN, and worked geriatrics and oncology in the Army, and at a nursing home and rehab hospital after I got out. Now I work in the disability field, and haven't touched a patient since leaving the rehab hospital in 2002. I hope to retire next year, but don't know if that's going to happen, but since I work from home anyway, and I proved last year by working up there for 3 months at my place, I can continue to work if I chose. I'm getting ready to watch your video on your foundation. I like your concept, and think it would work pretty well with a shipping container. As for relocating them, that's would never happen. My brother has been seriously handicapped since birth (cerebral palsy) and he's been in his "home" for over 3 years now. He basically runs the place... lol!! He's thriving there and I'd never do anything to upset that apple cart. Dad would only go into a VA nursing home. He absolutely refuses to leave WV. He just went into the VA home in June of this year after a couple of mini-strokes (mom died last year at 92), and finally figured out he couldn't take care of himself at his place anymore, and definitely could not drive. Anyway, let me watch that video... there may be more questions...
